PREVIEW
Back at .500, Padres go for sweep of Brewers

The San Diego Padres seek to close out a short three-game homestand Wednesday afternoon by completing a sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers.

And suddenly, the Padres and Brewers are headed in opposite directions.

The Padres got back to .500 Tuesday night with a third straight win, while the Brewers -- still clinging to a half-game lead in the National League Central -- fell to 2-5 on an eight-game road trip that ends Wednesday afternoon.

Left-hander Matt Strahm (2-6, 4.66 ERA) will start for the Padres against Milwaukee right-hander Zach Davies (7-1, 2.60).

The greater task for the Brewers might be scoring.

After being shut out on four hits Monday night, Milwaukee ran its scoreless innings streak to 16 straight innings against the Padres before scoring once in the eighth inning on a walk, two ground outs and a wild pitch.

"We couldn't get anything going the past two nights," Brewers manager Craig Counsell told reporters Thursday night. "Four hits a game is not much to work with. The three double plays we grounded into tonight hurt us."

For the second straight game, the Padres will be facing a Brewers starter who enters the game with one loss. They dropped Brandon Woodruff to 8-2 Tuesday night.

Davies will be making his 15th start of the season Wednesday afternoon. While he did suffer the loss in his most recent outing, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk in five innings in a 5-3 loss at San Francisco last Friday, Davies before that became the first starter in Brewers history to win each of his first seven decisions in a season.

Milwaukee is 9-5 in Davies' starts this season.

Davies has allowed 28 runs (23 earned) on 78 hits and 22 walks with 50 strikeouts in 79 2/3 innings this year. He has a 1.26 WHIP and a .262 opponents' batting average.

Davies has a solid history against the Padres, going 3-0 with a 2.16 ERA in four career starts against San Diego (although he did not face the Padres in 2018). And all three of those wins have come at Petco Park, where Davies has a 1.93 ERA in three starts covering 18 2/3 innings.

Strahm will be seeking to rebound from a difficult last month.

Since picking up his second win and lowering his ERA to 3.06 on May 21, Strahm has lost three straight decisions while giving up 16 runs on 18 hits and seven walks with 19 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings for a 10.54 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP.

Strahm was also on the injured list from June 3-13 with a rib strain. In his return last Thursday, he gave up six runs on seven hits and four walks in 3 1/3 innings in a 9-6 loss at Colorado. He has also given up two home runs in each of his last four starts.

"I think we'll have a bounce-back outing from Matt (on) Wednesday," Padres manager Andy Green told the media. "We're confident his stuff is good enough to play in the rotation. His last couple have not been the sharpest."

Strahm did make one major contribution last Sunday. He drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Padres the winning run in their 14-13 win at Colorado.

Strahm's only career appearance against the Brewers came last season. He struck out the only hitter he faced and got the win.
