KEY GAME INFORMATION
PITTSBURGH: 2016: 78-83, third place
Manager: Clint Hurdle (seventh season)
Who's new? RHP Daniel Hudson, IF Phil Gosselin
Who's gone? IF Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, SP Jeff Locke, SP Ryan Vogelsong, RP Neftali Feliz, C Eric Fryer
Projected lineup: 2B Josh Harrison (.283, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB), 1B Josh Bell (.273, 3, 19), RF Andrew McCutchen (.256, 24, 79), CF Starling Marte (.311, 9, 46, 47 SB), LF Gregory Polanco (.258, 22, 86), 3B Jung-ho Kang (.255, 21, 62), C Francisco Cervelli (.264, 1, 33), SS Jordy Mercer (.256, 11, 59)
Rotation: RH Gerrit Cole (7-10, 3.88 ERA), RH Ivan Nova (12-8, 4.17 for Yankees and Pirates), RH Jameson Taillon (5-4, 3.38), RH Chad Kuhl (5-4, 4.20), RH Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.25 with Blue Jays and Pirates) or Steven Brault (0-3, 4.86) or Trevor Williams (1-1, 7.82) or Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.24)
Key relievers: LH Tony Watson (2-5, 3.06, 15/20 SV), RH Daniel Hudson (3-2, 5.22 with Diamondbacks), LH Felipe Rivero (1-6, 4.09 for Nationals and Pirates), RH Juan Nicasio (10-7, 4.50), LH Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 4.52 with Mets and Pirates), RH Jared Hughes (1-1, 3.03), LH Wade LeBlanc (4-0, 3.77 with Mariners and Pirates)
Hot spots: Rotation and closer. Right-hander Glasnow, 23, is a consensus top-25 prospect who made his major league debut last year. The Pirates would love to see him seize the fifth starter's job in camp, but right-hander Hutchison offers a more experienced option if Glasnow isn't ready. Watson became the closer after Mark Melancon was traded to Washington last summer, but his sinker/slider/changeup mix isn't typical ninth-inning stuff. Keep an eye on Rivero, a 25-year-old lefty acquired in the Melancon trade. His fastball actually gained velocity as last season wore on, eventually touching triple digits. Rivero might begin the season as the set-up man but his ascension to the ninth inning seems inevitable.
Outlook: The Pirates made some interesting tweaks after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. They made no major trades, signed only two major league free agents (pitchers Nova and Hudson) and revamped Hurdle's coaching staff. They also moved their outfielders around: McCutchen goes from center to right, Marte from left to center, and Polanco from right to left. McCutchen is coming off the worst season of his career. So is ace right-hander Cole. The path back to the playoffs begins with the two stars bouncing back. If the team's other homegrown talent ' Taillon, Glasnow, Bell and Polanco ' continue their evolution, Pittsburgh should return to the postseason in 2017.
SAN DIEGO: 2016: 68-94, fifth place
Manager: Andy Green (second season)
Who's new? RHP Jhoulys Chacin, RHP Trevor Cahill, RHP Jered Weaver
Who's gone? RHP Tyson Ross, RHP Brandon Morrow, IF/OF Alexi Amarista, OF Jon Jay, OF Oswaldo Arcia, IF/OF Adam Rosales
Projected lineup: LF Travis Jankowski (.245, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 30 SB), CF Manuel Margot (.243, 0, 3 in 10 games), 1B Wil Myers (.259, 28, 94, 28), 3B Yangervis Solarte (.286, 15, 71), RF Hunter Renfroe (.371, 4, 14 in 11 games), 2B Ryan Schmipf (.217, 20, 51), C Austin Hedges (.125, 0, 1 in eight games), SS Luis Sardinas (.287, 2, 13)
Rotation: RH Jered Weaver (12-12, 5.06 ERA with Angels), RH Jhoulys Chacin (6-8, 4.81 with Angels and Braves), LH Clayton Richard (3-3, 2.52), RH Trevor Cahill (4-4, 2.74 with Cubs), LH Christian Friedrich (5-12, 4.80) or RH Luis Perdomo (9-10, 5.71)
Key relievers: RH Brandon Maurer (0-5, 4.52, 13/19 SV), RH Carter Capps (did not pitch - Tommy John surgery), LH Ryan Buchter (3-0, 2.86), LH Brad Hand (4-4, 2.92), RH Kevin Quackenbush (7-7, 3.92), LH Keith Hessler (1-0, 3.38 with Diamondbacks and Padres), RH Jarred Cosart (0-3, 6.03 with Marlins and Padres)
Hot spots: Bullpen. San Diego's version of a position battle is Green fighting the temptation to bench a young player in the middle of a long slump. Since the Padres are playing for next year anyway, watching bullpen roles shake out might be someone's version of fun. Maurer, the incumbent closer, blew six of 19 save opportunities last year. Hand and Buchter are a pair of workhorse lefties who wouldn't look out of place on a contending team. The wild card is Capps, who is healthy after missing all of 2016 following Tommy John surgery. A year before, he struck out 58 batters in 31 innings with the Marlins.
Outlook: Look up 'rebuilding team' in the dictionary. With only eight active players on the books for more than $1 million ' excluding the retained salaries of Matt Kemp, Melvin Upton Jr. and several other former Padres ' San Diego will field MLB's lowest payroll. Theirs is the youngest roster in baseball too, with perhaps only two players who have turned 30 by Opening Day. Their best prospects are college-age kids in the low minors. So what's to like? Prospect watchers have been awaiting the arrival of Margot and Renfroe for years. The backup catcher, Christian Bethancourt, might pitch. Capps has an unusual delivery. The Padres also ran the bases aggressively under Green, and stolen bases are fun. How's that for a marketing slogan?
PREVIEW
Pirates, Padres meet for first time in 2017

SAN DIEGO -- On Friday night at Petco Park, the San Diego Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates will meet for the first time in 2017.

They will soon feel like dance partners.

The Pirates and Padres will square off six times in 10 days in their annual home-and-home set.

Not only will the Pirates be new to the Padres, so will San Diego's starting pitcher.

Veteran left-hander Travis Wood will make his Padres debut Friday. Wood came to the Padres on Monday as part of the six-player trade that sent starter Trevor Cahill and relievers Brandon Maurer and Ryan Buchter to Kansas City.

Wood, 30, is no stranger to Petco Park.

"I've always liked pitching here," said Wood, who came to the Padres along with left-handed pitcher Matt Strahm (who is sidelined for the remainder of the season after patellar tendon surgery) and 18-year-old second base prospect Esteury Ruiz.

In six previous appearances at Petco Park (four starts), Wood is 2-1 with a 2.54 ERA. Friday night will be Wood's first start at Petco Park since May 24, 2014, when he was a member of the Chicago Cubs.

"I'm glad to get a chance to start here," Wood said, "but I'm willing to help wherever they feel they need me. I haven't had a chance to sit down very long with the coaches and catchers to discuss what I do and what we're going to do. I guess we'll sit down at length (Friday)."

Wood had a 1-3 record with the Royals, compiling a 6.91 ERA in 28 appearances (three starts). His final two outings were both starts. He gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings Sunday against the Chicago White Sox. Over his final two outings with the Royals, Wood gave up 10 runs in nine innings.

Wood will be opposed by 24-year-old Pirates right-hander Chad Kuhl, who is 3-7 with a 4.92 ERA in 21 starts this season. Kuhl is 2-3 with a 3.96 ERA in 10 road starts.

Kuhl faced the Padres once last season and came out with the win after surrendering two runs in six innings.

Kuhl pitched a career-best seven innings on July 6 at Philadelphia.

"It was awesome going seven innings," Kuhl said. "That was a step I wanted to reach. Everything like that gets you closer to the ultimate goal."

In his Saturday start at Colorado, he triggered a benches-clearing face-off by throwing a 96 mph fastball inside on Carlos Gonzalez. Kuhl would up throwing six innings of four-run ball.

The Pirates won seven of their first eight games coming out of the All-Star break to move from fourth to second in the National League Central. However, they lost their last two games in San Francisco on Tuesday and Wednesday to slip back into a tie for third, 4 1/2 games behind the surging Cubs.

Both the Padres and Pirates have improved during the season. San Diego is 30-27 since starting 15-30. Pittsburgh (50-52) is 24-17 over the past 41 games.

"The Pirates have been one of the hottest clubs in the major leagues coming out of the break," San Diego manager Andy Green said.
