Manager: Terry Collins (seventh season)
Who's new? No one of note
Who's gone? 1B James Loney, IF/OF Kelly Johnson, OF Alejandro De Aza, RHP Bartolo Colon, LHP Jonathon Niese
Projected lineup: CF Curtis Granderson (.237, 30 HR, 59 RBI), 3B David Wright (.226, 7, 14 in 37 games), LF Yoenis Cespedes (.280, 31, 86), RF Jay Bruce (.250, 33, 99 with Reds and Mets), 2B Neil Walker (.282, 23, 55), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (.280, 23, 62), 1B Lucas Duda (.229, 7, 23 in 47 games), C Travis d'Arnaud (.247, 4, 15)
Rotation: RH Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60 ERA), RH Jacob deGrom (7-8, 3.04), RH Matt Harvey (4-10, 4.86), LH Steven Matz (9-8, 3.40), RH Zack Wheeler or RH Robert Gsellman (4-2, 2.42) or RH Seth Lugo (5-2, 2.67)
Key relievers: RH Jeurys Familia (3-4, 2.55, 51/56 SV), RH Addison Reed (4-2, 1.97), RH Hansel Robles (6-4, 3.48), LH Jerry Blevins (4-2, 2.79), RH Fernando Salas (3-7, 3.91)
Hot spots: First base and third base. Duda missed 115 games last season because of a stress fracture in his lower back. When healthy, the veteran first baseman slugged a career-low .714. Former first-round draft pick Dominic Smith, 21, could be in position to battle for the starting spot soon. He'll likely begin the season at Triple-A. Franchise third baseman Wright doesn't have a hot prospect pushing him out the door, but how much game does he have left? The perennial All-Star only began throwing a baseball in February after an eight-month recovery from neck surgery. Wright had a degenerative back and has only played 75 games the last two years. Getting a full season from him at age 34 would be a shock.
Outlook: The Mets' championship window opened with a surprise World Series run in 2015, and their front office seems convinced it's still open. The club invested four years and $110 million to keep Yoenis Cespedes in the outfield. The Mets also exercised club options on Jay Bruce and Jose Reyes, and brought Neil Walker back on a qualifying offer. The result? Almost everyone returns from a club that lost a wild-card game to the Giants last October. The franchise is oozing young pitching ' Syndergaard might be the best right-hander on the planet ' but another World Series appearance might be too much to expect from a team that ranked 25th in runs per game last season. | | SAN DIEGO: 2016: 68-94, fifth place
Manager: Andy Green (second season)
Who's new? RHP Jhoulys Chacin, RHP Trevor Cahill, RHP Jered Weaver
Who's gone? RHP Tyson Ross, RHP Brandon Morrow, IF/OF Alexi Amarista, OF Jon Jay, OF Oswaldo Arcia, IF/OF Adam Rosales
Projected lineup: LF Travis Jankowski (.245, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 30 SB), CF Manuel Margot (.243, 0, 3 in 10 games), 1B Wil Myers (.259, 28, 94, 28), 3B Yangervis Solarte (.286, 15, 71), RF Hunter Renfroe (.371, 4, 14 in 11 games), 2B Ryan Schmipf (.217, 20, 51), C Austin Hedges (.125, 0, 1 in eight games), SS Luis Sardinas (.287, 2, 13)
Rotation: RH Jered Weaver (12-12, 5.06 ERA with Angels), RH Jhoulys Chacin (6-8, 4.81 with Angels and Braves), LH Clayton Richard (3-3, 2.52), RH Trevor Cahill (4-4, 2.74 with Cubs), LH Christian Friedrich (5-12, 4.80) or RH Luis Perdomo (9-10, 5.71)
Key relievers: RH Brandon Maurer (0-5, 4.52, 13/19 SV), RH Carter Capps (did not pitch - Tommy John surgery), LH Ryan Buchter (3-0, 2.86), LH Brad Hand (4-4, 2.92), RH Kevin Quackenbush (7-7, 3.92), LH Keith Hessler (1-0, 3.38 with Diamondbacks and Padres), RH Jarred Cosart (0-3, 6.03 with Marlins and Padres)
Hot spots: Bullpen. San Diego's version of a position battle is Green fighting the temptation to bench a young player in the middle of a long slump. Since the Padres are playing for next year anyway, watching bullpen roles shake out might be someone's version of fun. Maurer, the incumbent closer, blew six of 19 save opportunities last year. Hand and Buchter are a pair of workhorse lefties who wouldn't look out of place on a contending team. The wild card is Capps, who is healthy after missing all of 2016 following Tommy John surgery. A year before, he struck out 58 batters in 31 innings with the Marlins.
Outlook: Look up 'rebuilding team' in the dictionary. With only eight active players on the books for more than $1 million ' excluding the retained salaries of Matt Kemp, Melvin Upton Jr. and several other former Padres ' San Diego will field MLB's lowest payroll. Theirs is the youngest roster in baseball too, with perhaps only two players who have turned 30 by Opening Day. Their best prospects are college-age kids in the low minors. So what's to like? Prospect watchers have been awaiting the arrival of Margot and Renfroe for years. The backup catcher, Christian Bethancourt, might pitch. Capps has an unusual delivery. The Padres also ran the bases aggressively under Green, and stolen bases are fun. How's that for a marketing slogan? |
| | Mets look to pick on rebuilding Padres
SAN DIEGO -- The present shows the New York Mets taking on the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. However, the Padres take the Petco Park field thinking more about the future. That was clear Monday when they made a multiplayer trade with the Kansas City Royals. "No one is blindsided by this," Padres manager Andy Green said. "We are excited about the prospects." But maybe the prospects are just as good for the Mets to take advantage of the short-handed Padres. After San Diego lost two critical late-inning arms, Brandon Maurer and Ryan Buchter, the Mets will be facing a Padres bullpen filled with relievers not sure of their roles. As Green continues to mix and match while figuring out which pitcher to choose when, there could be some speed bumps along the way. The Mets also won't have to face Trevor Cahill on Wednesday night. Cahill, who had been among the Padres' most effective pitchers, is headed to Kansas City with the Padres picking through names in the farm system for a starter that night. So while Padres hope the swap pays dividends down the road, the Mets' road trip to San Diego just might have gotten a little more agreeable. San Diego sends Jhoulys Chacin (9-7, 4.26 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday while the Mets counter with Seth Lugo (4-2, 4.05) in a matchup of right-handers. Chacin has had a rough go against the Mets in his career, compiling a 1-5 record with a 6.50 ERA. However, in his four starts overall this month, he is 3-0 with a 2.31 ERA. Lugo has seen the Padres only once, throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings and striking out two in a relief appearance on Aug. 12, 2016. Lugo was sensational his last time out, even if he didn't have a decision to show for it. He threw 6 2/3 innings Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals, not allowing a hit until there were two outs in the fifth. He wound up permitting one run on four hits. "I felt like I had my legs under me so I could make the adjustment," he said after the game. "We need all the wins we can get right now. If we're going to make a good run for (the playoffs) and put up a good fight, that kind of stuff has to happen." When the stuff hit the fan, Lugo often hit the showers. However, he has shown more mettle lately, and the results was consecutive starts in which he went 6 2/3 innings. "Each start I try to get better, and I feel like that's happening," he said. "(Against the Rockies on July 15), I ran out of gas in the sixth and seventh, and I felt really tired out there. (Against the Cardinals), I felt great in those last couple innings, and I felt like I still had more in the tank." Some are calling the Padres "Team Tank" as they strip away the few major league assets they possessed. The watered-day version of their squad will try to keep pace with the Mets on Tuesday. New York has won five of its past six games, including the series opener 5-3 on Monday. "That's a good club, and they are playing good baseball," Green said of the Mets. "They hit the ball well and are pitching it well. They are enjoying a run of success right now, and I'm sure they would like to continue it." |
