KEY GAME INFORMATION
COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''
SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

*Rockies-Padres Preview* ========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Colorado (65-92) at San Diego (75-81), 10:10 p.m. EDT

Jorge De La Rosa and the Colorado Rockies have been tough to beat at Coors Field, but they've struggled to win on the road.

That doesn't bode well heading into a matchup with the majors' best home team since the All-Star break.

As De La Rosa looks to end his career-worst road losing streak, the Rockies will try to avoid their longest skid away from home in two years Tuesday night against the streaking San Diego Padres.

Colorado (65-92) has averaged 7.9 runs and hit .351 with 27 home runs while winning 13 of 15 at Coors - including six in a row - but it's been a much different story away from home.

The Rockies have dropped eight straight and 35 of 40 on the road following Monday's 1-0 series-opening loss. They've totaled 17 runs and hit .184 with six homers in their last 13 road contests.

Justin Morneau had two hits Monday to move two percentage points ahead of Pittsburgh's Josh Harrison (.318) in the race for the NL batting title. He's 10 for 24 in his last six games and is hitting .429 versus San Diego this season.

"Don't get me wrong, if it works out that way it'll be nice," Morneau said about winning the batting title. "But for now it's kind of hard when you're watching the Dodgers play the Giants for the division (title). That's really where you want to be and in the end that's what it comes down to."

Colorado could have a difficult time avoiding its longest road slide since September 2012 with De La Rosa on the hill.

De La Rosa (14-11, 4.14 ERA) has gone 7-0 with a 2.72 ERA in his last eight home starts, but he's 0-5 with a 5.16 mark in his last five away from Coors and hasn't won a road outing since June 29.

He pitched well at home Wednesday, allowing two hits over six shutout innings in a 16-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

De La Rosa, however, is 3-1 with a 2.10 ERA in his last five starts in San Diego, and he's posted a 2.41 ERA in three starts overall against the Padres in 2014.

San Diego seeks a season-high sixth straight victory after Rene Rivera went 2 for 4 Monday while driving in the only run with a first-inning RBI double. The catcher is 6 for 12 with three doubles and five RBIs over his last three games.

The Padres (75-81) have won seven of eight on the homestand with their rotation posting a 2.03 ERA. At 23-7, San Diego has baseball's best home winning percentage since the All-Star break.

Robbie Erlin (4-4, 4.53) contributed to the team's home success Thursday, allowing one run over six innings in a 7-3 victory over Philadelphia in his first start in four months due to elbow soreness.

"His season was interrupted by the elbow, which was a bummer because I think he was off to a good start," manager Bud Black said. "This was more like what we saw in April and May."

The left-hander, however, has gone 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA in three outings - two starts - versus Colorado this season.

Wilin Rosario (3 for 3), DJ LeMahieu (3 for 5) and Charlie Blackmon (2 for 4) have fared well when facing Erlin, though 2013 NL batting champ Michael Cuddyer is 4 for 26 in his last eight versus San Diego.
