| | | SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''
| | SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

*Giants-Padres Preview* =======================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
San Francisco (84-69) at San Diego (72-81), 8:40 p.m. EDT
After being stymied by one of San Diego's talented young pitchers, the San Francisco Giants don't expect to have an easy time with Padres veteran Andrew Cashner.
The visiting Giants will try to end Cashner's recent run of success Saturday.
San Francisco (84-68) managed two of its three hits off rookie Odrisamer Despaigne during a 5-0 loss Friday that left the club 3 1/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and one ahead of Pittsburgh for the wild-card lead.
"We had a tough time getting anything going," said manager Bruce Bochy, whose team has totaled 10 runs and been shut out twice while going 2-4 since averaging 6.3 during a four-game winning streak.
San Francisco now gets its first 2014 look at Cashner (4-7, 2.20 ERA), who is 2-1 with a 1.85 ERA in five starts since missing two months with shoulder soreness.
The right-hander needed 92 pitches to shut out Philadelphia on Monday, striking out seven and allowing two hits in a 1-0 victory. Cashner didn't yield his first hit until the fifth when Domonic Brown reached on a bunt single.
"I felt I had enough to carry (a no-hitter) all the way through," Cashner told MLB's official website.
Though Cashner is 3-3 in 10 home starts, he's posted a 1.34 ERA in those games. Of the 17 runs the Padres have scored with Cashner on the mound at Petco Park, seven have come over his last seven outings.
All three of Cashner's career starts versus San Francisco came last season when he went 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA against the division foe. He gave up a run in six innings of a 2-1 victory in his only home start against the Giants.
Buster Posey is 5 for 12 with two home runs against Cashner, but is 0 for 6 in the two games since batting .423 in his previous seven.
Angel Pagan is 2 for 5 versus Cashner, but could miss this contest after he left Friday with a back issue. He missed the entire three-game set with Arizona this week because of the same ailment.
It's also uncertain if Michael Morse will play after he re-aggravated an oblique injury Friday in his return from missing the previous 15 games with the same issue.
After allowing a home run and striking out nine during a complete-game 5-1 victory over Arizona on Sept. 9, Yusmeiro Petit (5-4, 3.64) gave up four runs and struck out eight over seven innings of a 4-2 loss to the Dodgers on Sunday.
Though the right-hander is 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA at home since replacing Tim Lincecum in the rotation, he's 0-1 with a 9.31 ERA in four overall road starts this season. He's allowed 11 runs and 14 hits in nine innings while not factoring in the decision over his last two starts away from home.
Petit is 3-3 with a 5.18 ERA in 10 starts this season, and his first came at home against the Padres when he allowed three hits in six innings of a 6-0 victory April 29. He's since pitched two innings of scoreless relief versus San Diego.
Seth Smith is 2 for 3 with a home run versus Petit and had an RBI double Friday as San Diego (72-81) improved to 4-1 on its final 10-game homestand.
Teammate Alexi Amarista is batting .400 with 10 RBIs in eight games but is 1 for 6 against Petit.
