KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHILADELPHIA: PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard and his teammates have heard critics say the window has closed for the Philadelphia Phillies.
They just don't believe it.
After a dominant run that included five straight NL East titles, two pennants and the 2008 World Series championship, the Phillies have missed the postseason two consecutive years. They have an aging core of players who've been declining.
Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Ruiz are the remaining regulars from the group that led Philadelphia to its best era of baseball from 2007-11 under former manager Charlie Manuel.
They're determined to make another run.
''We've had a bad couple years and had injuries and all that stuff, but I don't think it's over,'' Howard said. ''People are entitled to their opinions and that's fine, but it's up to us to go out there and show them otherwise and go out and play our game and do what we do.''
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. refused to start the rebuilding process after the Phillies' first losing season since 2002. Instead, he re-signed Utley and Ruiz and added veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd and right-hander A.J. Burnett in free agency.
If the older players live up to their hefty contracts and younger guys like 2013 All-Star Domonic Brown, Cody Asche and Ben Revere continue to develop, the Phillies should be in contention.
''I think we're positive. We're expecting to win and plan on doing everything we can to ensure that,'' ace lefty Cliff Lee said.
SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

*Phillies-Padres Preview* =========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Philadelphia (69-82) at San Diego (70-80), 10:10 p.m. EDT

As a youngster growing up in San Diego, Cole Hamels rose to stardom on the diamond before becoming the 17th overall draft pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2002.

The left-hander's recent visits to his hometown have just as positive.

Hamels looks to extend an outstanding stretch and continue his dominance of the Padres on Wednesday night while trying to help the Phillies snap a three-game losing streak.

A three-time All-Star and MVP of the 2008 World Series, Hamels (8-7, 2.51 ERA) has strung together 20 consecutive starts without allowing more than three runs.

He's gone 7-4 with a 1.89 ERA over that span after he allowed one run and scattered nine hits over seven innings in Friday's 3-1, 10-inning home win over Miami. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw (1.26) and Seattle's Felix Hernandez (1.87) have posted better ERAs since June 1.

Hamels, who attended Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego, has been nearly that effective against the Padres (70-80). He's 8-2 with a 2.21 ERA in 15 career starts and is 4-1 with a 1.85 mark in his seven at San Diego.

The 30-year-old hasn't lost to the Padres since July 2010, going 5-0 with a 1.24 ERA in his last seven meetings. In his only start against them this season, he gave up five hits and fanned 11 over eight innings in a 3-0 home win June 11.

Following Tuesday's 5-4 loss at Petco Park, Hamels will try to keep Philadelphia from its longest skid since dropping four straight from July 20-23. Domonic Brown and Freddy Galvis hit home runs Tuesday, but the Phillies managed only five hits.

Alexi Amarista homered off A.J. Burnett in the sixth following a walk to Jake Goebbert to put the Padres ahead 4-3. Amarista doubled in the second and singled in the fourth, falling a triple short of the cycle when he grounded out in the eighth.

"I'm not going to make excuses," Burnett said. "I messed up. I walked a guy, and the curveball (to Amarista) wasn't down enough."

The Padres hope to keep playing well at home, where they've won 18 of 23 while their starters have posted a 2.40 ERA.

Rymer Liriano also had three hits Tuesday, while Amarista has gone 8 for 19 with five RBIs in his last five games.

Eric Stults (7-16, 4.49) will try to avoid matching Philadelphia's A.J. Burnett - Tuesday's losing pitcher - for the most losses in the majors. The left-hander has pitched well of late, going 4-3 with a 2.81 ERA in his last eight starts.

Stults snapped a three-start losing streak Friday when he gave up five runs, two earned, over six innings in a 6-5 victory at Arizona. It was only the third time in 29 starts that the Padres provided him with more than three runs.

"This year has just been one of those years," said Stults, whose 3.07 run-support average ranks among baseball's worst. "I've played on a lot of teams where there always seems to be one guy that doesn't get a lot of run support."

The 34-year-old has gone 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA in three career starts versus Philadelphia (69-82). He allowed four runs and eight hits over five innings in a 7-3 road loss June 12 in his only meeting this season.

Ben Revere went 2 for 2 with a double off Stults in that contest, but he's hitting just .171 in his last 11 games overall.

Galvis is 2 for 2 with a home run all-time in the matchup, while Chase Utley is 3 for 8 with a double and Marlon Byrd is 4 for 11 with two doubles.
