KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHILADELPHIA: PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard and his teammates have heard critics say the window has closed for the Philadelphia Phillies.
They just don't believe it.
After a dominant run that included five straight NL East titles, two pennants and the 2008 World Series championship, the Phillies have missed the postseason two consecutive years. They have an aging core of players who've been declining.
Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Ruiz are the remaining regulars from the group that led Philadelphia to its best era of baseball from 2007-11 under former manager Charlie Manuel.
They're determined to make another run.
''We've had a bad couple years and had injuries and all that stuff, but I don't think it's over,'' Howard said. ''People are entitled to their opinions and that's fine, but it's up to us to go out there and show them otherwise and go out and play our game and do what we do.''
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. refused to start the rebuilding process after the Phillies' first losing season since 2002. Instead, he re-signed Utley and Ruiz and added veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd and right-hander A.J. Burnett in free agency.
If the older players live up to their hefty contracts and younger guys like 2013 All-Star Domonic Brown, Cody Asche and Ben Revere continue to develop, the Phillies should be in contention.
''I think we're positive. We're expecting to win and plan on doing everything we can to ensure that,'' ace lefty Cliff Lee said.
SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

*Phillies-Padres Preview* =========================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Philadelphia (69-79) at San Diego (68-79), 10:10 p.m. EDT

A 10-game trip that begins on the other side of the country might be the best thing for Philadelphia and Jonathan Papelbon.

The closer will try to begin putting behind an unseemly incident in his team's latest game and the Phillies will seek a sixth consecutive win over the San Diego Padres on Monday night.

Philadelphia looked like it would complete a three-game sweep of Miami on Sunday before Papelbon gave up four runs in the ninth in a 5-4 loss. After his first blown save in 15 attempts, he grabbed at his crotch while walking toward the dugout and appeared to direct the gesture toward booing Phillies fans.

Crew chief Joe West tossed him, and the two got into a physical argument. Following the game, Papelbon stated he was making a "adjustment" to his equipment and said the boos didn't affect him.

"When I'm out there and in the moment, the fans are irrelevant to me. I don't see them. I don't hear them," he said. "To me, this is pretty stupid, to be totally honest with you."

Having pitched in all three games against the Marlins, Papelbon could get at least one night off to rest and cool down from any lingering effects from Sunday's game.

The Phillies (69-80) will try to move past the loss with their sixth win in the last nine road games, and a visit to the Padres (68-80) could help. Philadelphia has won 28 of 36 in the series and 19 of 23 in San Diego.

The Padres enter this series having dropped nine of 11, including its two most recent home games Sept. 3-4. The Padres had won 21 of 27 at Petco Park before those defeats.

San Diego will try to get back to winning there while adding to Jerome Williams' recent woes. The Phillies right-hander has allowed nine runs over 10 innings in his last two starts and took his first loss in six games with Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Williams (3-1, 3.44 ERA) gave up four runs in five innings in a 6-3 defeat to Pittsburgh but struck out a season-high eight and had a two-run single, his only hit in nine at-bats this season.

He'll make his first start against San Diego since April 19, 2005, with San Francisco. He's 3-2 with a 2.63 ERA in six career matchups.

Andrew Cashner (3-7, 2.40) will try to build on his first win in 12 starts, a 6-3 road victory against the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. The right-hander gave up two runs in seven innings and is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his last five major league outings, the last four coming after a return from soreness in his throwing shoulder.

He also hit a two-run double for his first RBIs this season.

"Yeah, it's been a monkey on my back," Cashner told MLB's official website. "I don't pay a lot of attention to it, but it's finally nice to get a win and help the team out."

Cashner gave San Diego its most recent win over Philadelphia in his only start against the Phillies on Sept. 10, 2013. He allowed two runs, four hits and one walk in 7 2-3 innings while striking out seven in an 8-2 road victory.
