| |  | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''
| | SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

Although he's pitching relatively well, Ian Kennedy hasn't earned a win during the San Diego Padres' recent hot stretch.
He'll try to change that while leading his club to a season high-tying fifth consecutive victory and a season-best sixth in a row at home in Wednesday's finale against the Colorado Rockies.
San Diego's 4-1 win over Colorado on Tuesday was its 10th in 13 games, and 14th in 18 home contests.
Kennedy (8-10, 3.51 ERA) hasn't earned a win in his last two starts despite giving up three runs over 11 innings. He yielded two runs in six innings Friday in Pittsburgh but suffered a 2-1 defeat. It was his second game since skipping a start due to mild soreness in his left oblique.
"It wasn't my best stuff, but you try to battle through it \2026 You try to limit the damage and grind through it," Kennedy told MLB's official website. "I'm still not 100 percent. But it's slowly getting better."
Kennedy is 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA in his last seven starts and 1-1 with a 1.89 ERA in last three starts against Colorado. He yielded a solo homer, three singles and a pair of walks while striking out nine in seven innings in a 6-1 win in Denver on July 7.
Kennedy will face a Rockies team that's lost 20 of 26, and 22 of 25 on the road. Colorado (46-73) had claimed six of this season's first 10 meetings with San Diego before its back-to-back losses in this visit to Petco Park.
"It's frustrating because we have just not put anything together," said Corey Dickerson, whose ninth-inning homer was his third in three games.
The Padres (56-62) swept a three-game set from the Rockies on Sept. 6-8 in San Diego and have won seven of the last nine meetings there. They are seeking their first five-game overall win streak since June 29-July 4 and first six-game home win streak since an eight-gamer June 10-21, 2013.
Even with a short-handed lineup, the Padres might have a good chance at accomplishing those goals when they face a struggling Tyler Matzek (2-7, 5.32).
The rookie left-hander, 1-4 with a 6.09 ERA in his last six starts, gave up three runs, four hits and a season-high five walks over five innings in Friday's 5-3 loss in Arizona. The Rockies are 2-9 in his starts.
Matzek was charged with five runs, eight hits and four walks while pitching opposite Kennedy last month, his only other matchup with San Diego.
Everth Cabrera and Yonder Alonso did not play in that game and both might be missing for this one as well. Cabrera was placed on the disabled list Tuesday with a strained left hamstring, and Alonso was forced to leave Tuesday's game with a strained right forearm.
Among the Rockies' notable absences are Troy Tulowitzki (hip), Carlos Gonzalez (knee) and Michael Cuddyer (shoulder). Tulowitzki's replacement at shortstop, Josh Rutledge, is 5 for 13 (.385) with one home run in his career against Kennedy, but 1 for 23 in his last seven games.
