| | | ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - Last October, the St. Louis Cardinals were sufficiently flush with arms that they carried rookie Shelby Miller and deposed closer Edward Mujica in ceremonial roles and made it to Game 6 of the World Series against Boston.
After leading major league rookies with 15 wins, Miller was limited to one postseason inning due to concerns about a heavy workload. Mujica was used only in mop-up duty after mid-September.
The National League champions are perhaps even deeper, across the board, entering opening day March 31 at Cincinnati. The team that tied for the major league high with 97 wins has a surplus of viable candidates.
''I think we have the potential to be great,'' said ace Adam Wainwright, who won 19 games and finished second in NL Cy Young balloting. ''We just have to go out there, not listen to the hype, and perform.''
The 32-year-old Wainwright qualifies as the grizzled leader of a rotation that could include three members coming off big rookie debuts. Michael Wacha was a postseason sensation and the NLCS MVP, Miller went wire-to-wire as the fifth starter and Carlos Martinez, who's had an impressive spring, moved into the setup role when fellow rookie Trevor Rosenthal took over as closer.
Wacha and Martinez are 22, Miller and Rosenthal just 23.
There's also 15-game winner Lance Lynn, who struck out 10 in four innings of his last spring training start, and lefty Jaime Garcia could fit into the mix sometime in April coming off shoulder surgery. And don't forget Joe Kelly, another rookie who won 10 games and was the rotation's strongest starter much of the second half.
And one of the National League's best lineups, too.
Much is expected from a loyal fan base that extends several states, and that's OK.
''Our expectations,'' Lynn said, ''are higher than theirs.''
| | SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

*Cardinals-Padres Preview* ==========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer
St. Louis (56-50) at San Diego (48-59), 3:40 p.m. EDT
Every once in awhile, baseball's worst offense gets a jolt that produces plenty of runs.
The San Diego Padres have shown consistently that their pitching can shut down the opposition, though.
Rookie Odrisamer Despaigne takes the mound Thursday as the Padres go for a three-game home sweep of the slumping St. Louis Cardinals.
San Diego (48-59) has scored by far the fewest runs in the majors, but it busted out Wednesday and tied its season high with 16 hits in a 12-1 rout of St. Louis.
The Padres set their season best with 13 runs in a win over the Cubs last Thursday and have scored in double digits four times this season. Jedd Gyorko and Will Venable each homered and drove in four runs Wednesday, while rookie Yangervis Solarte had four hits.
Solarte is hitting .364 with two homers and eight RBIs in eight games since being acquired in the trade that sent Chase Headley to the New York Yankees.
"We haven't had it enough, but it's great to see," manager Bud Black said of the offensive outburst. "It starts with starting pitching, and Jesse (Hahn) pitched a great game."
Though San Diego's offense has struggled again this season, its pitching staff ranks third in the majors with a 3.14 ERA. The Padres' starters have a 2.88 ERA over their last seven after Hahn pitched seven strong innings Wednesday.
Despaigne (2-2, 1.66 ERA) has been solid in six starts since making his major league debut June 23, including being four outs away from a no-hitter in the Padres' 2-1 win over the New York Mets on July 20.
He wasn't nearly as good Saturday while giving up five runs - two earned - and walking five in 3 2-3 innings of a 5-3 loss at Atlanta. He had allowed five runs total prior to that start.
"It's one game," Black said. "He's made how many major league starts? Six is a small sample size. Five pretty good ones and one where he didn't throw strikes. That's why we keep playing."
The right-hander will get his first look at the Cardinals (56-50), who are 2 1/2 games back of NL Central-leading Milwaukee after losing for the sixth time in eight games.
St. Louis has the second-worst offense in the majors behind the Padres. It scored just one run for the third straight contest, plating Matt Adams in the seven inning after San Diego failed to turn a double Peter Bourjos' grounder.
"It was probably our ugliest loss of the year. That's the best way to describe it," manager Mike Matheny said.
After allowing their most runs in more than two months, the Cardinals will send Shelby Miller to the mound.
Miller (7-8, 4.20) allowed two runs and three hits in 5 2-3 innings of the Cardinals' 6-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, marking the fifth straight start he's failed to complete six innings. He's 0-2 with a 6.85 ERA in that stretch.
The right-hander made a relief appearance July 20, though Matheny said that move simply was to give Miller added rest following the All-Star break.
Miller thought he pitched well in his return to the rotation, retiring 16 of the first 18 batters he faced.
"When you get in a groove and you're feeling pretty good, in a rhythm, you just keep going," he said.
Miller was erratic in his only start against the Padres, though, throwing 107 pitches over 5 2-3 innings while giving up three runs and walking three in a 4-2 road loss May 20, 2013.
