KEY GAME INFORMATION
ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - Last October, the St. Louis Cardinals were sufficiently flush with arms that they carried rookie Shelby Miller and deposed closer Edward Mujica in ceremonial roles and made it to Game 6 of the World Series against Boston.
After leading major league rookies with 15 wins, Miller was limited to one postseason inning due to concerns about a heavy workload. Mujica was used only in mop-up duty after mid-September.
The National League champions are perhaps even deeper, across the board, entering opening day March 31 at Cincinnati. The team that tied for the major league high with 97 wins has a surplus of viable candidates.
''I think we have the potential to be great,'' said ace Adam Wainwright, who won 19 games and finished second in NL Cy Young balloting. ''We just have to go out there, not listen to the hype, and perform.''
The 32-year-old Wainwright qualifies as the grizzled leader of a rotation that could include three members coming off big rookie debuts. Michael Wacha was a postseason sensation and the NLCS MVP, Miller went wire-to-wire as the fifth starter and Carlos Martinez, who's had an impressive spring, moved into the setup role when fellow rookie Trevor Rosenthal took over as closer.
Wacha and Martinez are 22, Miller and Rosenthal just 23.
There's also 15-game winner Lance Lynn, who struck out 10 in four innings of his last spring training start, and lefty Jaime Garcia could fit into the mix sometime in April coming off shoulder surgery. And don't forget Joe Kelly, another rookie who won 10 games and was the rotation's strongest starter much of the second half.
And one of the National League's best lineups, too.
Much is expected from a loyal fan base that extends several states, and that's OK.
''Our expectations,'' Lynn said, ''are higher than theirs.''
SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

*Cardinals-Padres Preview* ==========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

St. Louis (56-48) at San Diego (46-59), 10:10 p.m. EDT

Jesse Hahn has pitched more like an ace than a rookie since stumbling in his first outing last month, and continuing that trend would be a pretty nice way to spend his 25th birthday.

The right-hander looks for his seventh win in eight starts while leading the Padres to their fourth straight home victory Wednesday night against the offensively challenged St. Louis Cardinals.

Hahn (6-2, 2.12 ERA) wasn't believed to be the main piece of a deal that brought Alex Torres to San Diego and sent Logan Forsythe, Brad Boxberger, Matt Andriese, and Maxx Tissenbaum to Tampa Bay in January.

The 2010 sixth-round pick, however, has been one of the Padres' top starters since his outstanding run began in mid-June.

Hahn had been demoted to Triple-A after allowing four runs over 3 2-3 innings in a loss to Pittsburgh in his major league debut June 3, but he's gone 6-1 with a 1.47 ERA in seven starts since re-joining the rotation on June 14.

Hahn was back in the minors right before the All-Star break in an effort to limit his workload. He then picked up where he left off in his first outing in two weeks Friday, allowing one run and three hits over six innings in a 5-2 win at Atlanta.

"He's got some confidence in his game, which we came to know in spring training," manager Bud Black said. "I like the fact again he's got a pretty even keel about his personality during the course of the game."

Now he'll try to help the Padres (47-59) take the first two in this three-game set on his birthday after Tuesday's 3-1 win. All-Star Tyson Ross held St. Louis to one run and four hits in six innings as San Diego snapped a three-game losing streak.

Jedd Gyorko went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Yangervis Solarte homered in his home debut after coming over last Tuesday in the deal that sent Chase Headley to the New York Yankees.

The Cardinals (56-49) have put up one run in each of their last two games, and their 3.68-run average is the worst in the majors other than the Padres (3.08).

"We are having trouble scoring runs and facing good pitching," manager Mike Matheny said.

Matt Carpenter contributed the team's only extra-base hit with a double, leaving him 10 for 24 with two homers and two doubles over his last six games.

Although the Cardinals lost for the fifth time in seven games and fell into third place behind Pittsburgh, they remained just 1 1/2 back of NL Central-leading Milwaukee.

St. Louis' Joe Kelly (2-1, 3.90) hopes to regroup after giving up 11 runs and 15 hits over 7 2-3 innings in his two road outings since missing almost three months due to a severe hamstring strain.

The right-hander was fortunate not to factor in the decision Friday, when he allowed five runs and a season-high eight hits over 4 2-3 innings in a 7-6 loss at Wrigley Field.

Kelly should be able to put up a better performance as he faces the light-hitting Padres (.218) for the first time.

San Diego, though, has been getting healthier as Everth Cabrera returned from the disabled list Tuesday. The shortstop, who has been sidelined since July 1 with a left hamstring strain, went 1 for 4 and is hitting .218 with three homers in 81 games.

The Padres also welcomed back Gyorko on Monday and first baseman Yonder Alonso on Saturday.
