| |  | NY YANKEES: HITTING: Despite his decline from mediocrity into downright counter-productivity, SS DEREK JETER gets to hit atop the best lineup in baseball. Off an MVP-caliber season, OF CURTIS GRANDERSON is a true star. His average is mediocre, but his power is elite and the Yankees are letting him run when on base. After two years with a sub-.260 average, 1B MARK TEIXEIRA's talent seems to be fading. He still puts up huge power numbers playing in a bandbox. Coming off knee and thumb injuries, 3B ALEX RODRIGUEZ is a serious injury risk hitting in the middle of this lineup. 2B ROBINSON CANO will once again see as many RBI chances as anyone. He's been great in those situations the past two seasons. OFs NICK SWISHER and BRETT GARDNER offer power and SBs, respectively, though the Yankees may look to upgrade if they continue to post lackluster numbers. C RUSSELL MARTIN will get plenty of playing time now that Jesus Montero is in Seattle. Veteran slugger RAUL IBANEZ is the new DH in town, and will love hitting towards the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium.
STARTING PITCHING: CC SABATHIA struggled late last year and has logged a ridiculous number of innings over the past five years. He's a top-10 starter in the majors, but is starting to pass his prime. Newcomers HIROKI KURODA and MICHAEL PINEDA will both stabilize what was a shaky rotation last year. Kuroda, 37, posted a 3.07 ERA with the Dodgers and the 23-year-old Pineda has unlimited upside, fanning 173 batters in 171 innings with Seattle last season. IVAN NOVA benefitted from nearly nine runs of support per game. He keeps the ball down often enough to thrive in the Bronx, just without many strikeouts. PHIL HUGHES' stuff has regressed greatly since his days as a top prospect. He's trying to overcome conditioning problems this offseason. MANNY BANUELOS and DELLIN BETANCES are great prospects who may get a chance to start MLB games later this season.
RELIEF PITCHING: Trust MARIANO RIVERA to stay dominant until proven wrong. He was better in 2011 than he was in 2010 despite some velocity slippage. DAVID ROBERTSON has a firm hold on eighth-inning duties after an All-Star season. He's second in line for saves. RAFAEL SORIANO wasn't a total bust, as he did just fine after a rough April. He's settled into the seventh-inning role since Robertson is more trusted that he is. After Tommy John surgery, JOBA CHAMBERLAIN is aiming to be back this June. Middle reliever CORY WADE was reliable last year, and has a chance to rack up some vulture wins if he keeps going strong. | | SAN DIEGO: HITTING: This was by far the worst lineup in the National League in runs (3.66 per game), HR (91), and OPS (.653). 1B JESUS GUZMAN had 44 RBI in just 247 at-bats thanks to a 1.094 OPS with RISP. 1B YONDER ALONSO, the key piece of the Mat Latos trade, will play first every day, moving Guzman to a back-up role. OF CAMERON MAYBIN used his speed to steal 40 bases and score 82 runs. OF CARLOS QUENTIN was acquired from the White Sox and will provide much-needed power in the middle of the batting order when he returns to the field sometime in late April/early May after having knee surgery. Slugger KYLE BLANKS will fill the void. In 420 career at-bats, he has 20 homers, but also has a .219 BA and 152 strikeouts. SS JASON BARTLETT had a disappointing first season in San Diego, hitting only two home runs in 554 at-bats and posting a pathetic .615 OPS as the team's No. 2 hitter in the lineup. Mediocre OF WILL VENABLE (.705 OPS) would not start for any other team in the majors. 3B CHASE HEADLEY batted .289 with a .374 OBP, but failed to provide any power from the three-hole. Oft-injured C NICK HUNDLEY had an .824 OPS and 9 HR in half a season. SS ORLANDO HUDSON batted just .246 with 92 strikeouts and just 31 walks.
STARTING PITCHING: This young staff finished sixth in the majors with a 3.62 ERA. TIM STAUFFER struggled to pitch outside of spacious Petco Park, posting a 4.95 ERA and 1.39 WHIP on the road (2.57 ERA, 1.13 WHIP at home). Two starters both underwent surgery on their throwing shoulders last summer, but are expected to be ready for the start of the season. Lefty CLAYTON RICHARD had just 53 K and 38 BB in 99.2 innings, but he posted a strong 2.30 ERA and 1.11 WHIP at home last year. The 2011 campaign was the year to judge whether EDINSON VOLQUEZ was all the way back from major arm surgery. Well, the jury's in and the verdict isn't kind. The move to San Diego can only cure so much. Right-hander DUSTIN MOSELEY enjoyed his first season in the NL, posting career-best marks in ERA (3.30) and WHIP (1.28). But like Richard, his 64 K and 36 BB in 120 innings were unimpressive. CORY LUEBKE began 2011 in the bullpen, but was moved the rotation, which is where he'll stay in 2012. In 17 starts last year, he shined with a 3.31 ERA and 111 K in 100.2 IP.
RELIEF PITCHING: For the first time since 2008, somebody other than Heath Bell will close games for the Padres. HUSTON STREET will certainly benefit from the move to hitter haven Coors Field to pitcher-friendly Petco Park. Street had a 4.20 home ERA in three seasons in Colorado, while posting a stellar 2.59 ERA on the road. If Street gets hurt, the two leading candidates for the closer role are LUKE GREGERSON and ERNESTO FRIERI. Gregerson is the more consistent pitcher of the two, but Frieri throws harder than Gregerson and has a stellar 11.1 strikeout rate in his three-year career. |

With major league baseball's drug investigation posing a distraction for both the New York Yankees and San Diego, the Padres appear to be handling things better than their current opponent.
The Padres look to build on a convincing series-opening victory over the visiting Yankees on Saturday night.
One of 14 players facing lengthy suspensions for their ties to the Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic, Everth Cabrera matched a career high with four hits and San Diego (51-59) hit three homers in Friday's 7-2 win over New York.
The Padres have won eight of 11, but could soon be without their All-Star shortstop for some time. Monday appears to be the deadline for the players to accept suspensions related to MLB's probe.
"I can't say anything about that," said Cabrera, batting .285 and leading the NL with 37 steals.
He is willing to talk about his team's recent play.
"We have been better the last two weeks, competing a lot and everyone puts something to help the team to win the games," said Cabrera, who is 10 for 20 in the last four interleague games. "We have to keep doing this."
Though New York (56-52) has played the entire season without injured star Alex Rodriguez, his ties to the scandal continue to dominate the headlines. Rehabbing from hip and quad injuries, Rodriguez appears poised to join the Yankees in Chicago on Monday to face the White Sox.
"I think it's possible," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about Rodriquez, who will likely appeal any suspension.
Even with Curtis Granderson back from missing more than two months with the broken finger, New York can use any help after averaging 3.1 runs during a stretch of 10 losses in 15 games.
Starter CC Sabathia drove home one of the Yankees' two runs Friday. Granderson went 0 for 4 in his return. Derek Jeter had a hit but is 4 for 19 in five games this season.
Things might not get much easier for New York based on the way Padres starter Tyson Ross (2-4, 2.90 ERA) has pitched of late.
After making 19 straight relief appearances following a stint on the disabled list with a shoulder injury, Ross has allowed one run, five hits and struck out 13 in 14 innings to win two straight starts. He gave up three hits and fanned seven in eight innings to outpitch Arizona All-Star Patrick Corbin in Sunday's 1-0 victory.
"It's a great confidence builder," manager Bud Black told the Padres' official website about Ross, who is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in five starts this season. "Somebody told me once, if you do it one time, you can do it again."
The right-hander hopes to avoid the kind of outing he had in his only start against the Yankees for Oakland last season, when he yielded six runs and 12 hits, including three homers, in 4 1-3 innings of a 6-3 defeat.
New York counters with Ivan Nova (4-4, 3.41 ERA), who has not received a run of support in his last two outings. The right-hander allowed four total runs and walked six while going seven innings in each contest.
Nova, 2-3 with a 2.39 ERA as a starter since June 23, was outpitched by Tampa Bay's Chris Archer in taking last Saturday's 1-0 loss.
"You got to stay trying to keep the game close, hoping that they're going to score a run at some point," Nova told the Yankees' official website. "That's the only thing that I can do."
