Manager: Mike Matheny (sixth season)
Who's new? OF Dexter Fowler, C Eric Fryer, LH Brett Cecil
Who's gone? 1B Brandon Moss, OF Matt Holliday, OF Jeremy Hazelbaker, RHP Jaime Garcia, RHP Seth Maness, RHP Jerome Williams
Projected lineup: CF Dexter Fowler (.276, 13 HR, 48 RBI, 13 SB with Cubs), SS Aledmys Diaz (.300, 17, 65), 1B Matt Carpenter (.271, 21, 68), RF Stephen Piscotty (.273, 22, 85), C Yadier Molina (.307, 8, 58), 3B Jedd Gyorko (.243, 30, 59), 2B Kolten Wong (.240, 5, 23), LF Randal Grichuk (.240, 24, 68)
Rotation: RH Carlos Martinez (16-9, 3.04 ERA), RH Adam Wainwright (13-9, 4.62), RH Mike Leake (9-12, 4.69), RH Michael Wacha (7-7, 5.09), RH Lance Lynn (did not pitch - Tommy John surgery)
Key relievers: RH Seung-hwan Oh (6-3, 1.92 ERA 19/23 SV), LH Kevin Siegrist (6-3, 2.77), RH Trevor Rosenthal (2-4, 4.46, 14/18 SV), LH Brett Cecil (1-7, 3.93 with Blue Jays), RH Jonathan Broxton (4-2, 4.30), RH Matt Bowman (2-5, 3.46), RH Miguel Socolovich (1-0, 2.00)
Hot spots: Rotation. The back end looked like a big leap of faith when spring training began. Wainwright and Wacha are coming off their worst seasons. Another 2013 World Series mainstay, Lynn, didn't pitch last season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. Then, on the first day of camp, 22-year-old right-hander Alex Reyes learned he needed Tommy John himself. That leaves a lot of question marks after ace Martinez ' more than any Cardinals staff has faced in years.
Outlook: This 40-man roster hints at a team in transition. Venerable 34-year-old catcher Molina is still St. Louis' biggest star. Reyes' injury hurts the youth movement, but the Cardinals are still stacked with talented 20-something sluggers ' Piscotty, Diaz, Gyorko and Grichuk ' who could emerge as household names. Adding Fowler's speed and patience should complement an already deep lineup. The pitching staff is a different matter. Barring a big resurgence from Wainwright, Lynn and Wacha (or a big trade) it's hard to see the Cardinals contending for more than a wild card spot in the Cubs' shadow. | | PITTSBURGH: 2016: 78-83, third place
Manager: Clint Hurdle (seventh season)
Who's new? RHP Daniel Hudson, IF Phil Gosselin
Who's gone? IF Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, SP Jeff Locke, SP Ryan Vogelsong, RP Neftali Feliz, C Eric Fryer
Projected lineup: 2B Josh Harrison (.283, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB), 1B Josh Bell (.273, 3, 19), RF Andrew McCutchen (.256, 24, 79), CF Starling Marte (.311, 9, 46, 47 SB), LF Gregory Polanco (.258, 22, 86), 3B Jung-ho Kang (.255, 21, 62), C Francisco Cervelli (.264, 1, 33), SS Jordy Mercer (.256, 11, 59)
Rotation: RH Gerrit Cole (7-10, 3.88 ERA), RH Ivan Nova (12-8, 4.17 for Yankees and Pirates), RH Jameson Taillon (5-4, 3.38), RH Chad Kuhl (5-4, 4.20), RH Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.25 with Blue Jays and Pirates) or Steven Brault (0-3, 4.86) or Trevor Williams (1-1, 7.82) or Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.24)
Key relievers: LH Tony Watson (2-5, 3.06, 15/20 SV), RH Daniel Hudson (3-2, 5.22 with Diamondbacks), LH Felipe Rivero (1-6, 4.09 for Nationals and Pirates), RH Juan Nicasio (10-7, 4.50), LH Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 4.52 with Mets and Pirates), RH Jared Hughes (1-1, 3.03), LH Wade LeBlanc (4-0, 3.77 with Mariners and Pirates)
Hot spots: Rotation and closer. Right-hander Glasnow, 23, is a consensus top-25 prospect who made his major league debut last year. The Pirates would love to see him seize the fifth starter's job in camp, but right-hander Hutchison offers a more experienced option if Glasnow isn't ready. Watson became the closer after Mark Melancon was traded to Washington last summer, but his sinker/slider/changeup mix isn't typical ninth-inning stuff. Keep an eye on Rivero, a 25-year-old lefty acquired in the Melancon trade. His fastball actually gained velocity as last season wore on, eventually touching triple digits. Rivero might begin the season as the set-up man but his ascension to the ninth inning seems inevitable.
Outlook: The Pirates made some interesting tweaks after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. They made no major trades, signed only two major league free agents (pitchers Nova and Hudson) and revamped Hurdle's coaching staff. They also moved their outfielders around: McCutchen goes from center to right, Marte from left to center, and Polanco from right to left. McCutchen is coming off the worst season of his career. So is ace right-hander Cole. The path back to the playoffs begins with the two stars bouncing back. If the team's other homegrown talent ' Taillon, Glasnow, Bell and Polanco ' continue their evolution, Pittsburgh should return to the postseason in 2017. |
| | Cardinals continue climb with visit to Pirates
PITTSBURGH -- The St. Louis Cardinals have a short, steep climb if they are going to push their way into the playoffs. Next up is a club, the Pittsburgh Pirates, that could be spoilers after they got a confidence shot in their last game. St. Louis opens a three-game set Friday at PNC Park, its final road series. The Cardinals finished a series sweep of Cincinnati with an 8-5 victory Thursday to reach 80 wins (80-72) and keep themselves five games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central. In a more realistic situation, St. Louis is 1 1/2 games behind Colorado for the final wild-card spot with Milwaukee one back of the Rockies. Pittsburgh (69-84) was off Thursday but might still have been basking a bit after breaking a seven-game losing streak Wednesday with a walk-off 6-4 victory over the Brewers. "It's great. It's like you popped a balloon. It's awesome," Pirates starter Steven Brault said after a no-decision. "There's no (more) pressure. "Realize that it's been a tough little stretch, but we're still a good team. We're still putting good at-bats together. The pitchers are coming out and pitching. It's just that things weren't going our way. Hopefully, that will change and we can end the season with a really positive eight, nine wins at the end of the year. That would be pretty awesome." That would be disastrous for St. Louis if it happens this weekend. "We know every game is precious right now, and we just have to get back to winning some ballgames," Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha, who is scheduled to start Friday, said after his most recent outing. "We know that we have a lot of games left with the guys ahead of us, and it's up to us to go out there and win those games." Wacha (12-8, 4.02 ERA) took the loss Saturday in a 4-1 game against the Chicago Cubs. He pitched 5 2/3 innings but was hurt by five walks and a few defensive lapses by his teammates. Wacha is 5-3 with a 3.91 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) against Pittsburgh. The Pirates will counter with Ivan Nova (11-14, 4.20 ERA). Nova is 2-8 with a 6.22 ERA in 11 starts since the All-Star break and could be tiring. He has set career highs in innings (180) and starts (29) this season. He hasn't had a win since Aug. 20 -- against St. Louis in the MLB Little League Classic. In addition, he left his previous start in the seventh because of right calf discomfort. He said it was minor and predicted he would be fine for his next start, and that's how it has played out. In that most recent start, Nova gave up a go-ahead run before the calf problem drove him from what was a 2-1 loss to Cincinnati. "(During) some tough times like I've been going through, it's easy to say, 'Don't think about it'," Nova said, "but in the back of your mind you think about it." Nova is 1-2 with a 4.82 ERA in three career starts, all this season, against the Cardinals. That includes a 7-0 Pittsburgh loss to Wacha and St. Louis on Sept. 10, when he gave up five runs in five innings. |
