8/30/2017 @ CHICAGO CUBS
LA DODGERS: 2016: 91-71, first place, lost to Chicago Cubs in NLCS
Manager: Dave Roberts (second season)
Who's new? IF Logan Forsythe, OF Franklin Gutierrez, OF Brett Eibner, RHP Sergio Romo
Who's gone? OF Josh Reddick, C Carlos Ruiz, RHP Joe Blanton, RHP Jose De Leon, LHP J.P. Howell, RHP Louis Coleman, RHP Jesse Chavez
Projected lineup: 2B Logan Forsythe (.264, 20 HR, 52 RBI with Rays) or Chase Utley (.252, 14, 52), SS Corey Seager (.308, 26 72), 3B Justin Turner (.275, 27, 90), 1B Adrian Gonzalez (.285, 18, 90), RF Yasiel Puig (.263, 11, 45) or Andre Ethier (.208, 1, 2 in 16 games), C Yasmani Grandal (.228, 27, 72), CF Joc Pederson (.246, 25, 68), LF Andrew Toles (.314, 3, 16) or Trayce Thompson (.225, 13, 32)
Rotation: LH Clayton Kershaw (12-4, 1.69 ERA), RH Kenta Maeda (16-11, 3.48), LH Rich Hill (12-5, 2.12 with A's and Dodgers), RH Brandon McCarthy (2-3, 4.95), LH Hyun-Jin Ryu (0-1, 11.57 in one game) or LH Alex Wood (1-4, 3.73)
Key relievers: RH Kenley Jansen (3-2, 1.83, 47/53 SV), RH Pedro Baez (3-2, 3.04), LH Grant Dayton (0-1, 2.05), LH Luis Avilan (3-0, 3.20), RH Josh Fields (1-0, 4.63 with Astros and Dodgers), RH Sergio Romo (1-0, 2.64 with Giants), RH Chris Hatcher (5-4, 5.53)
Hot spots: Outfield and rotation. The Dodgers set a record for Disabled List trips in 2016. Ethier, who missed most of last season with a broken tibia, compared his recent back injury to 'Groundhog Day.' Even without Ethier there isn't room for Puig, Pederson, Toles, Thompson, Scott Van Slyke, Franklin Gutierrez and Brett Eibner. The pitching staff was decimated last year too, but a deep farm system produced a wave of capable reinforcements. If Scott Kazmir, McCarthy or Ryu can't pitch, Julio Urias, Brock Stewart and Ross Stripling can step in.
Outlook: After two straight winters laying low on the free agent market, Andrew Friedman bet big on his 2016 roster. Turner, Jansen, Hill and Utley all re-signed, giving the Dodgers a chance to prove last season's NLCS run wasn't a fluke. A full season of Kershaw and Hill ' to name just two ' would improve the team's chances of claiming a fifth straight division title. If the Dodgers want to take the next step, they'll have to get past the defending champion Chicago Cubs, a potential perennial powerhouse whose roster remains similarly intact.
PITTSBURGH: 2016: 78-83, third place
Manager: Clint Hurdle (seventh season)
Who's new? RHP Daniel Hudson, IF Phil Gosselin
Who's gone? IF Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, SP Jeff Locke, SP Ryan Vogelsong, RP Neftali Feliz, C Eric Fryer
Projected lineup: 2B Josh Harrison (.283, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB), 1B Josh Bell (.273, 3, 19), RF Andrew McCutchen (.256, 24, 79), CF Starling Marte (.311, 9, 46, 47 SB), LF Gregory Polanco (.258, 22, 86), 3B Jung-ho Kang (.255, 21, 62), C Francisco Cervelli (.264, 1, 33), SS Jordy Mercer (.256, 11, 59)
Rotation: RH Gerrit Cole (7-10, 3.88 ERA), RH Ivan Nova (12-8, 4.17 for Yankees and Pirates), RH Jameson Taillon (5-4, 3.38), RH Chad Kuhl (5-4, 4.20), RH Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.25 with Blue Jays and Pirates) or Steven Brault (0-3, 4.86) or Trevor Williams (1-1, 7.82) or Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.24)
Key relievers: LH Tony Watson (2-5, 3.06, 15/20 SV), RH Daniel Hudson (3-2, 5.22 with Diamondbacks), LH Felipe Rivero (1-6, 4.09 for Nationals and Pirates), RH Juan Nicasio (10-7, 4.50), LH Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 4.52 with Mets and Pirates), RH Jared Hughes (1-1, 3.03), LH Wade LeBlanc (4-0, 3.77 with Mariners and Pirates)
Hot spots: Rotation and closer. Right-hander Glasnow, 23, is a consensus top-25 prospect who made his major league debut last year. The Pirates would love to see him seize the fifth starter's job in camp, but right-hander Hutchison offers a more experienced option if Glasnow isn't ready. Watson became the closer after Mark Melancon was traded to Washington last summer, but his sinker/slider/changeup mix isn't typical ninth-inning stuff. Keep an eye on Rivero, a 25-year-old lefty acquired in the Melancon trade. His fastball actually gained velocity as last season wore on, eventually touching triple digits. Rivero might begin the season as the set-up man but his ascension to the ninth inning seems inevitable.
Outlook: The Pirates made some interesting tweaks after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. They made no major trades, signed only two major league free agents (pitchers Nova and Hudson) and revamped Hurdle's coaching staff. They also moved their outfielders around: McCutchen goes from center to right, Marte from left to center, and Polanco from right to left. McCutchen is coming off the worst season of his career. So is ace right-hander Cole. The path back to the playoffs begins with the two stars bouncing back. If the team's other homegrown talent ' Taillon, Glasnow, Bell and Polanco ' continue their evolution, Pittsburgh should return to the postseason in 2017.
Dodgers aim to bounce back from heartbreaker vs. Pirates

PITTSBURGH -- After a heartbreaking loss on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Dodgers will look to respond when they again face the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday at PNC Park.

Los Angeles lost 1-0 in 10 innings Wednesday after left-handed starter Rich Hill carried a perfect game into the ninth and a no-hitter into the 10th. Josh Harrison hit a leadoff walk-off home run in the 10th inning to give Pittsburgh the win.

Hill said he was disappointed he couldn't get the win, but he looked forward to returning to the park Thursday.

"I know it sounds a little boring, but that's it," Hill said. "We have a lot of great things going on here. Something what you have to continue to do is put in the work just one day at a time. Take the series and get back home."

Even with that loss, the Dodgers (89-36) have a chance to win the four-game series on Thursday. Los Angeles won the first two games and has won 15 of 20 in August.

Harrison, who has four home runs in his past seven games, gave Pirates fans something to cheer for after a stretch of eight losses in their previous 10 games. Pittsburgh (61-66) is all but out of the playoff race.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle hopes to experience a similar atmosphere Thursday.

"It's a great environment to play through for the guys that were on the field," Hurdle said. "I know there are guys that have experienced more. (David) Freese has been to the seventh game of the World Series. But for some of our guys, to be a part of that, watch it unfold, battle through it and win a game, I think that adds to the value of the experience you can gain up here."

Dodgers left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (4-6, 3.45 ERA) likely won't match Hill's outing, but he will attempt to produce another efficient start. He didn't allow a run in three of his past four games, with his most impressive effort coming against the Mets on Aug. 6, when he one-hit New York through seven innings.

In his last time out, Ryu didn't surrender a run while allowing just three hits with four strikeouts in six innings against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

The Pirates will answer with Chad Kuhl (6-8, 4.52 ERA). The right-hander had one of his better starts of the season his last time out. Kuhl allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday despite rain delaying the game nearly two hours in the second inning.

Kuhl took the loss when he faced the Dodgers earlier this season. In Los Angeles on May 10, he gave up four runs on six hits in five innings.

Los Angeles, which scored 14 combined runs in the first two games of this series, will look to bounce back offensively after being shut out Wednesday.

Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager could help. He will carry a 12-game hitting streak into Thursday after going 3-for-5 Wednesday.
