Manager: Terry Collins (seventh season)
Who's new? No one of note
Who's gone? 1B James Loney, IF/OF Kelly Johnson, OF Alejandro De Aza, RHP Bartolo Colon, LHP Jonathon Niese
Projected lineup: CF Curtis Granderson (.237, 30 HR, 59 RBI), 3B David Wright (.226, 7, 14 in 37 games), LF Yoenis Cespedes (.280, 31, 86), RF Jay Bruce (.250, 33, 99 with Reds and Mets), 2B Neil Walker (.282, 23, 55), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (.280, 23, 62), 1B Lucas Duda (.229, 7, 23 in 47 games), C Travis d'Arnaud (.247, 4, 15)
Rotation: RH Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60 ERA), RH Jacob deGrom (7-8, 3.04), RH Matt Harvey (4-10, 4.86), LH Steven Matz (9-8, 3.40), RH Zack Wheeler or RH Robert Gsellman (4-2, 2.42) or RH Seth Lugo (5-2, 2.67)
Key relievers: RH Jeurys Familia (3-4, 2.55, 51/56 SV), RH Addison Reed (4-2, 1.97), RH Hansel Robles (6-4, 3.48), LH Jerry Blevins (4-2, 2.79), RH Fernando Salas (3-7, 3.91)
Hot spots: First base and third base. Duda missed 115 games last season because of a stress fracture in his lower back. When healthy, the veteran first baseman slugged a career-low .714. Former first-round draft pick Dominic Smith, 21, could be in position to battle for the starting spot soon. He'll likely begin the season at Triple-A. Franchise third baseman Wright doesn't have a hot prospect pushing him out the door, but how much game does he have left? The perennial All-Star only began throwing a baseball in February after an eight-month recovery from neck surgery. Wright had a degenerative back and has only played 75 games the last two years. Getting a full season from him at age 34 would be a shock.
Outlook: The Mets' championship window opened with a surprise World Series run in 2015, and their front office seems convinced it's still open. The club invested four years and $110 million to keep Yoenis Cespedes in the outfield. The Mets also exercised club options on Jay Bruce and Jose Reyes, and brought Neil Walker back on a qualifying offer. The result? Almost everyone returns from a club that lost a wild-card game to the Giants last October. The franchise is oozing young pitching ' Syndergaard might be the best right-hander on the planet ' but another World Series appearance might be too much to expect from a team that ranked 25th in runs per game last season. | | PITTSBURGH: 2016: 78-83, third place
Manager: Clint Hurdle (seventh season)
Who's new? RHP Daniel Hudson, IF Phil Gosselin
Who's gone? IF Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, SP Jeff Locke, SP Ryan Vogelsong, RP Neftali Feliz, C Eric Fryer
Projected lineup: 2B Josh Harrison (.283, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB), 1B Josh Bell (.273, 3, 19), RF Andrew McCutchen (.256, 24, 79), CF Starling Marte (.311, 9, 46, 47 SB), LF Gregory Polanco (.258, 22, 86), 3B Jung-ho Kang (.255, 21, 62), C Francisco Cervelli (.264, 1, 33), SS Jordy Mercer (.256, 11, 59)
Rotation: RH Gerrit Cole (7-10, 3.88 ERA), RH Ivan Nova (12-8, 4.17 for Yankees and Pirates), RH Jameson Taillon (5-4, 3.38), RH Chad Kuhl (5-4, 4.20), RH Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.25 with Blue Jays and Pirates) or Steven Brault (0-3, 4.86) or Trevor Williams (1-1, 7.82) or Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.24)
Key relievers: LH Tony Watson (2-5, 3.06, 15/20 SV), RH Daniel Hudson (3-2, 5.22 with Diamondbacks), LH Felipe Rivero (1-6, 4.09 for Nationals and Pirates), RH Juan Nicasio (10-7, 4.50), LH Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 4.52 with Mets and Pirates), RH Jared Hughes (1-1, 3.03), LH Wade LeBlanc (4-0, 3.77 with Mariners and Pirates)
Hot spots: Rotation and closer. Right-hander Glasnow, 23, is a consensus top-25 prospect who made his major league debut last year. The Pirates would love to see him seize the fifth starter's job in camp, but right-hander Hutchison offers a more experienced option if Glasnow isn't ready. Watson became the closer after Mark Melancon was traded to Washington last summer, but his sinker/slider/changeup mix isn't typical ninth-inning stuff. Keep an eye on Rivero, a 25-year-old lefty acquired in the Melancon trade. His fastball actually gained velocity as last season wore on, eventually touching triple digits. Rivero might begin the season as the set-up man but his ascension to the ninth inning seems inevitable.
Outlook: The Pirates made some interesting tweaks after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. They made no major trades, signed only two major league free agents (pitchers Nova and Hudson) and revamped Hurdle's coaching staff. They also moved their outfielders around: McCutchen goes from center to right, Marte from left to center, and Polanco from right to left. McCutchen is coming off the worst season of his career. So is ace right-hander Cole. The path back to the playoffs begins with the two stars bouncing back. If the team's other homegrown talent ' Taillon, Glasnow, Bell and Polanco ' continue their evolution, Pittsburgh should return to the postseason in 2017. |
| | Harvey looks to finish off Mets' series against Pirates
PITTSBURGH -- Matt Harvey, you're up. The right-hander is scheduled to start for the New York Mets when they meet the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park in the final game of a weekend series on Sunday night. The Mets, who have lost four of their past six games after dropping Saturday's contest 5-4 to Pittsburgh, have some pitching woes. Their starters aren't giving them enough innings often enough -- Jacob deGrom's win in 8 2/3 innings Friday against the Pirates being an exception. The bullpen is often overtaxed. And starters Noah Syndergaard (right lat muscle injury) and Steven Matz (left elbow inflammation) are out with no set return date. New York could use more of what deGrom gave them. "He did exactly what we needed," Mets Manager Terry Collins said. "He got us extremely deep in the game." On Saturday, Zack Wheeler got the Mets through six innings -- just the fourth time in his past nine starts he has lasted through six -- and left with a 4-3 lead. But the New York bullpen blew it when the Pirates tied it in the ninth against reliever Addison Reed. "The way I'm pitching right now is unacceptable," Reed said. "It's not what is expected of me. It's not what I'm getting paid for. I have to pitch better than this because right now it's just unacceptable." Pittsburgh then won it in the 10th against Tyler Pill, pressed into making his major league debut in a pressure situation, and Josh Edgin. Collins had hoped for more from Wheeler, but said going into the seventh, "Zack got a blister on his finger, he said it wasn't really bothering him but it looked pretty bad. I said, 'Hey, we've just got to get six outs to get the ball to Addison,' so I felt great. "We got out of the seventh, we got out of the eighth and we gave the ball to Addison Reed. We were right where we wanted. ... I got the ball to the guy I wanted to get it to. We wanted outs, we didn't get them. It's just one of those things." One of the types of things that has contributed to the Mets' 20-27 record, more specifically. Harvey (3-3, 5.36 ERA) is 0-1 in three career starts against Pittsburgh but has not faced the Pirates since 2015. He's coming off of a win Tuesday as the Mets beat San Diego 9-3, but he only lasted five innings, giving up two runs on three hits, striking out six and walking four. It was the fourth time he has allowed two runs or fewer in a start this season. Harvey's control has been a little off. He has walked 26 batters in 50 1/3 innings, compared with 25 walks in 92 2/3 innings last season. The scheduled starter for Pittsburgh (23-27) is Tyler Glasnow (2-3, 6.69 ERA), who has never faced the Mets. He will be making his 10th start, and it has been trying at times for the 23-year-old who began the season in the major leagues for the first time. On Tuesday at Atlanta, he had one of his better outings in a no-decision, allowing two runs in six innings, but a long rain delay cost him a win as the Braves came back for a 6-5 walk-off win. He also went 3-for-3 at the plate. "Another step forward," manager Clint Hurdle said of Glasnow. |
