Manager: Joe Maddon (third season)
Who's new? OF Jon Jay, RHP Wade Davis, LHP Brett Anderson, RHP Koji Uehara, LHP Brian Duensing, RHP Eddie Butler
Who's gone? OF Dexter Fowler, IF/OF Jorge Soler, LHP Aroldis Chapman, LHP Travis Wood, RHP Trevor Cahill, RHP Jason Hammel
Projected lineup: LF Kyle Schwarber (.000, 0 HR, 0 RBI in two games), 3B Kris Bryant (.292, 39, 102), 1B Anthony Rizzo (.292, 32, 109), 2B Ben Zobrist (.272, 18, 76), SS Addison Russell (.238, 21, 95), RF Jason Heyward (.230, 7, 49, 11 SB), C Willson Contreras (.282, 12, 35), CF Jon Jay (.291, 2, 26 with Padres) or Albert Almora (.277, 3, 14 in 47 games)
Rotation: LH Jon Lester (19-5, 2.44 ERA), RH Jake Arrieta (18-8, 3.10), RH Kyle Hendricks (16-8, 2.13), RH John Lackey (11-8, 3.35), LH Brett Anderson (1-2, 11.91 in four games with Dodgers) or LH Mike Montgomery (4-5, 2.52 with Mariners and Cubs) or RH Eddie Butler (2-5, 7.17 with Rockies) or LH Rob Zastryzny (1-0, 1.13 ERA in eight games) or RH Alec Mills (0-0, 13.50 in three games with Royals)
Key relievers: RH Wade Davis (2-1, 1.87, 27/30 SV with Royals), RH Pedro Strop (2-2, 2.85), RH Hector Rondon (2-3, 3.53, 18/23 SV), RH Koji Uehara (2-3, 3.45, 7/9 SV with Red Sox), RH Carl Edwards Jr. (0-1, 3.75), RH Justin Grimm (2-1, 4.10), LH Brian Duensing (1-0, 4.05 with Royals)
Hot spots: Fifth Starter. Of all the candidates vying to replace Hammel, who signed with Kansas City as a free agent, most have plenty of upside but didn't log many innings last year. That includes Anderson, who had one productive season and one unproductive season for the Dodgers. Keep an eye on southpaw Montgomery, who tossed two shutouts as a starter for the Mariners in 2015, came to the Cubs last year in a midseason trade, then was effective as a reliever. Last time he was on the mound, he recorded the save in Game 7 of the World Series.
Outlook: There hasn't been a back-to-back champion this century. For opponents of the Cubs, that might be the most tangible nugget of hope. Most of the key players return from a powerhouse team that played historically good defense, got no fewer than 165 innings from each of its top five starters, and featured a deep lineup led by NL MVP Kris Bryant. In the bullpen, two-time All-Star Davis is capable of replacing closer Chapman if he's healthy. Among the Cubs' regular position players, only Zobrist and new center fielder Jay are over 30 ' everyone else is either entering or in the midst of his prime. This is a strong outlook. | | PITTSBURGH: 2016: 78-83, third place
Manager: Clint Hurdle (seventh season)
Who's new? RHP Daniel Hudson, IF Phil Gosselin
Who's gone? IF Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, SP Jeff Locke, SP Ryan Vogelsong, RP Neftali Feliz, C Eric Fryer
Projected lineup: 2B Josh Harrison (.283, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB), 1B Josh Bell (.273, 3, 19), RF Andrew McCutchen (.256, 24, 79), CF Starling Marte (.311, 9, 46, 47 SB), LF Gregory Polanco (.258, 22, 86), 3B Jung-ho Kang (.255, 21, 62), C Francisco Cervelli (.264, 1, 33), SS Jordy Mercer (.256, 11, 59)
Rotation: RH Gerrit Cole (7-10, 3.88 ERA), RH Ivan Nova (12-8, 4.17 for Yankees and Pirates), RH Jameson Taillon (5-4, 3.38), RH Chad Kuhl (5-4, 4.20), RH Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.25 with Blue Jays and Pirates) or Steven Brault (0-3, 4.86) or Trevor Williams (1-1, 7.82) or Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.24)
Key relievers: LH Tony Watson (2-5, 3.06, 15/20 SV), RH Daniel Hudson (3-2, 5.22 with Diamondbacks), LH Felipe Rivero (1-6, 4.09 for Nationals and Pirates), RH Juan Nicasio (10-7, 4.50), LH Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 4.52 with Mets and Pirates), RH Jared Hughes (1-1, 3.03), LH Wade LeBlanc (4-0, 3.77 with Mariners and Pirates)
Hot spots: Rotation and closer. Right-hander Glasnow, 23, is a consensus top-25 prospect who made his major league debut last year. The Pirates would love to see him seize the fifth starter's job in camp, but right-hander Hutchison offers a more experienced option if Glasnow isn't ready. Watson became the closer after Mark Melancon was traded to Washington last summer, but his sinker/slider/changeup mix isn't typical ninth-inning stuff. Keep an eye on Rivero, a 25-year-old lefty acquired in the Melancon trade. His fastball actually gained velocity as last season wore on, eventually touching triple digits. Rivero might begin the season as the set-up man but his ascension to the ninth inning seems inevitable.
Outlook: The Pirates made some interesting tweaks after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. They made no major trades, signed only two major league free agents (pitchers Nova and Hudson) and revamped Hurdle's coaching staff. They also moved their outfielders around: McCutchen goes from center to right, Marte from left to center, and Polanco from right to left. McCutchen is coming off the worst season of his career. So is ace right-hander Cole. The path back to the playoffs begins with the two stars bouncing back. If the team's other homegrown talent ' Taillon, Glasnow, Bell and Polanco ' continue their evolution, Pittsburgh should return to the postseason in 2017. |
| | Cubs look for revenge against Pirates
PITTSBURGH -- A week ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates cruised into Chicago and swept the Cubs in a three-game series. Now, the Cubs will get a chance for some comeuppance as they visit Pittsburgh for a three-game series. The series will have a bit of a different feel, and not just because of the change in location. Chad Kuhl will start for the Pirates against Chicago lefty Brett Anderson in the series opener Monday. Neither of those pitchers appeared in the first series between the two teams this season. Kuhl (1-1, 2.60 ERA) is in his second major league season, and he will be making his 18th career start. But he already knows all about the Cubs, a team he faced three times in 2016. He was 0-2 with a 10.45 ERA in those games, and 12 of the 40 career runs he has allowed have come against the Cubs. Even so, Kuhl and the rest of the Pirates' young starters are full of confidence this season. Kuhl held the St. Louis Cardinals to two runs in six innings in his last outing, and he hasn't given up more than two runs in any of his starts this season. The rest of the Pirates' young staff is pitching well, too. The last time through the rotation, Pittsburgh's starters gave up 10 earned runs in 29 innings for a 3.10 ERA. Kuhl said the strong starts are becoming contagious. "It's awesome," Kuhl said. "It's just fun to see. ... I think we have a really good group, especially with (Ivan) Nova and Gerrit (Cole) being the veterans of the staff. It's a good group that wants to get better." While Kuhl has had a rough go against the Cubs in his short career, the opposite is true for Anderson (1-0, 4.40 ERA). The 29-year-old lefty came to the Cubs this offseason from the Los Angeles Dodgers and spent most of the early part of his career with the Oakland A's in the American League, so his experience against the Pirates is limited. Anderson has a 1-1 career record with a 3.77 ERA in three starts against the Pirates, but that doesn't tell the whole story. He dominated the Pirates in 2014, holding them to one run over 13 1/3 innings in two starts. But in his first appearance since returning from back surgery last August, the Pirates jumped on him for five runs in one inning. He has been having a rough go of it lately, as well. After cruising through his first two starts, Anderson allowed six runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings against Milwaukee on April 18. After that game, catcher Miguel Montero took the blame for Anderson's poor results. "I didn't call a good game for him," Montero said to the Chicago Tribune. "I told him I was sorry because he had good stuff going, and the results were different. I apologized to him because I didn't do my job." The Cubs arrive in Pittsburgh after a 7-5 loss at Cincinnati on Sunday, a result that snapped Chicago's four-game winning streak. The Pirates beat the New York Yankees 4-1 on Sunday, giving Pittsburgh two wins in the three-game series. |
