KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY METS: NEW YORK (AP) - The big names for the New York Mets this season: Matt Harvey, David Wright, Tommy John.
Finally confident they're a playoff contender, the Mets absorbed a familiar setback in spring training - two of them, really. Zack Wheeler and Josh Edgin became the latest New York pitchers to have reconstructive elbow surgery, sidelining both until next year.
Wheeler's injury prevents the Mets from lining up three electric young arms at the top of their rotation. And the loss of Edgin, who had a 1.32 ERA last season, leaves the bullpen without a dependable lefty.
But the return of Harvey, an imposing ace back from his own Tommy John operation in 2013, has the team talking about October aspirations.
''We've been sitting around for four years asking everybody to be patient,'' manager Terry Collins said when camp opened. ''Well, it's time.''
Former batting champ Michael Cuddyer was signed to add offense, and his Virginia hometown buddy Wright looks healthy again at the plate. So while hardly anyone expects the Mets to unseat Washington atop the NL East, anything short of a wild-card push would be a disappointment.
That's a new outlook for a big-market club that has spent several years trimming payroll while rebuilding under general manager Sandy Alderson. New York improved by five wins last year and finished 79-83, its sixth consecutive losing season since moving into Citi Field.
''Is the team capable of winning 89-90 games? Yeah, I think the team is capable,'' Alderson said last month. ''It has that capacity. I think it has that potential.''
Harvey highlights a solid group of starters that includes 2014 NL Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom, who made a successful comeback in the minors from Tommy John surgery - the ligament-replacement procedure named for its pioneer pitching patient in 1974.
Dillon Gee, who was headed for the bullpen, instead slides back into the rotation as Wheeler's substitute. He rejoins Jonathon Niese and 41-year-old Bartolo Colon, a 15-game winner last season.
With young right-hander Rafael Montero also in the mix, plus top prospects Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz (a former Tommy John patient) getting close, the Mets might indeed have enough pitching depth to offset the injuries.
Especially if Tommy John veterans Jenrry Mejia and Bobby Parnell can lock down games in the late innings.
Mejia had his operation in 2011, shifted to a relief role last season and posted 28 saves. Parnell, the team's previous closer, had surgery last April and could be back this May.
New York is hardly the only team hurt by the recent rash of torn elbow ligaments all over baseball. Look no further than division rivals Washington, Miami and Atlanta.
But for a club that's been rebuilding around a young stable of power arms, rebuilding all those elbows has taken its toll on progress.
''Every guy that throws hard eventually is going to have it,'' Wheeler said.
The regular season begins April 6 in Washington. Here are some other story lines to watch for with the Mets this season:
POWER COMPANY: New York finished 12th in the National League in slugging percentage (.364) last year and 13th in batting average (.238). More is needed from Curtis Granderson, who hit .227 with 20 homers and 66 RBIs in his first season with the Mets after signing a $60 million, four-year contract. Kevin Long, a Granderson favorite during his Yankees days, was hired as hitting coach - and the Mets moved in the Citi Field fences for the second time to help Granderson, Wright and Lucas Duda in right-center. Wright, a seven-time All-Star, is eager to rebound after a left shoulder injury contributed to his 2014 bust. Duda will try to repeat his breakout season of 30 homers and 92 RBIs.
UP THE MIDDLE: Outside of Gold Glove center fielder Juan Lagares, the defense appears shaky. Wilmer Flores, a young hitter with a suspect glove, starts at shortstop - a gaping hole since Jose Reyes left following the 2011 season. All-Star second baseman Daniel Murphy is also limited defensively, so double-play chances could get dicey. Passed balls and wild throws are a concern for catcher Travis d'Arnaud.
UNDER PRESSURE: Increased expectations mean added scrutiny for Collins entering the final guaranteed season of his contract. Word is Alderson was even considering a change last year before deciding to bring Collins back. In truth, this is probably his first chance in five years to manage a Mets team talented enough to contend - but it might be his only one.
PITTSBURGH: PITTSBURGH (AP) - The scenario was familiar. The destination not so much.
A veteran player with not much time left leaving millions of dollars on the table for one last run to glory. Only A.J. Burnett didn't walk away from his $12.75 million player option with the Philadelphia Phillies for Los Angeles, Washington or St. Louis.
Nope, the 38-year-old well-traveled (and well tattooed) pitcher practically sprinted to Pittsburgh. His arrival in 2012 marked a sea change in the once-floundering organization's direction. His return three years later signals - he hopes - the end of the team's slow but steady slog from downtrodden afterthought to world champion. And he's not kidding.
''I want to win a ring and I want to win a ring in Pittsburgh,'' Burnett said.
The Pirates are as close to being in the conversation as they've been in nearly a quarter century. And they've opened up their wallets, at least a little, to get there. Pittsburgh made Francisco Liriano the highest-paid free agent in team history when they signed lefthander to a three-year, $39-million deal in the offseason to continue the career resurgence that began when they took a two-year flier on him in 2013. And while Burnett took a cut, he isn't exactly going broke. He'll make $8 million to work as the third man in the rotation behind Liriano and Gerrit Cole.
Pittsburgh even spent $5 million for the rights to sign Korean infielder Jung-Ho Kang, who hit 40 home runs on the other side of the world last year and gives the Pirates an intriguing if unproven option should shortstop Jordy Mercer falter or second baseman Neil Walker's back flare up.
General manager Neal Huntington remains adamant his team's budget will never compare to those of clubs in larger markets but allows there is ''more margin for error'' than in years' past.
''We've built a deeper club because of the money allocated to us,'' he said. ''But we need to continue to grow and mature. We want to put ourselves in a position to win the World Series.''
There are worse places to start than in Pittsburgh, which backed up its breakthrough year in 2013 with a second straight postseason berth in 2014. The playoff run ended abruptly against Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants in the NL wild card game. Yet the point had been made. The Pirates aren't going anywhere.
''It would've been easy to say 2013 was a fluke and we just got lucky,'' centerfielder Andrew McCutchen said. ''But we showed up in `14 and were able to do the same thing. We know we're for real. And other teams know they just can't come in (thinking), `All right, we're going to beat the Pirates.' We're not that team anymore.''
They're also not where they want to be, at least not yet. A National League Central title would avoid the fickleness of a one-game scenario. Pittsburgh believes it's built to withstand the rigors of October.
Here are the keys to getting there:
---
THE OTHER FRANCISCO
The Pirates' budget might be growing, but they still couldn't afford to keep catcher Russell Martin, who parlayed his tremendous 2014 into a $82 million deal with Toronto. Pittsburgh prepared for Martin's departure by trading for longtime Yankees' backup catcher Francisco Cervelli. When healthy Cervelli is an adequate defensive replacement with a decent if not powerful bat. If he can handle the pitching staff and control the basepaths, any offense he provides would be a plus.
---
SPEED TO BURN
Perennial MVP candidate McCutchen anchors one of baseball's most athletic outfields. Starling Marte surged toward the end of a bumpy 2014 and Gregory Polanco is a raw but talented work in progress. Pittsburgh felt confident enough in Polanco's progress to trade Travis Snider to Baltimore.
---
PEDRO'S PROGRESS
Pedro Alvarez moves across the infield to first base in hopes of salvaging his career after developing a serious case of the yips at third. If his can reclaim the groove that helped him mash 36 homers in 2013, the Pirates can live with whatever growing pains may come with the switch.
---
KANG SHOW
Kang (pronounced ''Gahng'') doesn't lack for confidence. He told reporters in Korea he believes he can supplant Mercer at shortstop. It may take longer than he thought after a sluggish spring training.
---
THE VANIMAL
Vance Worley, like Liriano, Burnett and the since departed Edinson Volquez, thrived under pitching coach Ray Searage's mentoring last spring. He was arguably Pittsburgh's best starter down the stretch and a strong spring gives him a leg up in the battle Jeff Locke for the fifth starter spot.

*Mets-Pirates Preview* ======================

By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer

New York (24-19) at Pittsburgh (19-22), 1:35 p.m. EDT

The New York Mets' starting pitching had been a strength all season, but the rotation has hit a slight bump against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Trying to avoid a three-game sweep, the Mets will somewhat modify that staff Sunday when they look for their first road win in seven tries.

Noah Syndergaard was outpitched by Gerrit Cole in Friday's 4-1 loss and Matt Harvey followed consecutive scoreless outings by getting tagged for a career-high seven runs in a career-low four innings in Saturday's 8-2 defeat. Andrew McCutchen hit his sixth home run of the season, Pedro Alvarez hit his eighth and Josh Harrison extended his hitting streak to 10.

The Mets' starters entered Saturday ranked third in the majors with a 3.43 ERA.

"It's just a pretty terrible outing," Harvey said.

Now they'll turn to Jonathan Niese (3-4, 3.72 ERA), coming off a dreadful start of his own, allowing a career high-tying eight runs and 11 hits in five-plus innings in Tuesday's 10-2 loss to St. Louis. He is 3-1 despite a 4.41 ERA in six starts against the Pirates (20-22) with the Mets winning five times.

Dillon Gee will also be in the mix, and his reintroduction to the roster Sunday likely marks the start of a six-man rotation. After suffering a groin strain on May 9 that landed him on the disabled list, Gee was replaced by Syndergaard, who earned his stay with three strong starts and a 3.63 ERA to begin his career.

The six-man rotation will allow the Mets (24-20) to more strategically manage the innings of Syndergaard, second-year pitcher Jacob deGrom and Harvey, coming off elbow surgery in 2014.

"We've got a lot of managing to do of workloads," manager Terry Collins told MLB's official website. "A lot of it. When you add Noah to deGrom to Harvey, there's a lot of maneuvering that needs to be done. ... We'll come up with a plan that's hopefully going to work for us all."

Pittsburgh will go with Francisco Liriano (1-4, 4.15), whose only previous outing against the Mets came two years ago.

Liriano has revitalized his career since joining Pittsburgh in 2013, but provided cause for concern Tuesday with his shortest outing as a Pirate. The left-hander allowed seven runs in two innings in an 8-5 loss to Minnesota.

"That start didn't work out well for him. He'll be back. He'll be better," manager Clint Hurdle said. "He's going to work. He's going to take ownership of it."

He takes the hill following dominant starts from Cole, who went 8 1-3 innings in the series opener, and A.J. Burnett, who lowered his ERA to 1.37 with one run allowed while striking out 10 in seven innings Saturday.

New York is 2 for 31 (.065) with runners in scoring position during its six-game road losing skid. Prior to this series, the Mets were swept in four games at the Chicago Cubs from May 11-14.

David Wright's return has been pushed back after the third baseman was shut down for at least another week because of a back problem. Wright, who hasn't played since mid-April, has been diagnosed with stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column. He will rest one week before being reassessed.

"It's just something that seems to be taking longer than we initially thought," Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said. "The way it was progressing, (doctors) thought it would be gone by now."
