| | | ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - Last October, the St. Louis Cardinals were sufficiently flush with arms that they carried rookie Shelby Miller and deposed closer Edward Mujica in ceremonial roles and made it to Game 6 of the World Series against Boston.
After leading major league rookies with 15 wins, Miller was limited to one postseason inning due to concerns about a heavy workload. Mujica was used only in mop-up duty after mid-September.
The National League champions are perhaps even deeper, across the board, entering opening day March 31 at Cincinnati. The team that tied for the major league high with 97 wins has a surplus of viable candidates.
''I think we have the potential to be great,'' said ace Adam Wainwright, who won 19 games and finished second in NL Cy Young balloting. ''We just have to go out there, not listen to the hype, and perform.''
The 32-year-old Wainwright qualifies as the grizzled leader of a rotation that could include three members coming off big rookie debuts. Michael Wacha was a postseason sensation and the NLCS MVP, Miller went wire-to-wire as the fifth starter and Carlos Martinez, who's had an impressive spring, moved into the setup role when fellow rookie Trevor Rosenthal took over as closer.
Wacha and Martinez are 22, Miller and Rosenthal just 23.
There's also 15-game winner Lance Lynn, who struck out 10 in four innings of his last spring training start, and lefty Jaime Garcia could fit into the mix sometime in April coming off shoulder surgery. And don't forget Joe Kelly, another rookie who won 10 games and was the rotation's strongest starter much of the second half.
And one of the National League's best lineups, too.
Much is expected from a loyal fan base that extends several states, and that's OK.
''Our expectations,'' Lynn said, ''are higher than theirs.''
| | PITTSBURGH: PITTSBURGH (AP) - The roars have faded. The giddiness of ending 21 years of futility and coming with a game of the National League championship series, too.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are in some ways just another NL contender these days. That dark cloud of two decades of losing is gone after a remarkable 94-68 surge and the playoff berth that came along with it in 2013.
Now the franchise needs to figure out what to do with the rest of its life. For three seasons a club that was a laughingstock when manager Clint Hurdle took over in December 2010 has slowly made inroads to relevance.
Suddenly, the ''World Series or bust'' attitude owner Bob Nutting has espoused for years doesn't seem so laughable anymore.
Press reigning NL Manager of the Year Clint Hurdle on what his team can possibly do for an encore despite a relatively quiet offseason and he responds with his usual eternal optimism.
''Excellence is verb, not a noun,'' Hurdle said. ''You're going to continue to push forward. Our goal is to win a sixth world championship. The fact is, we haven't won an LCS or a division series. We need to maintain our focus on the things we need to do.''

*Cardinals-Pirates Preview* ===========================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
St. Louis (70-59) at Pittsburgh (67-63), 7:05 p.m. EDT
Few pitchers have proven more difficult to take deep this season than Lance Lynn.
Considering much of the Pittsburgh Pirates' offense lately has come via the long ball, they could be in trouble Tuesday night against Lynn and the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park.
Lynn (14-8, 2.78 ERA) has gone 6-2 with a 1.73 ERA in nine starts since surrendering a season-high six earned runs in a 9-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 28. He's also won three straight outings after holding Cincinnati to four hits over seven scoreless innings in a 7-3 victory on Wednesday. Lynn appeared to be on track for his second complete game of the season but didn't come out for the eighth after a 58-minute rain delay.
The right-hander has allowed just three home runs in 128 2-3 innings over his last 21 starts and his 0.40 home runs allowed per nine innings is the second lowest rate in the NL behind teammate Adam Wainwright.
He split two meetings with Pittsburgh earlier this season, allowing two runs in 6 2-3 innings in a 5-2 home win on July 9 after giving up four runs in six innings of a 4-3 road loss on May 10.
St. Louis (71-59) opened the three-game series with a 3-2 victory Monday. Matt Holliday put the Cardinals ahead with a two-run, two-out single in the seventh. They had been shut out prior to Jon Jay's pinch-hit RBI single one at-bat earlier.
Meanwhile, John Lackey limited the Pirates to one run in seven innings.
"I think guys know when we have a pitcher like Lackey on the mound, he's going to keep us in the game," manager Mike Matheny said. "We've just got to keep fighting and figure out a way to get something going."
Holliday has eight RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak and 20 RBIs in his last 25 versus Pittsburgh. Jay has hit .465 over his last 15 games overall.
Pedro Alvarez and Andrew McCutchen drove in Pittsburgh's only runs with solo homers in the second and ninth innings, respectively. Nine home runs have accounted for 15 of the 23 runs over the last four games for the Pirates (67-64). McCutchen is responsible for three of those shots, however he's homerless against Lynn, going 4 for 29 with 11 strikeouts.
Gerrit Cole (7-4, 3.69) looks to build off a strong showing in his first start for Pittsburgh since being sidelined by a sore lat. Cole threw seven innings and gave up two runs in the Pirates' 3-2 win over Atlanta on Wednesday, though he left without a decision. The right-hander retired 12 straight at one point.
"He had four pitches to go to tonight, very efficient work," manager Clint Hurdle said. "Really good to see him out on the mound."
Facing the Cardinals should put Cole at ease considering his performances in two games against them this year. He gave up three runs in 14 innings, though he split the decisions.
Holliday and Matt Carpenter are a combined 8 for 13 against Cole compared to all other current Cardinals hitters going 6 for 40.
