| |  | NY METS: NEW YORK (AP) - Five straight losing seasons. That's what the New York Mets have produced since moving into Citi Field.
David Wright, for one, is tired of it.
''We need to start going out there showing results,'' the star third baseman said. ''The last couple years we've kind of been hampered by some contracts and payroll issues. It seems like that's behind us. At the same time, we've got those prospects knocking at the door. I think we're in a better place now than we have been the past few years and quite frankly, I think we have a better team.''
Translation: No more waiting for next year. No more selling the future. No more excuses.
It's time to take a step forward - and that means winning.
General manager Sandy Alderson seems to think so, too. After he signed free agents Curtis Granderson, Bartolo Colon and Chris Young this offseason, a report emerged that Alderson told staffers he thinks the Mets can win 90 games (with a payroll under $90 million).
Even hard-core fans found that overly optimistic, especially with ace Matt Harvey expected to miss the entire season following Tommy John surgery. New York posted its second consecutive 74-88 record last year - and that was with Harvey on the mound most of the way.
But there is reason for hope, particularly in Triple-A. Touted young pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero could soon join a promising rotation that includes Colon, Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee and Jonathon Niese.
''He's got all the traits of the good ones,'' manager Terry Collins said about Syndergaard. ''He's on track to be special.''
The offense could be better with the addition of Granderson, who got a $60 million, four-year deal after an injury-plagued season for the Yankees across town. His left-handed power bat should provide some much-needed protection for Wright.
The multitalented Young, on a one-year contract following a down season in Oakland, appears highly motivated to regain his All-Star form.
''It's been interesting to watch the whole team,'' Granderson said early in spring training. ''There's power here. Chris Young has been amazing.''
The lineup remains flawed and prone to strikeouts, though the roster has improved. Perhaps not enough to push Washington and Atlanta in the NL East just yet, but the Mets expect to take significant strides this season as they anticipate Harvey's return in 2015.
''When I re-signed here, I knew it wasn't an overnight fix. I think I like that part of the challenge of it,'' Wright said. ''I want to be part of the reason why we get this thing turned around and headed in the right direction and ultimately start winning again. I think we have that ability.''
| | PITTSBURGH: PITTSBURGH (AP) - The roars have faded. The giddiness of ending 21 years of futility and coming with a game of the National League championship series, too.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are in some ways just another NL contender these days. That dark cloud of two decades of losing is gone after a remarkable 94-68 surge and the playoff berth that came along with it in 2013.
Now the franchise needs to figure out what to do with the rest of its life. For three seasons a club that was a laughingstock when manager Clint Hurdle took over in December 2010 has slowly made inroads to relevance.
Suddenly, the ''World Series or bust'' attitude owner Bob Nutting has espoused for years doesn't seem so laughable anymore.
Press reigning NL Manager of the Year Clint Hurdle on what his team can possibly do for an encore despite a relatively quiet offseason and he responds with his usual eternal optimism.
''Excellence is verb, not a noun,'' Hurdle said. ''You're going to continue to push forward. Our goal is to win a sixth world championship. The fact is, we haven't won an LCS or a division series. We need to maintain our focus on the things we need to do.''

When Francisco Liriano and Gerrit Cole went down with injuries earlier this month, the already unreliable Pittsburgh Pirates' rotation was left with few appealing options.
Improbably, the patchwork starting staff has turned into an area of strength.
Vance Worley might be the biggest surprise of the bunch, and he'll try to deliver his third straight stellar start - and make a case for staying in the revamped rotation - Thursday night when the Pirates kick off a four-game home set against the New York Mets.
Cole had yet to take a step forward from his impressive rookie season before hitting the disabled list June 8 and Liriano took a serious step back from his outstanding 2013 before joining Cole three days later, but their absences still seemed to leave the Pirates' rotation in turmoil.
Pittsburgh (39-39) had a major league-low nine wins from its starters through May and a 4.55 ERA that was second-worst in the NL, but the rotation has turned a corner despite its injuries. The Pirates posted just 23 quality starts through their first 60 games, but they've had 14 in their last 18 after Charlie Morton bounced back from a three-run first to hold Tampa Bay scoreless over his final six innings in Wednesday's 5-1 loss.
Two of those have come from Worley (1-0, 1.98 ERA), who threw seven scoreless innings at Miami on June 15 and held the Cubs to three runs over 6 2-3 in Saturday's 5-3 victory. Combining his two major league starts with his seven in Triple-A this season, the right-hander has struck out 52 and walked five in 58 2-3 innings.
Yet with Cole returning Saturday, Worley - who posted a 7.21 ERA in 10 starts for Minnesota last season - may not stick in the rotation.
"The fact that he was able to clean up some things - revisit, I think, the delivery, the mindset from when he was having success. To feel that again, and then just start over," manager Clint Hurdle told MLB's official website. "Start with a new organization, clean chalkboard."
Worley, who spent his first three years with Philadelphia, hasn't had a lot of luck against the Mets (36-42). He has a 6.87 ERA in eight starts, the most recent of which - a one-plus inning, nine-run disaster April 12, 2013, with the Twins - was the worst of his career.
Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy is 12 for 17 with two walks against Worley.
New York's offense put up 25 runs during its sixth three-game winning streak of the season heading into Thursday, but for a sixth time it failed to extend a streak to four. Oakland scored six times in the first two innings off Zack Wheeler and went on to win 8-5 - a rare misstep from a rotation that had posted a 1.64 ERA over the past seven games.
The Mets will try to bounce back as Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-1, 2.68) faces the Pirates for the first time. The right-hander, who will be making his sixth start, was solid in his latest outing, limiting the Marlins to just a first-inning run and making it through 5 1-3 in Saturday's 3-2 loss.
"I knew that was the only run I could give up," Matsuzaka said. "So I had that in mind the rest of my outing."
Matsuzaka should have Juan Lagares behind him in this contest as the center fielder comes off the DL after a ribcage injury that's kept him out since June 1.
The Pirates again may be without left fielder Starling Marte, who passed a concussion test after a collision at second base Tuesday night but has a stiff right middle finger that's limiting his ability to throw.
