| | | SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''
| | PITTSBURGH: PITTSBURGH (AP) - The roars have faded. The giddiness of ending 21 years of futility and coming with a game of the National League championship series, too.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are in some ways just another NL contender these days. That dark cloud of two decades of losing is gone after a remarkable 94-68 surge and the playoff berth that came along with it in 2013.
Now the franchise needs to figure out what to do with the rest of its life. For three seasons a club that was a laughingstock when manager Clint Hurdle took over in December 2010 has slowly made inroads to relevance.
Suddenly, the ''World Series or bust'' attitude owner Bob Nutting has espoused for years doesn't seem so laughable anymore.
Press reigning NL Manager of the Year Clint Hurdle on what his team can possibly do for an encore despite a relatively quiet offseason and he responds with his usual eternal optimism.
''Excellence is verb, not a noun,'' Hurdle said. ''You're going to continue to push forward. Our goal is to win a sixth world championship. The fact is, we haven't won an LCS or a division series. We need to maintain our focus on the things we need to do.''

(UPDATES with Cain out, Petit to start)
*Giants-Pirates Preview* ========================
By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer
San Francisco (20-11) at Pittsburgh (12-19), 7:05 p.m. EDT
After a sandwich-cutting mishap, the San Francisco Giants' Matt Cain won't be getting back on the mound Monday night as he hoped.
After reversing an earlier decision to start the right-hander against the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco is scheduled to go with Yusmeiro Petit to begin this three-game series at PNC Park.
Cain was set to take the hill for the first time in almost two weeks after being scratched Tuesday with a cut on the tip of his right index finger, which he suffered while attempting to pick up a knife. The Giants, though, scuttled those plans Sunday night and placed Cain on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 24.
"It's on the forefinger about half an inch, but it's in a bad spot there," manager Bruce Bochy said.
Cain has been superb against Pittsburgh of late, going 3-0 with a 1.72 ERA during a seven-start stretch in the series, but San Francisco has reason to be confident with Petit taking the ball after a strong performance in Cain's place Tuesday. The right-hander gave up three hits and struck out four with no walks in six innings of a 6-0 victory over San Diego, his first start since Sept. 28.
Petit also dominated the Pirates in a 6-0 win in his last start against them, giving up one hit in eight innings at Pittsburgh on Aug. 4, 2009.
The Pirates' Jeff Locke is expected to be recalled for a spot start following Thursday's doubleheader. The left-hander made the All-Star team last year before struggling down the stretch, finishing 10-7 with a 3.52 ERA.
Locke went 1-5 with a 6.66 ERA over his final 11 starts and was left off the postseason roster.
"He's certainly had his share (of challenges) since the second half of last season," manager Clint Hurdle told the Pirates' official website. "This is a great opportunity for him to embrace what he has and to keep focused on where he wants to go, and how to get there."
Locke was 0-2 with a 5.04 ERA in five starts with Triple-A Indianapolis. He allowed three runs, five hits and four walks in four innings of a 10-5 loss at San Francisco on Aug. 22 in his only career start against the Giants.
Locke will try to shut down a San Francisco club that's won five straight and nine of 10. The Giants (20-11) opened a 10-game trip with a three-game sweep of Atlanta - their first road sweep in the series since 1988.
Brandon Crawford did most of the damage with a pair of homers in Sunday's 4-1 win, and Madison Bumgarner threw six strong innings. The Giants' rotation has allowed four earned runs during the winning streak while the bullpen has thrown 12 1-3 scoreless innings.
"That's incredible," Bochy said. "What a job our pitching did here."
The Pirates had lost 15 of 19 before posting back-to-back wins over Toronto, but their struggles resumed in a 7-2 defeat Sunday. Pittsburgh, which managed four hits, has dropped 13 straight when scoring three or fewer runs.
