PREVIEW
Phillies, Arrieta look for another win vs. Mets

The Philadelphia Phillies will look for their second consecutive victory when they host the New York Mets in the second game of a four-game series on Tuesday.

The Phillies had dropped seven straight and 16 of 22 before pounding out a season-high 19 hits in a 13-7 win over the Mets on Monday.

Jean Segura had four of the 19 hits while Cesar Hernandez, Maikel Franco and Scott Kingery added three hits apiece. Segura and Franco also hit two of the Phillies' four home runs.

"We're confident, and this lets you know how good this team can be," Segura told reporters after the game. "Every team goes through tough stretches."

Before this series, the Phillies were swept at home by the Miami Marlins for the first time since the 2009 season.

Rhys Hoskins and Jay Bruce also homered for the Phillies in the 13-run outburst. The Phillies managed only 12 runs total in the last five games.

"We have the right personnel in the room," Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said. "We're continuing to refine and work on our processes and our practices. Those have to get better always. So the work we do today has to improve and continue to improve."

The Phillies will hand the ball to Jake Arrieta (6-6, 4.12 ERA), who is 3-5 with a 4.95 ERA over his last 11 games dating to April 22 -- despite coming off consecutive quality starts for the first time since late May.

In Arrieta's last start Wednesday at Washington, he gave up two hits and one run in six innings.

The Mets will attempt to halt a two-game skid and will send Walker Lockett to the mound for his second start. Lockett was called up from Triple-A Syracuse last week to fill in for the injured Noah Syndergaard.

Last Monday against the Cubs in Chicago, Lockett gave up five hits and six runs in only 2 1/3 innings, taking the loss. He enters Tuesday with a 23.14 ERA.

"The balls started getting up a tad, a couple inches and they barreled them up," Mets manager Mickey Callaway told reporters of Lockett's last start. "It happened fast. I thought he was cruising and looking great until that point."

First baseman Pete Alonso stayed red hot for the Mets by going 2-for-3 on Monday, raising his average to .280.

Alonso was named National League Player of the Week on Monday after hitting .427 with seven runs scored, three doubles, four home runs and eight RBIs last week.

Alonso improved his home run total to 27 on Sunday, breaking Darryl Strawberry's Mets single-season rookie record set in 1983. Alonso also has 61 RBIs.

It's possible that Alonso could break the major league rookie record of most home runs by July 1 -- Oakland's Mark McGwire hit 28 in 1987.

Despite losing by six runs, the Mets still managed to hit four home runs Monday -- one each by Wilson Ramos, Dominic Smith, Michael Conforto and Todd Frazier.
