Manager: A.J. Hinch (third season)
Who's new? RF Josh Reddick, CF Carlos Beltran, LF Nori Aoki, C Brian McCann, RHP Charlie Morton
Who's gone? C Jason Castro, INF Luis Valbuena, OF Colby Rasmus, RHP Doug Fister
Projected lineup: CF George Springer (.261, 29 HR, 82 RBI), 2B Jose Altuve (.338, 24, 96, 30 SB), SS Carlos Correa (.274, 20, 96, 13 SB), DH Carlos Beltran (.295, 29, 93 with Yankees and Rangers), C Brian McCann (.242, 20, 58 with Yankees) or Evan Gattis (.251, 32, 72), 3B Alex Bregman (.264, 8, 34 in 49 games), RF Josh Reddick (.281, 10, 37 with A's and Dodgers), 1B Yulieski Gurriel (.262, 3, 15), LF Nori Aoki (.283, 4, 28 with Mariners)
Rotation: LH Dallas Keuchel (9-12, 4.55 ERA), RH Collin McHugh (13-10, 4.34), RH Mike Fiers (11-8, 4.48), RH Lance McCullers (6-5, 3.22), RH Charlie Morton (1-1, 4.15 in four games with Phillies)
Key relievers: RH Ken Giles (2-5, 4.11, 15/20 SV), RH Luke Gregerson (4-3, 3.28, 15/21 SV), RH Will Harris (1-2, 2.25, 12/15 SV), RH Chris Devenski (4-4, 2.16), LH Tony Sipp (1-2, 4.95), RH Michael Feliz (8-1, 4.43)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and catcher. Hamstring issues limited 33-year-old Morton to four starts with the Phillies last season. That didn't stop the Astros from signing him to a two-year contract worth at least $14 million. Now, veteran Fiers and 24-year-old Joe Musgrove are on the bubble for the fifth starter's job. McCann and Gattis give the Astros a pair of veteran catchers with slugging potential. McCann has fewer weaknesses behind the plate; Gattis is the better all-around hitter. With Beltran aboard as the primary designated hitter, McCann and Gattis won't both be in the lineup on most nights.
Outlook: After slipping to third place in the AL West last year, the Astros' front office decided to double down on dingers rather than upgrade a rotation that lacks a true ace. The result: A lineup with eight potential 20-home run hitters, including possible MVP candidates in Altuve and Correa. Everyone returns from an impressive young bullpen with high strikeout potential. If the Astros are in contention by the trade deadline, the front office should have the financial flexibility to add a front-line starter. Then again, if Dallas Keuchel looks like the pitcher who won a Cy Young Award in 2015, Houston might not have a problem. | | PHILADELPHIA: 2016: 71-91, fourth place
Manager: Pete Mackanin (third season)
Who's new? LF Howie Kendrick, RF Michael Saunders, C Ryan Hanigan, OF Chris Coghlan, RHP Clay Buchholz, RHP Joaquin Benoit
Who's gone? C A.J. Ellis, 1B Ryan Howard, INF Andres Blanco, OF Peter Bourjos, RHP Charlie Morton, RHP David Hernandez
Projected lineup: 2B Cesar Hernandez (.294, 6 HR, 39 RBI, 17 SB), LF Howie Kendrick (.255, 8, 40, 10 with Dodgers), CF Odubel Herrera (.286, 15, 49, 25), 3B Maikel Franco (.255, 25, 88), RF Michael Saunders (.253, 24, 57 with Blue Jays), 1B Tommy Joseph (.257, 21, 47), C Cameron Rupp (.252, 16, 54), SS Freddy Galvis (.241, 3, 20, 17 SB)
Rotation: RH Jeremy Hellickson (11-14, 3.65 ERA), RH Aaron Nola (6-9, 4.78), RH Clay Buchholz (8-10, 4.78 with Red Sox), RH Vince Velasquez (8-6, 4.12), Jerad Eickhoff (11-14, 3.65)
Key relievers: Jeanmar Gomez (3-5, 4.85, 37/43 SV), Joaquin Benoit (2-0, 0.38 with Blue Jays), Hector Neris (4-4, 2.58), Pat Neshek (2-2, 3.06 with Astros), Edubray Ramos (1-3, 3.83)
Hot spots: Shortstop and closer. Philadelphia is waiting for the arrival of J.P. Crawford, the marquee name in the farm system. Crawford struggled in his first exposure to Triple-A last year, batting .250 with seven home runs in 123 games. In the meantime shortstop belongs to Galvis, who had an MLB-worst .274 on-base percentage last season. Crawford will get a chance once he's deemed ready. Gomez had a 19.13 ERA last September, possibly opening the door for Ramos, Neris or newcomer Benoit to seize the closer's job in spring training.
Outlook: On the long road back to respectability, the Phillies appear closer to the end than the beginning. Young starters Nola, Velasquez and Eickhoff showed flashes of brilliance last year. So did center fielder Herrera, who was rewarded with a five-year contract extension. He's the only player on the roster with a guaranteed contract beyond this year. That points to 2017 as a major transition year with prospects and veterans auditioning for jobs in 2018 and beyond, when the Phillies can be active in free agency. |
| | Astros' Morton returns to Philly to face former team
PHILADELPHIA -- Charlie Morton's last at-bat was certainly one to forget. The Houston Astros right-hander takes the mound Tuesday night in Philadelphia against a Phillies club he started for four times in April 2016 before a hamstring injury knocked him out the remainder of the season. His first at-bat in Citizens Bank Park will be his first overall since tearing a muscle running to first base on a bunt attempt on April 23, 2016. That wasn't Morton's first or last trip to the DL. He also missed half of the 2012 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery and missed time in both 2014 and 2015 with hip inflammation. This year, Morton was out six weeks because of a lat strain. "No more worried (about batting) than I am pitching," he told the Houston Chronicle. "I've gotten hurt pitching way more than I've gotten hurt running." He has faced the Phillies five times in his career but hasn't generally pitched well, going 1-3 with an 8.22 ERA. This will be his first time going up against the club since 2011, when he gave up eight runs (six earned) in four innings of a 10-3 loss while he was still with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his first season in Houston, Morton is 7-4 with a 4.18 ERA. In three starts since returning to the rotation after missing the entire month of June, he is 2-1 with a 4.58 ERA. The Phillies' Tuesday starter, rookie Nick Pivetta (3-5, 5.58 ERA), has struggled mightily with his consistency. He gave up three runs or fewer in three of his past four starts. His last time out, Pivetta allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings to beat the Marlins. The one time he got blasted recently, he gave up eight runs in the second inning alone (nine total) in a loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on July 14. "We've seen that with him before," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin told CSNPhilly.com. "He's pitched well, lost it for a while and got it back. Part of pitching up here is to realize what you need to do next." Pivetta will start against the Astros for the first time in his career. He must deal with a Houston offense that is putting up some serious numbers this season, including a 13-4 win in the series opener Monday night, a game that stretched into Tuesday morning thanks to a two-hour rain delay in the fourth inning. The Astros (66-33) are led by second baseman Jose Altuve, who went 4-for-4 on Monday to raise his July batting average to .507 (38-for-75) and his season average to .365, tops in the major leagues. "This guy continues to be amazing," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "I don't know how else to describe him." The scoring outburst was the sixth time this month the Astros have produced at least 10 runs in a game. They scored as many as 19 just before the All-Star break in a win over the Toronto Blue Jays. "This is as good a team as we've seen," Mackanin said after the Monday night game. "They're very aggressive hitters, and you can't make mistakes." |
