KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON: WASHINGTON (AP) - Thanks in part to No. 1 overall draft picks Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, the 2012 Washington Nationals were considered an up-and-coming team, perhaps a year or two away from contending.
So what did they do? Went out and led the majors with 98 wins.
Thanks to that quick rise, the 2013 Nationals became a popular pick to go to the World Series. So what did they do? Stumbled at the start and missed out on the playoffs.
Now here come the 2014 Nationals, featuring largely the same roster - including Strasburg on the mound, and Harper in left field, both feeling good after offseason surgery - and with rookie manager Matt Williams replacing Davey Johnson, he of the ''World Series or bust'' proclamation.
One key difference: The club knows what it's like to experience a truly disappointing, worse-than-they-were-supposed-to-be season for the first time since moving from Montreal in 2005.
''We got ahead of ourselves a little bit. My take on it was always: Last year in spring training, we had expectations on ourselves, really, for the first time, and we thought we were better, maybe, than we were,'' reliever Tyler Clippard said. ''We came into the season expecting to win, which is a good thing. But at the same time, we might not have went out there and earned it, like we should have.''
Yes, the team that got Strasburg and Harper thanks to consecutive 100-loss seasons is trying to deal with lofty goals.
''To see the organization from basically, literally, the ground up, improve is something I kind of take pride in, because when I signed, people would be like, `Oh, you play for the Expos and the Nationals,' and they'd be like, `Uh, OK, I don't know them,''' said shortstop Ian Desmond, drafted by Montreal in 2004. ''And now, it's like there's some pride behind playing for the Washington Nationals.''
PHILADELPHIA: PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard and his teammates have heard critics say the window has closed for the Philadelphia Phillies.
They just don't believe it.
After a dominant run that included five straight NL East titles, two pennants and the 2008 World Series championship, the Phillies have missed the postseason two consecutive years. They have an aging core of players who've been declining.
Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Ruiz are the remaining regulars from the group that led Philadelphia to its best era of baseball from 2007-11 under former manager Charlie Manuel.
They're determined to make another run.
''We've had a bad couple years and had injuries and all that stuff, but I don't think it's over,'' Howard said. ''People are entitled to their opinions and that's fine, but it's up to us to go out there and show them otherwise and go out and play our game and do what we do.''
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. refused to start the rebuilding process after the Phillies' first losing season since 2002. Instead, he re-signed Utley and Ruiz and added veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd and right-hander A.J. Burnett in free agency.
If the older players live up to their hefty contracts and younger guys like 2013 All-Star Domonic Brown, Cody Asche and Ben Revere continue to develop, the Phillies should be in contention.
''I think we're positive. We're expecting to win and plan on doing everything we can to ensure that,'' ace lefty Cliff Lee said.

*Nationals-Phillies Preview* ============================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

Washington (75-55) at Philadelphia (59-72), 7:05 p.m. EDT

The NL East-leading Washington Nationals have cooled off in Philadelphia.

Looking to avoid their longest losing streak in two months, the Nationals try to salvage Wednesday night's series finale against the last-place Phillies.

Washington (75-56) had won 12 of 13 before dropping the first two in this series. Freddy Galvis and Darin Ruf homered and Carlos Ruiz drove in the go-ahead run with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly as Philadelphia won 4-3 on Tuesday.

The Nationals' last three-game skid came June 25-27. Washington, 2-4 in its last six against the Phillies, hasn't been swept by Philadelphia since Aug. 24-26, 2012, at Citizens Bank Park.

The Nationals will try to bounce back behind Doug Fister (12-4, 2.38 ERA), who had yielded two runs or fewer in seven consecutive starts before allowing four in six innings of Friday's 10-3 loss to San Francisco.

"I wasn't sharp. I left too many balls over the plate," the right-hander told MLB's official website. "The whole day, I'm battling myself. It's a constant challenge for me to constantly keep the ball down and on the corners. It's something I have to do. If not, I have to pay for it."

Fister is 2-1 with a 1.64 ERA in three starts against the Phillies after losing 2-1 on Aug. 1. Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley are 1 for 8 in their matchups while Ryan Howard is 0 for 6.

Utley and Howard figure to be back in the lineup after sitting out against left-hander Gio Gonzalez on Tuesday. Howard is 1 for his last 32 with 13 strikeouts versus Washington.

The Phillies (60-72) have won three straight and five of six thanks to a 2.68 ERA. They now turn to Kyle Kendrick (6-11, 4.93), who owns an NL-worst 6.10 ERA since June 22.

The right-hander gave up three of his four runs in the first inning before settling in during Friday's 5-4 victory over St. Louis.

Kendrick, who snapped a four-start winless drought, has a 9.69 ERA in the first inning. Opponents are hitting .303 against him the first time through the lineup compared to .267 the rest of the way.

"It's not in my head at all; it's really not. I don't know. It's one of those things this year," he said. "You just have to battle. I'm a competitor. I don't want to lose, so I just had to keep battling. That's all you can do. Keep making pitches, keep grinding and try to keep your team in the game."

Kendrick is 5-10 with a 5.00 ERA against the Nationals, his most losses versus any team. He's posted an 8.02 ERA in losing his last four matchups.

Ian Desmond is 15 for 39 with five extra-base hits when facing Kendrick and Wilson Ramos is 6 for 11 with two homers.

Nationals leadoff man Denard Span is batting .200 in 16 games at Citizens Bank Park since the start of last year after going 0 for 8 in the last two. He's 5 for 23 against Kendrick.
