| |  | CHI WHITE SOX: HITTING: The departure of Juan Pierre opens things up for SS ALEXEI RAMIREZ to hit leadoff. 2B GORDON BECKHAM will get a fresh start, but his leash is shortening. 1B PAUL KONERKO faded last year. He's potential trade bait for the rebuilding Sox. Did DH ADAM DUNN need a year to adjust to A.L. pitching and DHing? With his contract, the Sox will have to find out. OF ALEJANDRO DE AZA's late-season surge probably wasn't for real, but it was enough to get him the inside track on a starting job with Carlos Quentin having been dealt to the Padres on New Year's Eve. OF ALEX RIOS has bounced back before, but at his age the odds are longer now. The organization believes in OF DAYAN VICIEDO. His improving approach and power fit well in U.S. Cellular, but he could platoon with KOSUKE FUKUDOME in left field. C A.J. PIERZYNSKI has motivation for one more solid season as free agency looms. 3B BRENT MOREL is good glove, but has a limited stick. OF/1B BRENT LILLIBRIDGE has an improving bat and can play just about anywhere.
STARTING PITCHING: JOHN DANKS doesn't look like a true No. 1 starter, but he keeps consistently throwing strikes and has some swing-and-miss stuff. Maybe it's because he's fallen short of his once-elite prospect status, but GAVIN FLOYD seems to get no respect as a quality middle-of-the-rotation arm. He was especially good after adding a cutter/slider-type pitch last year. JAKE PEAVY isn't going to win another Cy Young, but unlike last year, his shoulder should be close to 100 percent. The big question will again be whether, as a flyball pitcher, he can keep the ball in the park at cozy U.S. Cellular. PHILIP HUMBER was a nice surprise in 2011, but don't be fooled. It wasn't a former top prospect finally figuring it out. It was a back-of-the-rotation arm getting some good breaks. CHRIS SALE will make the move to the rotation. He'll likely be on some pitch counts, but this is an exciting development. With his stuff (he already has a solid changeup to go with his fastball/slider combo) he has monster upside.
RELIEF PITCHING: With closer Sergio Santos shipped off to Toronto, youngster ADDISON REED figures to be the top candidate to close games. Any young closer is a risk, but Reed's fastball/slider combo has been dominant over two pro seasons. Lefty MATT THORNTON might have blown his chance to claim the closer role last year. He had regained his form as a top set-up man late in the year, but if Reed falters he might be no more than a committee guy. JESSE CRAIN chased strikeouts more aggressively last year, but he also issued more walks. He may miss the first couple weeks of the season with an oblique injury. | | PHILADELPHIA: HITTING: This Phillies lineup had another subpar season, finishing 18th in the majors in homers (153) and 13th in runs (4.4 per game). The team re-signed free-agent SS JIMMY ROLLINS, especially because light-hitting WILSON VALDEZ is his backup. Raul Ibanez has left town, which allows OF JOHN MAYBERRY JR. to display his power on a daily basis. He had 15 HR in 267 at-bats last year. 1B RYAN HOWARD will not be ready for Opening Day after Achilles surgery in October, and will be replaced by a platoon of newcomers, JIM THOME and TY WIGGINTON. 2B CHASE UTLEY continues to be bothered by tendinitis in his knee, which has caused his numbers to drop significantly in the past two years. He will not be ready for Opening Day and no timetable has been set for his return. Veterans OF SHANE VICTORINO and C CARLOS RUIZ are both coming off typical productive seasons. OF HUNTER PENCE batted .324 with 11 HR after his trade from Houston and is poised for a huge 2012 campaign at age 28. 3B PLACIDO POLANCO is coming off his third Gold Glove season at the hot corner, but his .277 BA in 2011 was his lowest mark since 1999. Stud prospect OF DOMONIC BROWN is expected to begin the season in Triple-A.
STARTING PITCHING: ROY HALLADAY won the Cy Young Award in 2010 in his first year in Philadelphia, but he was even better in 2011, posting a career-best 2.35 ERA and also reaching a personal best with 220 strikeouts. CLIFF LEE was also outstanding in his first full season in a Phillies uniform, tallying six shutouts, which included a stretch of three straight blankings midway through the year. He wasn't afraid to pitch in Citizens Bank Park, going 11-3 with a 1.94 ERA at his new home. Like Halladay and Lee, COLE HAMELS also notched a career-best ERA (2.79) and held batters to a .214 average. Although he has the stigma of being oft-injured, Hamels was able to start 30+ games for the fourth straight season. VANCE WORLEY was impressive once he was inserted into the rotation, going 11-3 with a 3.02 ERA as a starter and fanning 73 over 74.2 innings of his final dozen starts. JOE BLANTON rounds out the rotation, but he could be limited a bit after an elbow injury cost him much of the 2011 season.
RELIEF PITCHING: Not willing to shell out the big money for inconsistent and oft-injured closer Brad Lidge, the Phillies decided to spend their dough on JONATHAN PAPELBON instead. The former Red Sox closer was 31-of-34 in save chances last year with a career-high 87 strikeouts and just 10 walks. With the departure of free agent Ryan Madson, ANTONIO BASTARDO assumes eighth-inning duties. The southpaw allowed a microscopic .144 opponents' BA, won six games and saved eight others last season. JOSE CONTERAS (age 40) returns for his seventh-inning duty and appears healthy enough to pitch following last year's season-ending elbow surgery. He is 9-of-10 in save chances since 2010. |

Cole Hamels is a three-time All-Star, and he's finally starting to pitch like one again.
Hamels attempts to win a third straight start and help the Philadelphia Phillies head into the break with a .500 record by beating the last-place Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
Hamels (4-11, 4.17 ERA) set career highs with 17 wins and 216 strikeouts last year, but he's failed to build on that in 2013. The left-hander has already tied his career high in losses, set in 2009 and matched the following year.
Recently, he's looked more like the pitcher that's recorded double-digit victories each of the last six seasons. He's won back-to-back starts, yielding two earned runs and 11 hits over 15 innings while walking one and striking out 12.
Hamels had perhaps his best outing of the season Tuesday, allowing one run and pitching out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam to complete the eighth inning in a 4-2 win over Washington.
Getting consistency from Hamels would give the Phillies (47-48) a strong 1-2 punch in the rotation with All-Star Cliff Lee. It may also re-establish them as a viable contender in the NL East.
"That would mean that we definitely have a chance to win two games in a series," Charlie Manuel told the team's official website. "That's what that means. And I'd get my regular sleep."
Hamels earned a 7-3 win in his only career meeting with the White Sox (37-54) on June 12, 2007.
Michael Young's two-out, walkoff single gave the Phillies a 2-1 win over Chicago on Saturday after dropping the opener of the doubleheader 5-4.
Young had four hits in the twin bill, and he's batting .400 with four doubles and six RBIs over the past eight games. However, he's 0 for 3 versus Jose Quintana, the White Sox's scheduled starter.
Young's production may be even more important after center fielder Ben Revere broke his right foot on a foul ball before grounding into a double play to end the first game Saturday.
Revere has a .431 average over his last 15 games, managing at least one hit in 14 of them.
"It's tough," Manuel said. "I couldn't believe it."
The White Sox look to head into the break with four wins in six games, and Gordon Beckham's hot bat could help them achieve that.
He's hitting .396 over the past 12 games, despite going 0 for 5 in Saturday's nightcap. He had a single, triple and scored a run in the opener of this three-game series.
Quintana (4-2, 3.67) is trying to win back-to-back starts for the first time since April.
The left-hander, who is facing the Phillies for the first time, allowed three runs and two homers over a season-high eight innings of Tuesday's 11-4 win at Detroit. He hadn't won on the road since April 17 at Toronto.
Quintana is 1-1 with a 1.65 ERA in four career interleague starts. However, that defeat came May 27 against the Cubs, who reached him for four runs in six innings of a 7-0 win.
