| |  | KANSAS CITY: HITTING: With Melky Cabrera gone, OF LORENZO CAIN will get first crack at leadoff and centerfield. If he falters, speedster JASON BOURGEOIS, vet MITCH MAIER and prospect WIL MYERS are waiting. Former Brewer YUNIESKY BETANCOURT will start at 2B and has good life in his bat for a middle infielder. OF ALEX GORDON may not hit for average, but his approach and power are there. DH BILLY BUTLER is rock solid, but it's fair to wonder whether his power will ever progress. 1B ERIC HOSMER has MVP-type upside, and he's on the verge of figuring out MLB pitching. OF JEFF FRANCOEUR still chases too many bad pitches, but the organization likes him and he still has some pop and speed. 3B MIKE MOUSTAKAS is too good for the minors, but he still hasn't caught up to major-league pitching. There's a good chance he finds his groove this year. C HUMBERTO QUINTERO will be the main backstop with BRAYAN PENA backing him up. Speedy SS ALCIDES ESCOBAR's bat hasn't caught up to his glove.
STARTING PITCHING: K.C. once again hopes this is the year LUKE HOCHEVAR puts it all together. His velocity picked up late last year, allowing him to be more than a groundball guy. Lefty BRUCE CHEN's late-career renaissance continues. He'll be a reliable veteran arm in the middle of K.C.'s rotation again. FELIPE PAULINO has the biggest upside in this rotation. He's always had one of MLB's best fastballs. His problem was that, when he missed (which has been often), it was usually belt-high and over the middle of the plate. If he hits his spots as he did late last year, he's got potential. But Paulino will start the season on the DL with a sore elbow. The Royals hope to solve JONATHAN SANCHEZ's command issues. The lefty is a risk, but has legitimate No. 3 potential. Top prospect DANNY DUFFY will get every chance to pitch his way into the Opening Day rotation.
RELIEF PITCHING: JOAKIM SORIA is out for the season with Tommy John surgery, leaving GREG HOLLAND to pick up closer duties. Holland was the Royals' best bullpen arm in 2011 and his stuff has always been nearly unhittable. It's just a matter of whether last year's vastly improved walk rate was for real. JONATHAN BROXTON was a disaster last season, but he'll be given every chance to become the No. 2 guy in this bullpen because of his experience in Los Angeles. AARON CROW was a first-round pick (twice) for his college career as a starter, but wore down late last year, and walked too many batters. | | PHILADELPHIA: HITTING: This Phillies lineup had another subpar season, finishing 18th in the majors in homers (153) and 13th in runs (4.4 per game). The team re-signed free-agent SS JIMMY ROLLINS, especially because light-hitting WILSON VALDEZ is his backup. Raul Ibanez has left town, which allows OF JOHN MAYBERRY JR. to display his power on a daily basis. He had 15 HR in 267 at-bats last year. 1B RYAN HOWARD will not be ready for Opening Day after Achilles surgery in October, and will be replaced by a platoon of newcomers, JIM THOME and TY WIGGINTON. 2B CHASE UTLEY continues to be bothered by tendinitis in his knee, which has caused his numbers to drop significantly in the past two years. He will not be ready for Opening Day and no timetable has been set for his return. Veterans OF SHANE VICTORINO and C CARLOS RUIZ are both coming off typical productive seasons. OF HUNTER PENCE batted .324 with 11 HR after his trade from Houston and is poised for a huge 2012 campaign at age 28. 3B PLACIDO POLANCO is coming off his third Gold Glove season at the hot corner, but his .277 BA in 2011 was his lowest mark since 1999. Stud prospect OF DOMONIC BROWN is expected to begin the season in Triple-A.
STARTING PITCHING: ROY HALLADAY won the Cy Young Award in 2010 in his first year in Philadelphia, but he was even better in 2011, posting a career-best 2.35 ERA and also reaching a personal best with 220 strikeouts. CLIFF LEE was also outstanding in his first full season in a Phillies uniform, tallying six shutouts, which included a stretch of three straight blankings midway through the year. He wasn't afraid to pitch in Citizens Bank Park, going 11-3 with a 1.94 ERA at his new home. Like Halladay and Lee, COLE HAMELS also notched a career-best ERA (2.79) and held batters to a .214 average. Although he has the stigma of being oft-injured, Hamels was able to start 30+ games for the fourth straight season. VANCE WORLEY was impressive once he was inserted into the rotation, going 11-3 with a 3.02 ERA as a starter and fanning 73 over 74.2 innings of his final dozen starts. JOE BLANTON rounds out the rotation, but he could be limited a bit after an elbow injury cost him much of the 2011 season.
RELIEF PITCHING: Not willing to shell out the big money for inconsistent and oft-injured closer Brad Lidge, the Phillies decided to spend their dough on JONATHAN PAPELBON instead. The former Red Sox closer was 31-of-34 in save chances last year with a career-high 87 strikeouts and just 10 walks. With the departure of free agent Ryan Madson, ANTONIO BASTARDO assumes eighth-inning duties. The southpaw allowed a microscopic .144 opponents' BA, won six games and saved eight others last season. JOSE CONTERAS (age 40) returns for his seventh-inning duty and appears healthy enough to pitch following last year's season-ending elbow surgery. He is 9-of-10 in save chances since 2010. |

When John Lannan takes the mound at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday night, he may breathe a sigh of relief knowing that his opponent will not be the Philadelphia Phillies.
After spending his first six major league seasons getting roughed up by Philadelphia while pitching for the NL East rival Washington Nationals, Lannan makes his Phillies debut against the visiting Kansas City Royals.
Lannan went 42-52 with a 4.01 ERA in 134 starts for Washington, but he was 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA in six appearances in 2012 while spending most of his time at Triple-A Syracuse. The Nationals failed to tender him a contract, and the Phillies signed the left-hander to a one-year, $2.5 million deal Dec. 19.
"It's a great opportunity," Lannan said. "I feel like the Phillies have a great shot of winning the NL East and going to the World Series."
Lannan is surely happy about not having to face Philadelphia anymore. He went 3-13 with a 5.53 ERA in 19 matchups, posting a 2-5 record and 6.49 ERA in eight outings at Citizens Bank Park, where he made his big league debut July 26, 2007.
"I think it's more me not executing," Lannan said. "That's what it comes down to, and it's against really good Philly lineups. So I think it comes down to me executing pitches. It doesn't really matter where you're pitching. This park is smaller. You've just got to execute your pitches."
Lannan has never pitched against Kansas City, but outfielder Jeff Francoeur is 13 for 25 with a homer and four doubles when facing him.
Lannan will be looking to help the Phillies (1-3) get on track after they blew a 4-0 lead and lost 13-4 to the Royals (2-2) in Friday's series opener.
"It's a tough one," first baseman Ryan Howard said. "You don't want to lose your (home) opener like this."
Alex Gordon and Chris Getz each hit bases-loaded triples, and Eric Hosmer finished 4 for 5 with three RBIs as Kansas City pounded out 19 hits - two more than it totaled in dropping two of three to the White Sox earlier this week.
"We knew we didn't swing the bats great in Chicago," Gordon said. "We just kind of moved on. We never lost confidence in our offense. We came in here confident."
Luis Mendoza (8-10, 4.23) will get the ball for Kansas City after setting career highs in victories, appearances (30) and starts (25) last season.
Mendoza then was named the MVP of the Caribbean League playoffs after throwing 13 1-3 scoreless innings for Mexico.
"I did it with that reason, to come to spring ready to compete, and every start I was on the mound to show them that I could get people out and that I can be consistent in what I'm doing," Mendoza told the Royals' official website.
"I'm pitching with great confidence, and that's the main thing. I think I can take that to the big league level and get people out."
Mendoza tossed one scoreless inning of relief in his only appearance against Philadelphia on June 28, 2008, while with Texas. Phillies center fielder Ben Revere is 4 for 13 with a triple against the right-hander.
