| |  | BALTIMORE: BALTIMORE (AP) - For the first time in 17 years, the Baltimore Orioles open a new baseball season as defending AL East champions.
The Orioles can only hope for better results than in 1998, when they followed a wire-to-wire run to the division crown with a 79-83 flop - launching a franchise-record run of 14 straight losing seasons.
Although Baltimore lost slugger Nelson Cruz, Gold Glove right fielder Nick Markakis and setup man Andrew Miller from a club that last year went 96-66 and advanced to the AL Championship Series, manager Buck Showalter has no intention of disappointing a fan base that has embraced a team coming off its second playoff appearance in three seasons.
''They come to Camden to watch us win,'' Showalter said. ''There's no more passionate, sincere group of fans than we have. Nothing would kick me in the chest more than for us to regress. I want to keep going forward.''
Baltimore made only one significant offseason acquisition, picking up outfielder Travis Snider in a trade with Pittsburgh. The big question is, do the Orioles still have enough good players to stay atop the AL East?
''It definitely stinks to lose Markakis, what he brought to the clubhouse, and Cruz, what he brought to the field. But we've got to move on,'' said Steve Pearce, who's coming off the best year of his career. ''You look around the locker room and there's a lot of talent here. All our pitching's returned, so we still have a really good team.''
The Orioles are counting on third baseman Manny Machado and catcher Matt Wieters to bounce back from injury-shortened seasons and for first baseman Chris Davis to regain the form he showed in 2013 before slumping miserably last year.
None of the three were available in the postseason, when the Orioles swept Detroit in the division playoff before being bounced in four games by the Kansas City Royals.
Davis' absence will extend into opening day, on April 6 in Tampa Bay, when he concludes his 25-game suspension for using a banned amphetamine. Wieters is expected to start the season in the disabled list as he continues his recovery from elbow ligament surgery, but at least Machado appears on target to make up for lost time.
The offense will be a work in progress, but the Orioles hope they won't need heavy hitting to back a starting rotation that remains entirely intact. Chris Tillman, Wei-Yin Chen, Bud Norris and Miguel Gonzalez combined to go 54-29 last year, and the foursome could get some help from right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez, who's looked good in spring training after stumbling in his Orioles debut last year.
The bullpen will be anchored by Zach Britton, who had 37 saves in 41 tries during his first season as a closer.
Some things to know about the 2015 Orioles:
TOP OF THE LINEUP: Alejandro De Aza is expected to take over for Markakis as the leadoff hitter. De Aza is faster than Markakis and had a .341 on-base percentage after being obtained from the White Sox before the trade deadline.
''I will just let the game dictate what to do,'' he said.
What De Aza needs to do is get on base ahead of Machado, Davis and cleanup hitter Adam Jones.
DAVIS SEEKS A FRESH START: Slowed by a muscle strain near his rib cage, frustrated by defensive shifts and embarrassed by his suspension, Davis is raring to go in 2015.
''I'm in such a different situation this year than I was last year, having been off for a month and a half more than these guys,'' Davis said.
He says his teammates have forgiven him for using Adderall, which led to his untimely suspension.
''The guys are just ready to move on and focus on what we need to accomplish this year,'' Davis said.
SNIDER STEPS IN: With Markakis gone, Snider will attempt to fill the void in right field.
He hit .264 with 13 homers, 15 doubles and 38 RBIs in 140 games with Pittsburgh last season.
''I'm not here to replace Nick Markakis, but to be another man on this roster and to come out here every single day with the goal of getting better,'' Snider said.
MACHADO CONFIDENT: After playing only 82 games last year, Machado is ready to go after knee surgery.
''I feel great,'' the 2013 All-Star said. ''I'm doing everything. I'm stealing bases and hitting the ball well, playing good defense, doing everything I've got to do to get ready for the year.'' | | OAKLAND: OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Athletics topped even their most trade-happy of days by making nine swaps involving 27 players in a wild offseason for Billy Beane and his front-office mates.
As far as Beane is concerned, the A's wouldn't have even had a chance to close the gap on the reigning AL West champion Los Angeles Angels without a major offseason overhaul.
Even if that meant shipping out a trio of All-Stars in third baseman Josh Donaldson, first baseman Brandon Moss and catcher Derek Norris.
''Our expectations don't change, not with the guys we brought in,'' manager Bob Melvin said. ''You look at it early on and you're thinking, `What are we doing here?' Then we see the last few moves ... and it all came together at the end as far as what this team would look like going into spring. ... We feel real good about this group.''
There were so many changes that Melvin had to search for names on the backs of jerseys during February's FanFest.
Billy Butler is the new designated hitter, and two-time All-Star infielder Ben Zobrist can play just about anywhere for Melvin, who is always one to mix and match his lineups based on matchups and who's playing well. Ike Davis came in a November trade from the Pirates to play first base, while third baseman Brett Lawrie came from the Blue Jays in the swap that sent Donaldson to Toronto.
''It's unique. I don't think many teams have taken turnover like this,'' reliever Dan Otero said. ''Who are we to judge? Everybody's here for a reason, so it's going to be great.''
Still, all the change took some getting used to this spring for an Oakland clubhouse known for its easygoing nature.
You first must know your teammates' names.
''Team chemistry's a little funky. You have to spend time with people and get to know people for team chemistry to fully come,'' center fielder Coco Crisp said. ''You can't expect it just to happen. We'll be fine. We have a good group of core guys, guys that talk and mingle.''
Here are some things to know as the A's chase a fourth straight playoff berth:
BUTLER'S BIG MOVE: Butler makes the first move of his career and is coming off a down season with the Royals, who lost in a seven-game World Series to San Francisco. He batted .271 with nine home runs and 66 RBIs in 151 games last year, 108 of those as a DH. ''Everybody's awesome to be around,'' Butler said. ''I couldn't be happier to get ready for another year with them. There are a lot of talented major league guys in this room.''
FILLING THE VOIDS: Lawrie batted .247 with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs in 70 games for Toronto last season and takes pride in his defense to back up a talented rotation led by Sonny Gray and Scott Kazmir. ''We have a lot of ability out there and that's a plus for the pitching staff,'' Lawrie said. ''All they have to do is take care of business.''
GRIFFIN AND PARKER: Both right-handers are recovering from elbow ligament reconstructive surgery that sidelined them all of 2014. Parker hopes to return shortly after the season begins, while June has long been the target goal for these two. ''There's no reason to start ripping the slider,'' Parker said. ''I'm going to focus on command.''
SPEEDY OUTFIELD: Despite the losses around the diamond, Melvin likes the look of his speedy outfield with Crisp, Sam Fuld and Craig Gentry. ''They can cover a lot of ground,'' Melvin said. ''In the case of Gentry and Fuld, they throw very well, too. Especially in our outfield at home, the field can play big and you need to cover a lot of ground out there. It's a comfort to have, and I know our pitchers feel good about it, too, that on a cold night in Oakland, you can stay. It's tough to go opposite field and know that when a ball's hit in the air and stays in the ballpark it's probably going to get caught.''
ZITO'S COMEBACK: Back in his original uniform two years removed from the end of a $126 million, seven-year contract with San Francisco, lefty Barry Zito looks to be a factor for the A's out of the bullpen - or even to start when needed. After a year off, Zito arrived in Arizona motivated to show he could still pitch at the highest level. |

T.J. McFarland's two scoreless innings of one-hit relief in the Baltimore Orioles' loss in the middle game of this series may not seem significant - except that it marked the first time in six games that the Oakland Athletics faced a left-handed pitcher.
It hardly seems like enough preparation for seeing another one less than 16 hours later considering the Athletics' woes versus Wei-Yin Chen.
Chen can improve to 5-0 in his career against Oakland by helping visiting Baltimore capture this three-game set Wednesday.
Oakland (48-60) had not faced a lefty starter or reliever in the first six games of this 11-game homestand before McFarland - called up from the minors before the game - entered in the seventh inning and yielded only Ike Davis' double in the Orioles' 5-0 defeat.
"He really makes the bullpen better," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "It's good to get him back."
Now the Athletics will try to improve upon a league-worst 8-19 mark versus lefty starters as they face Chen (5-6, 3.24 ERA), who has a 1.69 ERA in five starts against them for his lowest mark against an opponent he has faced multiple times.
Chen may have a matchup problem with Billy Butler, who is 8 for 18 against him. Josh Reddick is hitless in nine at-bats versus Chen but has yet to play in this series due to lingering stiffness in his lower back.
Oakland's three RBI leaders can't regularly hit lefties with Reddick at .190, Butler at .189 and Stephen Vogt at .226. Vogt is also in a 2-for-34 funk after striking out three times in four hitless at-bats Tuesday.
Chen has never faced Billy Burns, a .327 hitter against southpaws. Utility man Danny Valencia, who is 4 for 15 against Chen, could make his Oakland debut after being claimed off waivers from Toronto on Monday.
Chen's streak of yielding three runs or fewer in 11 straight games ended in Friday's 8-7 victory over Detroit in which he was charged with six runs over a season-low 3 1-3 innings.
Baltimore (54-52) lost for the third time in 11 games, going 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position as its streak of homering in 10 straight was snapped. Chris Bassitt earned his first victory by striking out seven in seven innings.
The day game after a night game means that both Vogt and the Orioles' Matt Wieters may not be behind the plate. Wieters hasn't started at catcher in consecutive games since July 6-7.
"We're going to talk about it a little bit after the game, see how he feels," Showalter said.
Slugger Chris Davis is hitting .310 with five homers and 15 RBIs in his last eight games. Jonathan Schoop is 8 for 14 in his last four.
A's starter Kendall Graveman (6-7, 3.84) took a step in the right direction by yielding an unearned run in 6 2-3 innings in Friday's 2-1 loss to Cleveland in which he avoided defeat. He posted a 10.22 ERA in losing his previous three starts, recording only four outs in the last of them.
"I was getting ahead of hitters and trusting everything I threw," Graveman said.
The right-hander recorded five outs and allowed a double to J.J. Hardy over two relief appearances against the Orioles last year.
