KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHICAGO CUBS: HITTING: 'Under New Management' is the motto in Wrigleyville, where Epstein, Hoyer, Sveum and Co. aim to turn SS STARLIN CASTRO and a bunch of straw into gold. OF DAVID DeJESUS was an underrated first pick-up. But OFs ALFONSO SORIANO and MARLON BYRD are overpaid and over the hill. C GEOVANY SOTO has lost his mojo. New 3B IAN STEWART has a lousy career OPS of .737 away from Coors Field. 1B BRYAN LaHAIR is tagged as part of a 'youth movement,' but he's almost 30. The other youths'2B DARWIN BARNEY, IF JEFF BAKER, and IF BLAKE DEWITT 'are interchangeable guys with low ceilings. Fourth OF TONY CAMPANA is fast but one-dimensional. And minor-league reinforcements are scarce. OF BRETT JACKSON is solid, but blocked in the lineup. And former uber-prospect 3B JOSH VITTERS has done nothing to justify his third-overall draft status. This rebuilding process will take time. Meanwhile, somewhere in the Chicago suburbs, Jim Hendry quietly sobs into a pile of Cubs-themed stuffed animals.
STARTING PITCHING: RYAN DEMPSTER should bounce back from an unlucky year in which there was nearly a full-run difference between his ERA and his FIP. He's no ace in good times, but he's an underrated and dependable source of innings and strikeouts. MATT GARZA didn't disappoint in his debut season on the North Side, but he was an odd acquisition to begin with: the Cubs dealt top prospects from a thin system when all signs pointed to a belly-flop of a season. He's already trade bait again. JEFF SAMARDZIJA is moving to the rotation after a strong year in the bullpen (2.97 ERA, 87 K in 88 IP), but he needs to cut down on his walks (5.1 per 9 IP). What killed TRAVIS WOOD in 2011 was uncharacteristic wildness. His walk total spiked by over 50 percent from 2010. He's better than this, though it's hard to say how much. It could be that a 40-inning jump from 2010 to 2011 aided his freefall. Subpar newcomers PAUL MAHOLM and CHRIS VOLSTAD will also compete for rotation spots. The lefty Maholm is coming off his best season in Pittsburgh (3.66 ERA, 1.29 WHIP), but was awful after the All-Star break (0-5, 5.75 ERA, .355 Opp. BA). The 6-foot-8 Volstad was 5-13 with a 4.89 ERA for the Marlins last year, but still has time to figure things out at age 25.
RELIEF PITCHING: Because of his contract and the head-scratching faith in the 'closer mentality' that still pervades even the most enlightened front offices, CARLOS MARMOL will enter the 2012 campaign with a near-ironclad grip on ninth-inning duties for the Cubs. Trading away Sean Marshall, arguably Chicago's best reliever last season, is yet another vote of confidence for Marmol. His lack of command leads to more hittable pitches (along with tons of walks), though his ceiling for strikeouts and saves is sky-high. KERRY WOOD will be the main set-up man again after a triumphant return to Chicago last season (3.35 ERA, 57 K in 51 IP).
OAKLAND: HITTING: 2B JEMILE WEEKS may not be a legitimate .300 hitter, but he's still the best option they have at the leadoff spot. C KURT SUZUKI seemingly hits as many line outs as anyone in baseball. He has a solid bat for a catcher and qualifies as a middle-of-the-order option in Oakland. OF JOSH REDDICK is more of a line-drive hitter than a 25-HR guy, and he doesn't yet have the plate discipline to approach .300. 1B BRANDON ALLEN is an all-or-nothing hitter, but his potential for much-needed power should be enough for him to beat out DARIC BARTON. SS CLIFF PENNINGTON has quietly developed into a serviceable regular. With 3B SCOTT SIZEMORE out for the season with a torn ACL, either ERIC SOGARD or JOSH DONALDSON will win the job at third base. Neither player has reached 80 career at-bats yet. Highly-coveted Cuban OF YOENIS CESPEDES inked a four-year deal with Oakland, and will be expected to produced in the heart of the lineup immediately. OF COLLIN COWGILL is undersized, but has shown impressive power in the minors. The DH spot will fall to Allen when Barton is in the lineup. When he's not, it will be filled by such Quadruple-A types as KILA KA'AIHUE and CHRIS CARTER.
STARTING PITCHING: BRANDON McCARTHY reclamation project worked out nicely. He's an injury risk, but when healthy he's one of baseball's better middle-of-the-rotation arms. BARTOLO COLON pitched better than expected with the Yankees last year (7.4 K/9, 4.00 ERA), and should perform just as well in his new spacious ballpark. DALLAS BRADEN (shoulder) and BRETT ANDERSON (elbow) are both question marks after major surgeries. Braden's return date has been pushed back to early May, while Anderson will might not take the hill until June. The jewel of the Trevor Cahill trade, hard-throwing righty JARROD PARKER has a chance to make a big impact if his arm is recovered from 2009 Tommy John surgery. The Gio Gonzalez trade landed Oakland TOMMY MILONE and BRAD PEACOCK, both of whom are coming off impressive minor-league seasons. They'll compete for rotation spots this spring. TYSON ROSS could get a few starts, but he's gotten very hittable over the past year. They're in no hurry to start the arbitration clock of top prospect SONNY GRAY, but he should make some late-season starts.
RELIEF PITCHING: With Andrew Bailey gone, righty GRANT BALFOUR (2.47 ERA, 1.03 WHIP) will get the first chance to close games. Though his occasional bouts with command issues make him a risk. If Balfour falters, BRIAN FUENTES will get the next look because of his ninth-inning experience and strong second half of 2011 . . . Long a favorite inside the organization, injury-prone righty JOEY DEVINE has long been considered a future closer and should get some late-innings duties. The highest upside option for a future closer is 25-year-old righty FAUTINO DE LOS SANTOS. He has overpowering stuff but his command comes and goes.

*Cubs-Athletics Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Chicago (35-46) at Oakland (49-35), 10:05 p.m. EDT

A day after the Chicago Cubs traded one starting pitcher, the man who may be the next trade chip dealt will get the ball looking to continue his dominant stretch.

While scheduled starter Matt Garza has been impressive over the last few weeks, Oakland's Bartolo Colon has been fantastic for more than a month.

In what could be a pitchers' duel Wednesday night in Oakland, Garza goes up against Colon, who seeks to extend the longest winning streak of his career.

Colon (11-2, 2.79 ERA) is not only undefeated over his last nine starts, he's recorded a win in each of the last eight with a 1.37 ERA while allowing one home run over 59 innings.

The 40-year-old gave up one run and six hits in eight innings in a 6-1 win over St. Louis on Saturday. He won eight straight decisions for the Angels from July 21-Sept. 10, 2005, the same season he won the Cy Young Award and a league-best 21 games.

"He's been dominant," teammate Josh Donaldson told the club's official website. "It hasn't even been a question."

Donaldson stayed hot in Tuesday's 8-7 series-opening win, going 2 for 4 with a homer and starting the Athletics' three-run eighth with a leadoff single. He's 12 for 26 with four homers and 10 RBIs over his last eight games, posting an OPS of 1.548 for Oakland (49-35), which has won five of six.

The Cubs (35-46) made two trades Tuesday, sending starter Scott Feldman to Baltimore while also shipping Carlos Marmol to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Feldman had been strong in his only season with Chicago, going 7-6 with a 3.46 ERA.

The move by the rebuilding Cubs clearly seemed aim at cutting payroll while still trying to maximize return. They received veteran reliever Matt Guerrier from the Dodgers, and pitchers Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop and two international signing bonus slots from the Orioles.

With the run Garza (3-1, 3.83) has been on of late, he may be the best available arm on the trade market as the July 31 deadline approaches - something he's well-aware of.

"Somebody asked me, 'Well, do you sit by your phone?'" the 29-year old right-hander said. "I said, 'No.' No phone calls. No worries, guys. I'm not too worried about it, just going to keep plugging away every five days."

For prospective suitors, his stock only seems to be rising after he spent almost two months on the disabled list with a strained lat to start the season. He's 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA over his last three starts.

He struck out a season-high 10 while throwing seven innings of one-run ball in a 7-2 win at Milwaukee on Thursday.

"I like where I'm at, and I'm just going to try to keep improving," said Garza, who can become a free agent at the end of the year.

Although Chicago got rid of the much-maligned Marmol, the relief woes didn't end Tuesday. James Russell was tagged with the blown save as he surrendering the go-ahead three-run homer to Derek Norris with two outs in the eighth.

Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and Seth Smith are a combined 4 for 35 off Garza with nine strikeouts. He's 1-3 with a 3.09 ERA in five career games - four starts - against the A's, but hasn't seen them since 2010.

Colon is 0-1 with a 5.33 ERA in four career starts against the Cubs, whom he hasn't pitched against since 2004. He has a 1.20 ERA in winning his two starts against NL clubs this season, and is 5-1 with a 2.73 ERA in his last six versus the Senior Circuit.
