| |  | ST LOUIS: HITTING: Alienate and trade your talented young centerfielder for bullpen scraps and a middling, impending free-agent starter. Justify your ludicrous pitching changes by blaming crowd noise and your innocent bullpen coach'and you too could win a World Series! This was Tony La Russa baseball. But he's gone now, as is the all-world Albert Pujols. SS RAFAEL FURCAL liked his short stint in the Show Me State enough to sign up for more. OF CARLOS BELTRAN will hit second after an impressive 2011 campaign during which he produced solid numbers in pitchers' parks amidst weak lineups. 2Bs TYLER GREENE and DANIEL DESCALSO are the latest plucky 'gamer' to play infield at Busch. Resuscitated slugger 1B LANCE BERKMAN shifts to a much more suitable defensive position. OF MATT HOLLIDAY's OPS remains as strong as ever. 3B DAVID FREESE will never have to buy a drink in Missouri again after his postseason heroics. C YADIER MOLINA is a defensive whiz behind the plate and an underrated hitter. OFs ALLEN CRAIG and JON JAY are more suited to platoon roles, but Jay will be starting in center on Opening Day.
STARTING PITCHING: His stuff isn't nearly what it used to be, and he's more than earned his reputation within the game as a towering crybaby. But on the mound, CHRIS CARPENTER remains ruthlessly effective when he's healthy. But he'll miss the first couple of months of the 2012 campaign due to shoulder problems. ADAM WAINWRIGHT should be ready to go on Opening Day, and has shown every reason to think he'll be his old brilliant self. JAIME GARCIA cannot sustain a sub-2.00 ERA for a full season. He's a mid-rotation starter, but one of the better ones in all of baseball. Did KYLE LOHSE really register a 1.17 WHIP over an entire season? Really? He just doesn't miss enough bats to keep that going. JAKE WESTBROOK stayed healthy for a full season again, which is a relief given his past dalliances with the DL. He's an innings eater who's capable of another dozen wins. LANCE LYNN gives the Cardinals enviable depth in the rotation. He'll probably slide back to the bullpen once Carpenter returns. Uber-prospect SHELBY MILLER could be a second-half call-up.
RELIEF PITCHING: It doesn't look pretty when JASON MOTTE winds up and delivers a pitch, but in the end, results are results. The converted catcher has finally nailed down the closer role that many predicted would be his a few years ago. The only way he loses it this time is if he hurts himself with that painful delivery. FERNANDO SALAS can more than hold his own if that happens. He'll slot into the eighth-inning role, but he provides more of the pitching depth that is a hallmark of this Cardinals team. KYLE McCLELLAN, like Lynn, is serviceable both in relief or in the rotation. But he's better in the former role. | | OAKLAND: HITTING: 2B JEMILE WEEKS may not be a legitimate .300 hitter, but he's still the best option they have at the leadoff spot. C KURT SUZUKI seemingly hits as many line outs as anyone in baseball. He has a solid bat for a catcher and qualifies as a middle-of-the-order option in Oakland. OF JOSH REDDICK is more of a line-drive hitter than a 25-HR guy, and he doesn't yet have the plate discipline to approach .300. 1B BRANDON ALLEN is an all-or-nothing hitter, but his potential for much-needed power should be enough for him to beat out DARIC BARTON. SS CLIFF PENNINGTON has quietly developed into a serviceable regular. With 3B SCOTT SIZEMORE out for the season with a torn ACL, either ERIC SOGARD or JOSH DONALDSON will win the job at third base. Neither player has reached 80 career at-bats yet. Highly-coveted Cuban OF YOENIS CESPEDES inked a four-year deal with Oakland, and will be expected to produced in the heart of the lineup immediately. OF COLLIN COWGILL is undersized, but has shown impressive power in the minors. The DH spot will fall to Allen when Barton is in the lineup. When he's not, it will be filled by such Quadruple-A types as KILA KA'AIHUE and CHRIS CARTER.
STARTING PITCHING: BRANDON McCARTHY reclamation project worked out nicely. He's an injury risk, but when healthy he's one of baseball's better middle-of-the-rotation arms. BARTOLO COLON pitched better than expected with the Yankees last year (7.4 K/9, 4.00 ERA), and should perform just as well in his new spacious ballpark. DALLAS BRADEN (shoulder) and BRETT ANDERSON (elbow) are both question marks after major surgeries. Braden's return date has been pushed back to early May, while Anderson will might not take the hill until June. The jewel of the Trevor Cahill trade, hard-throwing righty JARROD PARKER has a chance to make a big impact if his arm is recovered from 2009 Tommy John surgery. The Gio Gonzalez trade landed Oakland TOMMY MILONE and BRAD PEACOCK, both of whom are coming off impressive minor-league seasons. They'll compete for rotation spots this spring. TYSON ROSS could get a few starts, but he's gotten very hittable over the past year. They're in no hurry to start the arbitration clock of top prospect SONNY GRAY, but he should make some late-season starts.
RELIEF PITCHING: With Andrew Bailey gone, righty GRANT BALFOUR (2.47 ERA, 1.03 WHIP) will get the first chance to close games. Though his occasional bouts with command issues make him a risk. If Balfour falters, BRIAN FUENTES will get the next look because of his ninth-inning experience and strong second half of 2011 . . . Long a favorite inside the organization, injury-prone righty JOEY DEVINE has long been considered a future closer and should get some late-innings duties. The highest upside option for a future closer is 25-year-old righty FAUTINO DE LOS SANTOS. He has overpowering stuff but his command comes and goes. |

The St. Louis Cardinals' bullpen just got a nice break.
Jake Westbrook will try to give that group even more rest.
The veteran sinkerballer goes for a third consecutive winning start in Sunday's series finale against the Oakland Athletics.
After rookie Shelby Miller was removed in the second inning of Friday's 6-1 series-opening loss, ace Adam Wainwright threw a five-hitter in Saturday's 7-1 victory.
It was an especially important performance after the Cardinals (49-31) had lost two straight and five of six to fall out of the top spot in the NL Central, and the team's previous six starters had a combined 6.75 ERA in 29 1-3 total innings.
St. Louis will try to build on its second victory over an AL team in eight tries with Westbrook (4-2, 2.21 ERA) looking to improve to 5-0 in interleague road starts since joining the Cardinals in 2010. The right-hander threw six innings of four-run ball in Tuesday's 13-5 victory at Houston.
It was Westbrook's third appearance since missing more than a month with inflammation in his elbow.
"I feel pretty good," he told the Cardinals' official website. "You're always going to have to grind through some things, being 35 with the elbow and body I have."
He hasn't won three straight starts since a five-start stretch from July 21-Aug. 11.
Westbrook, who last faced the A's in 2010 while with Cleveland, is 2-4 with a 3.12 ERA in six starts in Oakland.
The A's (47-35), winners of 15 of 18 at home, could really use a lengthy outing from Tommy Milone (6-7, 4.06) after Jarrod Parker left in the fourth inning Saturday with tightness in his right hamstring.
Milone, though, is winless in four starts and has logged 10 total innings in his last two after yielding three runs in a season-low 4 2-3 innings of Tuesday's 7-3 win over Cincinnati.
"I don't know, something was a little bit off," the left-hander told the Athletics' official website after his 103-pitch outing. "I wasn't able to throw it where I wanted to. It was just an uncomfortable feeling."
Milone can't afford another wild outing - he walked a carer high-tying four Tuesday - with the Cardinals batting a major league-best .339 with runners in scoring position. They went 4 for 7 in those situations Saturday.
Slugger Matt Adams provided the power with his first career two-homer game, while second baseman Matt Carpenter extended his hitting streak to nine. He's batting .359 during that stretch.
Oakland couldn't generate much offense Saturday - with no runners reaching second base until the eighth inning - but Jed Lowrie and Josh Reddick each carry eight-game hitting streaks into the series finale. Both will get their first look at Westbrook.
With eight hits in 15 at-bats, A's center fielder Coco Crisp has the third-highest batting average (.533) off Westbrook among those that have faced him at least 15 times.
No Cardinals player has batted against Milone.
