Machado returns to Bronx as member of Padres

Manny Machado played 45 games at Yankee Stadium as a member of the Baltimore Orioles. When he reached free agency following last season's 66-game stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers, many thought Machado would sign with the New York Yankees.

Machado met with the Yankees during the offseason but wound up signing a 10-year, $300 million contract with the San Diego Padres in February.

Machado will make his first appearance at Yankee Stadium as a Padre on Monday afternoon in the opener of a three-game interleague series with the Yankees.

The shortstop owned a .289 average with eight home runs and 20 RBIs at Yankee Stadium during six-plus seasons with the Orioles, who traded him to Los Angeles last July. This year, he is batting .267 with nine homers and 26 RBIs.

Machado's presence has helped San Diego climb above .500 -- to 28-25 -- although the Padres saw a five-game winning streak stopped with a 10-1 loss at Toronto on Sunday. The loss came a day after the Padres hit seven homers in a 19-4 win but the Padres head to New York for the first time since 2008 attempting to win their third straight series.

"You want to win these games," Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer told reporters. "We were on a nice little run. But we won the series. That's a positive. Move on. We've got New York. Always a tough series in New York."

The Yankees return home after their seven-game winning streak was stopped with an 8-7, 10-inning loss in Kansas City on Sunday. The Yankees overcame a six-run deficit and tied the game in the ninth before taking the loss when Jonathan Holder allowed the game-winning single to Whit Merrifield, whose grounder skipped over third baseman Gio Urshela's head.

Aaron Hicks hit a game-tying single with two outs in the ninth while Gleyber Torres hit a three-run homer.

Despite seeing a comeback fall short, the Yankees have been amongst the hottest teams in the majors for the better part of a month. They are 11-2 since May 12, 16-4 in their last 20 games and 28-9 since April 16.

"We have a really good team," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "We have a chance to have a special team. It's really early in the season, though, and you just have to keep moving on and playing good baseball."

New York is trying to avoid consecutive losses for the second time during its hot streak and is 14-4 in its last 18 home games, a stretch during which Giancarlo Stanton and Didi Gregorius have not appeared in a game and Aaron Judge injured his oblique.

Left-hander Matt Strahm starts for San Diego, looking for his ninth straight outing of two earned runs or fewer. He extended the streak Tuesday when he allowed two runs on four hits in six innings in a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Since allowing five earned runs on April 1, he owns 2.28 ERA with 39 strikeouts and five walks in eight starts.

Strahm is starting against the Yankees for the first time, though he had three scoreless relief appearances against New York as a member of the Kansas City Royals.

The Yankees did not announce a starting pitcher for Monday but are expected to use the opener. Chad Green has filled that role twice but he pitched Saturday and may not do it again Monday.

It is possible the Yankees turn to David Hale to fill the role. Hale had his contract purchased from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday and pitched four innings in an 11-4 win at Baltimore that day to get the save.

Monday marks the 16th meeting between the teams. The Yankees are 9-6 against the Padres, including a 5-1 mark at home.
