| |  | BOSTON: BOSTON (AP) - A revamped lineup and change in attitude has the Boston Red Sox looking to repeat a feat they performed just two seasons ago when they went from worst to World Series champions.
Like the hip-hop song they blasted in their locker room after the 2013 division and World Series titles were clinched in Fenway Park, the Red Sox started at the bottom.
They've carried the theme over this season.
''There's a good vibe going around,'' said first baseman Mike Napoli, who rallies spirits in the clubhouse by growing beards with teammates. ''It feels a little like 2013 in here. We're just having fun.''
During this past offseason, GM Ben Cherington looked to grow a weak offense that finished 11th in the AL in scoring.
Cherington spent $88 million to sign Hanley Ramirez, who began in the organization's minor league system before stints with Miami and Los Angeles, and signed third baseman Pablo Sandoval to a five-year, $95 million deal.
It was a quick fix for a lineup that lacked pop besides another strong season by Big Papi.
''This has a chance to be a lineup that doesn't give the opposition too many breathers or take a hitter off - so to speak,'' manager John Farrell said. ''There's the ability to do some damage up and down the lineup.''
The 39-year old Ortiz posted a .263 average with 35 homers and 104 RBIs last season, his eighth time in 12 reaching 30/100 with the club.
The revised order still leaves the question of how Red Sox starting pitching will hold up.
Cherington moved quickly after left-hander Jon Lester opted not to return, signing instead with the Cubs.
The GM acquired right-hander Rick Porcello from Detroit for slugger Yoenis Cespedes, traded for lefty Wade Miley and signed free agent Justin Masterson, who was coming off an injury-plagued season. The trio is expected to join Clay Buchholz and Joe Kelly.
Some have questioned whether they have a top-of-the-rotation type. Buchholz thinks they'll feed off the doubters and strive.
''I think we're going to fly under the radar for the most part, which I think is a good thing,'' he said. ''At some point they're going to say, `They've got their stuff in order and they've got a pretty good staff.'''
They aren't hiding from how bad last season ended after going 71-91 and finishing 25 games out in the AL East.
''Our record says what we were, and that wasn't good,'' Farrell said.

A FUN TRIO
Just a few days into spring training, Ortiz dubbed himself, Ramirez and Sandoval as ''The Three Amigos.'' The three are expected to bring both pop and some interesting times in the clubhouse.
''This will be a lively group and, I think, a fun one to be part of,'' Farrell said. ''I think the biggest thing is, they love to play the game. You can see the joy come out of them when they do well, and there's no question they'll draw from one another - the confidence they'll draw from one another.''

NO STICKER SHOCK HERE
The Red Sox pledged more than $180 million to bring in Ramirez and Sandoval.
''The proven power hitter obviously has a hefty price tag attached to it,'' Farrell said.
Ramirez hit 13 homers with 71 RBIs. Sandoval had 16 with 73 and won a World Series with San Francisco.

KEEP QUIET AND PLAY
Shane Victorino, who had his 2014 season cut short by back surgery, isn't about to try to analyze what went wrong last season. He feels like it's time to move on and make up for it.
''You try to be the best team you can be,'' he said. ''Don't want to sit here and talk about this and talk about that. You've got to go out there and do it. There's no other way of looking at it.''

KEEP AN EYE ON THIS
Ortiz didn't want to listen to any new rules about speeding up the game by having batters keep one foot in the box in between pitches. He even joked that he'll run out of money if he's fined.
''This game has been going on for over 100 years,'' he said. ''It's the nature of the game. I don't care who you are, you're not going to change. The pitch comes through, you come out of the box, you come back in.'' | | NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is gone, the final remaining link to the New York Yankees' last dynasty. He left behind a team in transition, that failed to make the playoffs in consecutive years for the first time in a generation and is beset with an older core coming off injuries.
Alex Rodriguez's return from a season-long drug suspension is the most interesting aspect of the Yankees, who enter the season with a health-challenged rotation, rebuilt bullpen and lineup that was among the least potent in the American League last year.
''I think we've added a lot of good young arms,'' manager Joe Girardi said. ''Added some good young players, as well. I think we've really seen an improvement in our young minor league players and the impact they are capable of having. I think we will continue to see that for years to come.''
If the Yankees founder, young players could be given more of a chance. Top prospects include pitcher Luis Severino, infielders Jose Pirela and Rob Refsnyder, and outfielder Aaron Judge.
But first, many of the old, beaten-up players will be given a chance to show they have something left.
Left fielder Brett Gardner (abdomen) and right fielder Carlos Beltran (elbow) return from surgery, and Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) missed a significant stretch of spring training. First baseman Mark Teixeira (wrist) hit .216 last year, 143rd among 148 major league qualifiers in his return from an injury that sidelined him for most of 2013.
After signing a big-money deal with the Yankees, catcher Brian McCann was hitting just .209 in May before improving in the second half to finish at .232. Third baseman Chase Headley, acquired from San Diego in July, was given a new contract by the Yankees because they have no confidence in A-Rod's ability to play the field. New York also re-signed Stephen Drew under the theory he can't be as bad as he was in 2014.
Didi Gregorius, obtained from Arizona in a trade, is the primary offensive newcomer and replaces Jeter at shortstop. Left-handed-hitting Garrett Jones hopes to earn at-bats.
''Jeter is still Jeter. Everything that everybody is going to talk about is Jeter,'' Gregorius said. ''But for me - I'm learning and I'm there just to play the game, so just trying to focus on the game and trying to win every game, that's all I can say, not worrying about what's going on around.''
LIGHTNING ROD: The three-time AL MVP, who turns 40 on July 27, has not played a full season since 2007 because the suspension, operations on both hips and other injuries. New York owes him $61 million over the final three seasons of his contract, so he will be given a chance to earn at-bats as a DH, especially against left-handed starters.
RICKETY ROTATION: Masahiro Tanaka missed 2 1/2 months in his first season because of a small elbow ligament tear the Yankees say didn't need surgery. CC Sabathia, limited to eight starts last year, has to show he can pitch effectively with reduced velocity. Michael Pineda, back from shoulder surgery, had a 1.89 ERA in 13 starts last year but missed a long stretch because of the shoulder. New York hopes hard-throwing Nathan Eovaldi can learn to be effective after his acquisition from Miami. With Chris Capuano on the DL and Ivan Nova not expected back from Tommy John surgery until May or June, Adam Warren was the leading contender for fifth starter.
BULLPEN: A strong point last year, the Yankees rebuilt the `pen. David Robertson was allowed to leave for the Chicago White Sox, and David Phelps, Shawn Kelley and Shane Greene were traded. Lefty Andrew Miller and Scott Baker were signed, and Justin Wilson and Chris Martin acquired in trades. Miller and Dellin Betances competed in spring training to replace Robertson as closer.
HOPS: The Yankees are sharing their ballpark with Major League Soccer's expansion New York City team, and Teixeira complained before the soccer team's home opener that the infield would get torn up, leading to bad hops. |

Luis Severino, one of the majors' most highly touted pitching prospects, figures to draw a lot of eyeballs when he makes his debut against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.
Given the New York Yankees' offensive surge, he could draw a lot of run support, too.
Severino is a 21-year-old right-hander and the crown jewel of New York's farm system. He's 7-0 with a 1.91 ERA through 11 starts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, surrendering no home runs in 61 1-3 innings. He boasts a fastball that can reach the high-90s, along with a change-up and slider.
General manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday he'd remain in the rotation regardless of Wednesday's performance.
"If he performed up to his capabilities, we felt he would pitch for us from August on at some point," Cashman told MLB's official website. "And here we are. So now it's, let's see what we've got."
New York's offense is certainly capable of backing Severino up. The Yankees (60-45) won 13-3 Tuesday, getting three-run homers by Brian McCann and Chris Young during a nine-run seventh inning. They've won 11 of 15 and have 90 runs and 21 homers over their last 10 games.
They were 8 for 15 with runners in scoring position, and Chase Headley is batting .435 with 12 RBIs during a 12-game hitting streak after a 2-for-5 night.
"Honestly, the blunt way to say it is we have a lot of really good hitters," Young said. "Everybody's a threat right now."
The status of McCann, who has three home runs in his last five games, is uncertain after he tweaked his knee and moved to first base Tuesday. Joe Girardi said the team would learn more about the situation Wednesday.
New York has averaged 7.3 runs in taking seven of the last eight meetings
The Red Sox (47-60) have been limited to 16 runs during an eight-game road losing streak, and haven't lost nine in a row away from home since a 10-game slump Aug. 25-Sept. 29, 2001.
They'll counter Severino with Steven Wright (4-4, 4.53 ERA), a 30-year-old journeyman drafted in 2006 by Cleveland. Wright enjoyed his best outing of the season Thursday, striking out a career-high eight while limiting the Chicago White Sox to two runs over seven innings in an 8-2 victory.
Home runs remain a concern - both runs came on Jose Abreu's homer - the eighth allowed by Wright over 39 1-3 innings in seven starts.
Wright won his only appearance against New York this year, permitting two runs over five innings of relief in a 6-5, 19-inning road victory on April 10. Mark Teixeira homered against him.
Pablo Sandoval has hit safely in 12 straight against the Yankees after homering Tuesday.
New York placed outfielder Dustin Ackley on the disabled list prior to the series opener due to a strained lower back and is expected to miss a month or more. He was 0 for 3 through two appearances off the bench for the Yankees since being acquired from Seattle last week.
