KEY GAME INFORMATION
BOSTON: BOSTON (AP) - Last season was one to remember for fans of the Red Sox - and one to forget for the players.
Soon after Boston's third World Series championship in 10 years, that bearded bunch decided to put it behind them and focus on what they must do to keep winning.
''It was a dream come true last year,'' pitcher Jake Peavy said. ''It's a new year. I think that's been a slogan of ours on the text messages that we've been exchanging with the guys, `Hey turn the page, it's a new year, it's 2014.' We haven't done anything and, obviously, some teams in our division got awfully better.''
The Red Sox won't be sneaking up on them, not after rebounding from a 69-93, last-place finish in the AL East to a 97-65 record, a 28-win improvement.
''You've got the bull's-eye on your back,'' second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. ''You want to get everybody's best, so I think it's going to be a fun challenge for everybody.''
John Farrell's disciplined, businesslike approach worked in his first year as Boston's manager. That, and the influx of players to improve the toxic clubhouse chemistry, made the one season under the animated Bobby Valentine seem like a distant memory.
Those players, including Jonny Gomes, Mike Napoli and Shane Victorino, return. The Red Sox lost center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury to the New York Yankees then signed Grady Sizemore as a possible replacement. Sizemore missed the last two seasons with knee and back injuries that required surgery but has had a healthy, productive spring training.
''In this group, no one's going to let anybody sit back and relax,'' Pedroia said. ''We're always going to push each other and make sure that we're respecting the game and playing the game the right way. If we do that, we should be all right.''
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.

*Red Sox-Yankees Preview* =========================

Boston (60-77) at New York (70-65), 7:05 p.m. EDT

The New York Yankees are on the verge of losing another series as their playoff hopes continue to dim.

It won't be easy for them against Boston Red Sox rookie starter Anthony Ranaudo, who has won all three starts including his big league debut against New York.

The fading Yankees are running out of time as they look to avoid a fourth straight defeat and even this three-game home set Wednesday night.

New York (70-66) dropped series in Detroit and Toronto entering this nine-game homestand against its biggest rival.

The last-place Red Sox (61-77) aren't so formidable anymore but they have taken four of six from the Yankees after winning 9-4 on Tuesday. New York fell five games behind the Tigers for the AL's second wild card.

"These series are extremely important, it's not how you want to start a homestand," manager Joe Girardi said.

Ranaudo (3-0, 4.50 ERA) will try to add to their woes in his fourth start. He has gone six innings in each of the first three, yielding three runs to earn Friday's 8-4 victory at Tampa Bay.

The right-hander grew up in New Jersey rooting for the Yankees, who he beat by allowing two runs in a 4-3 win Aug. 1. He struck out two - including Derek Jeter for the first of his career - and is eager to pitch in the Bronx for the first time.

"I can't even describe how excited I'm going to be," Ranaudo said. "There's going to be a lot of emotions."

The emotions were of a different variety Tuesday for New York after it fell behind 6-0 in the third inning. The Yankees had a four-game win streak snapped at home, where they average 3.6 runs for the AL's second-worst mark.

"Did I think at this point at the season we'd score more runs? Absolutely," Girardi said. "In this ballpark? Absolutely. But it hasn't happened for various reasons and we need that to change."

Making matters worse is that New York's Martin Prado left in the ninth inning with a tight left hamstring. Prado is hitting .383 in his last 15 games.

"That's not someone that we want to lose, he's played extremely well," Girardi said. "We'll just have to see how he is."

The Yankees will give the ball to Hiroki Kuroda (9-8, 3.88), who is 2-0 with a 2.75 ERA in his last three outings. He gave up two runs over seven innings in last Thursday's 3-2 loss at Detroit.

The right-hander won his lone 2014 start against Boston by allowing four runs in 6 1-3 innings in a 7-4 victory April 12. David Ortiz is 11 for 20 against him.

Kuroda won't have to worry about Dustin Pedroia, a .314 hitter versus him. Pedroia is not expected to return from a concussion suffered Saturday until Friday at the earliest.

Xander Bogaerts homered among his four hits Tuesday and fellow rookie Mookie Betts also went deep for Boston, which has won eight of its last 11 road games.

"This season definitely has not been the way that we all wanted, we all expected it to be. But there's a lot of talent coming up and hopefully we can blend in together and have a good future," Bogaerts said.
