KEY GAME INFORMATION
BOSTON: BOSTON (AP) - Last season was one to remember for fans of the Red Sox - and one to forget for the players.
Soon after Boston's third World Series championship in 10 years, that bearded bunch decided to put it behind them and focus on what they must do to keep winning.
''It was a dream come true last year,'' pitcher Jake Peavy said. ''It's a new year. I think that's been a slogan of ours on the text messages that we've been exchanging with the guys, `Hey turn the page, it's a new year, it's 2014.' We haven't done anything and, obviously, some teams in our division got awfully better.''
The Red Sox won't be sneaking up on them, not after rebounding from a 69-93, last-place finish in the AL East to a 97-65 record, a 28-win improvement.
''You've got the bull's-eye on your back,'' second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. ''You want to get everybody's best, so I think it's going to be a fun challenge for everybody.''
John Farrell's disciplined, businesslike approach worked in his first year as Boston's manager. That, and the influx of players to improve the toxic clubhouse chemistry, made the one season under the animated Bobby Valentine seem like a distant memory.
Those players, including Jonny Gomes, Mike Napoli and Shane Victorino, return. The Red Sox lost center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury to the New York Yankees then signed Grady Sizemore as a possible replacement. Sizemore missed the last two seasons with knee and back injuries that required surgery but has had a healthy, productive spring training.
''In this group, no one's going to let anybody sit back and relax,'' Pedroia said. ''We're always going to push each other and make sure that we're respecting the game and playing the game the right way. If we do that, we should be all right.''
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.

*Red Sox-Yankees Preview* =========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Boston (60-76) at New York (70-65), 7:05 p.m. EDT

The New York Yankees are entering the final month of the season with three teams to pass in the AL wild-card race.

Their longest remaining homestand begins Tuesday night against the Boston Red Sox, and the nine-game stretch could provide them with their best opportunity to make up ground.

The Yankees (70-65) have won four straight and 15 of 23 at home. They've lost consecutive series after dropping the last two of a three-game set in Toronto over the weekend, failing to hold onto a three-run lead in Sunday's 4-3 loss.

New York's deficit in the AL East is 8 1/2 games, which makes the second wild-card spot the more feasible task, though it has no games remaining with fellow contenders Detroit, Seattle and Cleveland.

"You know what's in front of you," shortstop Derek Jeter told MLB's official website. "We need to win games."

Mark Teixeira went 0 for 4 on Sunday to extend his slump to 3 for 33 over the last nine games. Things haven't been much better at Yankee Stadium, where the first baseman is 6 for 47 in 13 games since the beginning of July.

Manager Joe Girardi hopes to have center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury back to face his old team after being held out of the lineup the last two games because of a sore left ankle. A pinch-hit double Sunday extended his hitting streak to seven games, over which he's batting .542.

The Red Sox (60-77), well removed from the playoff race, are entering their final series against Jeter at Yankee Stadium. They settled for a split in a four-game set in Tampa Bay after Monday's 4-3 loss in 10 innings.

The Yankees have an 8-5 lead in the season series, something they'll look to improve on with Shane Greene (4-1, 3.09 ERA) on the mound.

The right-hander is 2-0 with a 2.42 ERA in his last four starts. His latest win came after holding Detroit to two runs and five hits while striking out eight in seven innings of Wednesday's 8-4 victory.

Against Boston, the rookie has a 5.40 ERA in a start and a relief outing. Mike Napoli homered Monday and also homered in his only at-bat against Greene on Aug. 2, but he's 3 for 32 over his last eight games.

Greene will be opposed by Joe Kelly, who will be looking for his first Red Sox win in his first career game against New York. Kelly (0-1, 3.86) has struggled with his control in five starts with Boston, issuing 18 walks with two hit batters in 28 innings.

The right-hander, however, limited opponents to two runs and four hits in 11 innings over his last two starts. Kelly allowed two runs and three hits in six innings while not receiving a decision in Wednesday's 5-2 loss in Toronto.

Martin Prado, batting .367 over his last 15 games, is 2 for 4 with a home run off Kelly.

Boston designated hitter David Ortiz was out of the lineup Monday after suffering a bruised right foot last week, but he's expected back for this series.

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia is unlikely to return during the series after missing the last two games because of concussion-like symptoms.

"I feel normal but I've got to take all these tests and stuff, which is kind of tough," Pedroia said. "I haven't passed many tests in my schooling life."
