| | | TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
| | NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.

*Rangers-Yankees Preview* =========================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Texas (40-60) at New York (51-48), 1:05 p.m. EDT
So far, Brandon McCarthy is getting results for the New York Yankees.
He'll try to continue doing that against one of his former teams in Thursday's finale of this four-game set as the Yankees go for a third straight win over the Texas Rangers.
New York (52-48) has won both games with McCarthy (1-0, 1.42 ERA) on the mound after acquiring him from Arizona on July 6.
The right-hander earned his first victory in pinstripes Saturday, throwing 71 of 99 pitches for strikes while yielding one run with nine strikeouts in six innings of a 7-1 win over Cincinnati.
"He's got top-of-the-rotation stuff, and we're really glad to have him," catcher Brian McCann said.
McCarthy's strong start for the Yankees has only continued his recent turnaround. He's 3-0 with a 1.78 ERA over his last four starts after going 1-10 with a 5.38 ERA over his first 16.
"It's nice that it's just at least a good first impression," McCarthy told MLB's official website. "Mostly, the way the season's gone, it's just more positive outings, more positive outings, and get back to where I want to be and just build on success. Whether it's here or in Arizona, I just wanted to get back into a successful groove and feel like myself again."
McCarthy is 1-3 with a 4.98 ERA in eight starts against Texas since spending 2007-09 there.
The Yankees, winners of five of six, are having few issues with the Rangers. They've held them to 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position while winning the last two games 2-1, including Wednesday's five-inning rain-shortened matchup.
Brett Gardner owns a .353 career average at home against Texas in the regular season, getting three hits in this series after connecting for a solo shot Wednesday.
The Rangers (40-61), owners of the worst record in baseball, have dropped 18 of 21. During Wednesday's loss, they dealt closer Joakim Soria to Detroit in exchange for minor league pitchers Jake Thompson and Corey Knebel.
Colby Lewis (6-7, 6.37) is getting the ball against the Yankees for the first time since winning the decisive Game 6 in the 2010 AL championship series. The right-hander won both of his outings in that series in Arlington, allowing three runs in 13 2-3 innings.
This will be his first start at the new Yankee Stadium, and his first in the Bronx since 2003.
"I think it's kind of cool to be able to pitch in the old Yankee Stadium and the new Yankee Stadium," Lewis said.
Lewis allowed two runs in five innings of a 4-1 loss at Toronto on Saturday, a dramatic improvement after being tagged for a career-high 13 runs in 2 1-3 innings of a 15-6 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels nine days earlier.
"I have to continue to do what I was doing (Saturday)," Lewis said. "I feel like I was throwing the ball really well. I was locating my offspeed pitches. I need to continue to do that. I could cut back a couple of walks, but other than that, I feel like I'm in a pretty good place with the feel of my pitches and how my body feels."
His latest outing, however, gained notoriety for a bizarre incident with the Blue Jays' Colby Rasmus in the fifth. Lewis took offense to Rasmus bunting for a single against an infield shift with Toronto up 2-0, and he continued to voice his displeasure after the game.
"You're up by two runs with two outs and lay down a bunt," Lewis said. "I don't think that's the way the game should be played. I let him know and that was about it."
