| |  | CINCINNATI: CINCINNATI (AP) - Bryan Price's father worked for a savings and loan that had San Francisco Giants season tickets and would make some of them available to employees.
Any team was good to see. Two were best.
''So you go in there and battle for tickets to certain games,'' Price said. ''And I would circle the Reds and the Dodgers.''
He loved how the franchises were stocked with stars. He knew it would be fun watching them play his hometown Giants. He even dreamed of some playing or working for one of those teams.
That's why the last six weeks of spring training left him with a too-good-to-be-true feeling at times. He's managing the Reds, one of those teams he loved to see.
''It's almost a constant, surreal experience for me at this point,'' he said in February.
The surreal part gave way to reality pretty fast.
Starter Mat Latos had knee surgery the day spring training opened. Closer Aroldis Chapman got hit in the head by a line drive and is out for at least a month after having a plate put into his forehead. Starter Homer Bailey strained his groin. Relievers Jonathan Broxton and Sean Marshall aren't ready to start the season.

Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.

It's not unheard of for a reliever to be thrust into a starting role after the age of 30, though it's somewhat rare for one to succeed the way Alfredo Simon has.
Coming off his first All-Star game, the 33-year-old Simon starts for the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday while Brandon McCarthy makes his home debut for the New York Yankees.
Simon (12-3, 2.70 ERA) has been one of baseball's big surprises after entering the season with only 19 starts over 177 appearances for a 17-18 record and 4.11 ERA.
After Mat Latos was hurt in spring training, Simon was called on to fill in but has given the Reds (51-45) no reason to return him to the bullpen. His 12 wins going into the break tied for the most in baseball and double his previous career high set last season.
Simon, an All-Star replacement for teammate Johnny Cueto, is riding a streak of eight quality starts and has had only two outings this season where he's pitched less than six innings and allowed more than three earned runs.
The right-hander tossed a scoreless third inning in Tuesday's All-Star game despite allowing a leadoff single to Derek Jeter.
"It was big," Simon told MLB's official website. "I faced Derek Jeter in his final All-Star game. ... I just feel happy. My family has seen me pitch in the All-Star game. I'm really proud of myself."
Simon has three starts among six career appearances against the Yankees (48-47), going 0-2 with a 6.19 ERA in those outings. He's pitched at Yankee Stadium only once, allowing one run in one inning of relief for Baltimore on May 5, 2010.
With Joey Votto (thigh) back on the disabled list and Brandon Phillips out with a torn thumb ligament, Cincinnati's depleted lineup could use a nice stretch of pitching from Simon and the rotation to keep pace with first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central.
The Yankees have also been dealing with a slew of injuries, mostly to the starting rotation. CC Sabathia will have season-ending knee surgery and joins Masahiro Tanaka (elbow), Michael Pineda (shoulder) and Ivan Nova (Tommy John surgery) on the shelf.
Hiroki Kuroda is the only one left from New York's opening day rotation. Rounding out the current makeshift unit are David Phelps, rookies Chase Whitley and Shane Greene, and the newcomer McCarthy, who is set to make his second start with the Yankees.
The decimation of the staff led to the trade that brought McCarthy (0-0, 1.35) over from Arizona, where he was 3-10 with a 4.80 ERA. The right-hander made his Yankees debut July 9 at Cleveland and worked 6 2-3 innings while giving up four runs - one earned - and nine hits before New York won 5-4 in 14 innings.
McCarthy will try to keep the Yankees on track after Phelps had a solid outing in Friday's 4-3 victory in the series opener to earn his first win since June 19. Phelps gave up three runs - two earned - and six hits with seven strikeouts over 6 1-3 innings.
"Regardless of what the rotation looks like, I pride myself on being consistent," Phelps said. "When our rotation does take hits, I kind of put (it) on myself to step up."
Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-run homer and Carlos Beltran drove in a run for New York after being activated from the concussion list before the game.
Brayan Pena, subbing for Votto at first base, homered twice for Cincinnati.
The victory opened a 10-game homestand for the Yankees, who are 19-23 in the Bronx and have 39 home games remaining - the most in the majors.
