| | | KANSAS CITY: HITTING: With Melky Cabrera gone, OF LORENZO CAIN will get first crack at leadoff and centerfield. If he falters, speedster JASON BOURGEOIS, vet MITCH MAIER and prospect WIL MYERS are waiting. Former Brewer YUNIESKY BETANCOURT will start at 2B and has good life in his bat for a middle infielder. OF ALEX GORDON may not hit for average, but his approach and power are there. DH BILLY BUTLER is rock solid, but it's fair to wonder whether his power will ever progress. 1B ERIC HOSMER has MVP-type upside, and he's on the verge of figuring out MLB pitching. OF JEFF FRANCOEUR still chases too many bad pitches, but the organization likes him and he still has some pop and speed. 3B MIKE MOUSTAKAS is too good for the minors, but he still hasn't caught up to major-league pitching. There's a good chance he finds his groove this year. C HUMBERTO QUINTERO will be the main backstop with BRAYAN PENA backing him up. Speedy SS ALCIDES ESCOBAR's bat hasn't caught up to his glove. STARTING PITCHING: K.C. once again hopes this is the year LUKE HOCHEVAR puts it all together. His velocity picked up late last year, allowing him to be more than a groundball guy. Lefty BRUCE CHEN's late-career renaissance continues. He'll be a reliable veteran arm in the middle of K.C.'s rotation again. FELIPE PAULINO has the biggest upside in this rotation. He's always had one of MLB's best fastballs. His problem was that, when he missed (which has been often), it was usually belt-high and over the middle of the plate. If he hits his spots as he did late last year, he's got potential. But Paulino will start the season on the DL with a sore elbow. The Royals hope to solve JONATHAN SANCHEZ's command issues. The lefty is a risk, but has legitimate No. 3 potential. Top prospect DANNY DUFFY will get every chance to pitch his way into the Opening Day rotation. RELIEF PITCHING: JOAKIM SORIA is out for the season with Tommy John surgery, leaving GREG HOLLAND to pick up closer duties. Holland was the Royals' best bullpen arm in 2011 and his stuff has always been nearly unhittable. It's just a matter of whether last year's vastly improved walk rate was for real. JONATHAN BROXTON was a disaster last season, but he'll be given every chance to become the No. 2 guy in this bullpen because of his experience in Los Angeles. AARON CROW was a first-round pick (twice) for his college career as a starter, but wore down late last year, and walked too many batters. | | NY YANKEES: HITTING: Despite his decline from mediocrity into downright counter-productivity, SS DEREK JETER gets to hit atop the best lineup in baseball. Off an MVP-caliber season, OF CURTIS GRANDERSON is a true star. His average is mediocre, but his power is elite and the Yankees are letting him run when on base. After two years with a sub-.260 average, 1B MARK TEIXEIRA's talent seems to be fading. He still puts up huge power numbers playing in a bandbox. Coming off knee and thumb injuries, 3B ALEX RODRIGUEZ is a serious injury risk hitting in the middle of this lineup. 2B ROBINSON CANO will once again see as many RBI chances as anyone. He's been great in those situations the past two seasons. OFs NICK SWISHER and BRETT GARDNER offer power and SBs, respectively, though the Yankees may look to upgrade if they continue to post lackluster numbers. C RUSSELL MARTIN will get plenty of playing time now that Jesus Montero is in Seattle. Veteran slugger RAUL IBANEZ is the new DH in town, and will love hitting towards the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium. STARTING PITCHING: CC SABATHIA struggled late last year and has logged a ridiculous number of innings over the past five years. He's a top-10 starter in the majors, but is starting to pass his prime. Newcomers HIROKI KURODA and MICHAEL PINEDA will both stabilize what was a shaky rotation last year. Kuroda, 37, posted a 3.07 ERA with the Dodgers and the 23-year-old Pineda has unlimited upside, fanning 173 batters in 171 innings with Seattle last season. IVAN NOVA benefitted from nearly nine runs of support per game. He keeps the ball down often enough to thrive in the Bronx, just without many strikeouts. PHIL HUGHES' stuff has regressed greatly since his days as a top prospect. He's trying to overcome conditioning problems this offseason. MANNY BANUELOS and DELLIN BETANCES are great prospects who may get a chance to start MLB games later this season. RELIEF PITCHING: Trust MARIANO RIVERA to stay dominant until proven wrong. He was better in 2011 than he was in 2010 despite some velocity slippage. DAVID ROBERTSON has a firm hold on eighth-inning duties after an All-Star season. He's second in line for saves. RAFAEL SORIANO wasn't a total bust, as he did just fine after a rough April. He's settled into the seventh-inning role since Robertson is more trusted that he is. After Tommy John surgery, JOBA CHAMBERLAIN is aiming to be back this June. Middle reliever CORY WADE was reliable last year, and has a chance to rack up some vulture wins if he keeps going strong. |

*Royals-Yankees Preview* ========================
Kansas City (42-44) at New York (48-41), 7:05 p.m. EDT
The New York Yankees are mired in their worst three-game scoring slump in eight seasons.
They will try to end those woes against the pitcher that has been easiest to hit against in the majors.
The Kansas City Royals will send Wade Davis to the mound Wednesday night when they continue this four-game set at Yankee Stadium.
New York (48-42) has lost three straight - all at home - and has scored one run in every defeat. It's the first time the Yankees have scored one or zero runs in three straight contests since April 27-29, 2005, and they have not done it four times in a row since Aug, 9-12, 1990.
The Yankees didn't score after the first inning in Tuesday's 3-1 defeat. They opened that frame with three straight singles for a run and added another hit to load the bases with one out before failing to score again.
"Any time you put four hits in an inning, you think you'll get more than one run," said manager Joe Girardi, whose team managed two more hits the rest of the game.
It's possible New York could break out against Davis (4-7, 5.42 ERA), who is allowing opponents to bat .322 - the highest mark in baseball.
Davis owns a 6.81 ERA on the road, and he's 2-4 with a 5.80 ERA in seven career starts against the Yankees. He's had trouble with Ichiro Suzuki, 10 for 19 against him, and Brett Gardner - 6 for 13.
The right-hander has shown signs of improvement, allowing three runs or fewer in five of his last six starts. He gave up three over seven innings last Friday in his second straight defeat, 6-3 to Oakland.
Davis will try to follow up two strong efforts by Kansas City starters in the Bronx. Jeremy Guthrie yielded one run over 6 2-3 innings in Monday's 5-1 victory and James Shields allowed one in seven Tuesday.
The Yankees have given up 10 runs in this losing streak that followed a season-high six-game win streak.
"The last three games we've had great pitching performances and we haven't been able to score runs and it's frustrating," said Travis Hafner, who is in a 1-for-17 slide.
Ivan Nova (3-2, 4.09) will try to duplicate his effort from last Friday's three-hitter in a 3-2 victory over Baltimore. He will make consecutive starts for the first time since he went on the disabled list April 27 due to right triceps inflammation.
Nova is 1-1 with an 11.88 ERA in two career starts against Kansas City, with Billy Butler going 4 for 6 against him.
Butler has homered in the first two games of this series, marking the first time he has gone deep in consecutive games since Sept. 27-28.
"Got one yesterday, got one today," he said.
Kansas City (43-44) can move back to .500 for the first time since June 17. The Royals have won five of their last seven at New York.
New York's Vernon Wells, who hasn't started three of the last four games and is hitting .237, is 1 for 11 against Davis.
