| |  | LA DODGERS: HITTING: The Dodgers were ravaged with injuries in 2010 and finished in the bottom third in the majors in runs (4.00 per game), homers (117) and OPS (.697). None of these poor numbers were the fault of OF MATT KEMP, who finished second in MVP voting with a .324 BA, 39 HR, 126 RBI and 40 steals. He says he wants a 50-50 season in 2012. 1B JAMES LONEY had the second-most homers (12) of any returning player, and batted .357 with a .608 SLG after August 1. If speedy SS DEE GORDON learns to be more patient at the plate (7 BB in 224 AB), he could score 90 runs from the top of the order. OF ANDRE ETHIER made headlines with a 30-game hit streak, but was once again dominated by lefties (.563 OPS). The team is counting on two veterans to drive in runs. 3B JUAN URIBE has been a walking infirmary lately, but still has 15-HR power, and OF JUAN RIVERA had 46 RBI in 219 AB after coming to the Dodgers. Two guys named Ellis, 2B MARK ELLIS and C A.J. ELLIS, will bat at the bottom of the order.
STARTING PITCHING: The Dodgers remain one of the better rotations in baseball, placing third in the majors in ERA (3.41) and fourth in opponents' BA (.242). The biggest reason for the success was the NL Cy Young and Triple Crown-winning performance of CLAYTON KERSHAW, who tied for the NL lead in wins (21) and topped all NL pitchers in ERA (2.28) and strikeouts (248). Fellow southpaw TED LILLY had a down year overall (12-14, 3.97 ERA), but had a fantastic final two months of the season (2.09 ERA, 0.93 WHIP). CHAD BILLINGSLEY notched his fifth straight season of double-digit wins, despite sporting a mediocre 4.21 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. AARON HARANG signed a two-year, $12M deal to join the Dodgers rotation. He won 14 games for the lowly Padres last year and finished with a career-best 3.64 ERA. CHRIS CAPUANO left the Mets for richer pastures (2-yr, $10M) of Los Angeles. Although he pitched well at spacious Citi Field (3.82 ERA, 1.21 WHIP), he was terrible on the road (5.42 ERA, 1.51 WHIP).
RELIEF PITCHING: Jonathan Broxton is gone, ending any kind of closer controversy the Dodgers may have been trying to avoid. JAVY GUERRA is the closer, and for good reason. He converted 21-of-23 save chances while posting a 2.31 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and allowing just two homers in 46.2 innings. If Guerra falters, manager Don Mattingly can afford to have a short leash with KENLEY JANSEN as his set-up man. Jansen led the majors with an insane 16.1 K-per-9 ratio and limited opponents to a .159 BA and .228 slugging percentage. At age 24, his upside is extremely high. MATT GUERRIER is a usually reliable reliever, but he is coming off a subpar 2011 campaign (4.07 ERA, 1.27 WHIP). | | NY YANKEES: HITTING: Despite his decline from mediocrity into downright counter-productivity, SS DEREK JETER gets to hit atop the best lineup in baseball. Off an MVP-caliber season, OF CURTIS GRANDERSON is a true star. His average is mediocre, but his power is elite and the Yankees are letting him run when on base. After two years with a sub-.260 average, 1B MARK TEIXEIRA's talent seems to be fading. He still puts up huge power numbers playing in a bandbox. Coming off knee and thumb injuries, 3B ALEX RODRIGUEZ is a serious injury risk hitting in the middle of this lineup. 2B ROBINSON CANO will once again see as many RBI chances as anyone. He's been great in those situations the past two seasons. OFs NICK SWISHER and BRETT GARDNER offer power and SBs, respectively, though the Yankees may look to upgrade if they continue to post lackluster numbers. C RUSSELL MARTIN will get plenty of playing time now that Jesus Montero is in Seattle. Veteran slugger RAUL IBANEZ is the new DH in town, and will love hitting towards the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium.
STARTING PITCHING: CC SABATHIA struggled late last year and has logged a ridiculous number of innings over the past five years. He's a top-10 starter in the majors, but is starting to pass his prime. Newcomers HIROKI KURODA and MICHAEL PINEDA will both stabilize what was a shaky rotation last year. Kuroda, 37, posted a 3.07 ERA with the Dodgers and the 23-year-old Pineda has unlimited upside, fanning 173 batters in 171 innings with Seattle last season. IVAN NOVA benefitted from nearly nine runs of support per game. He keeps the ball down often enough to thrive in the Bronx, just without many strikeouts. PHIL HUGHES' stuff has regressed greatly since his days as a top prospect. He's trying to overcome conditioning problems this offseason. MANNY BANUELOS and DELLIN BETANCES are great prospects who may get a chance to start MLB games later this season.
RELIEF PITCHING: Trust MARIANO RIVERA to stay dominant until proven wrong. He was better in 2011 than he was in 2010 despite some velocity slippage. DAVID ROBERTSON has a firm hold on eighth-inning duties after an All-Star season. He's second in line for saves. RAFAEL SORIANO wasn't a total bust, as he did just fine after a rough April. He's settled into the seventh-inning role since Robertson is more trusted that he is. After Tommy John surgery, JOBA CHAMBERLAIN is aiming to be back this June. Middle reliever CORY WADE was reliable last year, and has a chance to rack up some vulture wins if he keeps going strong. |

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly never won a World Series with the New York Yankees, but he'll forever be remembered as one of the greatest players in the team's storied history.
"Donnie Baseball" can expect to hear that appreciation Tuesday night when the Dodgers visit the Bronx for the first time since clinching the 1981 World Series.
Mattingly, a six-time All-Star, nine-time Gold Glove winner and the 1985 AL MVP, had his No. 23 retired to Monument Park after playing his entire 14-year career with the Yankees. The former first baseman never made it to the World Series, though, hanging it up in 1995, right before the Yankees' run of four titles in five seasons.
Mattingly returned to the Yankees in 2004 as a coach under Joe Torre, but the Yankees failed to advance to the World Series in his four seasons on the bench. Mattingly, many thought, would replace Torre after the team's longtime manager turned down a one-year offer, but Yankees brass opted for Joe Girardi.
Mattingly left the Yankees and spent the next three seasons as one of Torre's coaches with the Dodgers before taking over as manager in 2011.
His only appearance at new Yankee Stadium was in 2010 for the unveiling of a plaque commemorating late owner George Steinbrenner.
"(Yankees management) treated me fairly I thought," Mattingly told MLB.com. "Things work out for a reason. That would have been really bad timing for me. Terrible. I was going through some personal stuff that would have been miserable trying to manage for the first time and have that going on. So, that was a blessing in disguise.
"Coming to L.A. has been great, and obviously there's been a lot of turmoil this year, but I love what I'm doing and I like being in L.A."
Girardi expects Mattingly's two-game return to New York to be a positive experience.
"I know I've always loved him and appreciated what he's done, and I know the fans have seen a lot more than I have," Girardi said. "I think it'll be a great day for him."
A win would make it even more enjoyable, as the Dodgers (29-39) have dropped six of eight to fall a season-worst 10 games below .500.
They opened their nine-game trip by losing two of three to Pittsburgh. Los Angeles has won just four of 17 as the visitor.
"It's been kind of the same story and that's that we haven't been able to win a series," Mattingly said after Sunday's 6-3 defeat.
The Yankees (38-31), meanwhile, are back home following a 4-6 trip that ended with Sunday's 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. New York plated five runs in the third inning - a three-run homer from Travis Hafner and RBI hits from Lyle Overbay and Jayson Nix - en route to snapping a five-game skid.
The Yankees hit .199 while averaging 2.7 runs in their previous nine games.
New York likely will have to generate offense without Mark Teixeira for this series after he exited Saturday's 6-2 loss with an aggravated right wrist. The switch-hitter got a cortisone shot Sunday, and it was determined there were no new tears in the tendon sheath, which could have ended his season.
Overbay, who went 1 for 13 on the trip, is Teixeira's likely replacement.
The Yankees, three back of AL East-leading Boston, will face Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-2, 2.85 ERA) in the opener. The rookie left-hander last pitched in Wednesday's 8-6, 12-inning loss to Arizona, when he allowed three runs and a season-high 11 hits in six innings.
"My fastball was coming over the center off the plate all game, and my velocity really wasn't there," Ryu told the Dodgers' official website. "But I think that's because for the first time in a while (May 22) I went off of four days' rest."
He'll have had five days' rest Tuesday, and he's 3-0 with a 2.03 ERA in four starts with that time in between starts.
New York opens its nine-game homestand with Phil Hughes (3-5, 4.89) trying to bounce back from one of his worst outings of the season. The right-hander walked a career high-tying five in 4 1-3 innings of Wednesday's 5-2 loss at Oakland.
Hughes allowed only an unearned run over seven at Seattle in his previous outing.
"(Putting together consecutive quality starts is) something that he's going through right now," Girardi told the Yankees' official website. "He needs to figure that out for us."
Hughes is 1-3 with a 6.52 ERA in six home starts.
Rookie right fielder Yasiel Puig will make his Yankee Stadium debut after a three-hit effort Sunday lifted his batting average to .479 since the Dodgers called him up June 3.
Puig isn't going anywhere when Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford return from hamstring injuries, so that's left Andre Ethier's future in question. Ethier, though, hasn't let that impact him, going 9 for 20 with a homer and five RBIs in the last five games.
Since the Dodgers' World Series-clinching Game 6 victory at New York on Oct. 28, 1981, these clubs have split six games. They last played June 25-27, 2010, with the Yankees taking two of three.
