| |  | OAKLAND: HITTING: 2B JEMILE WEEKS may not be a legitimate .300 hitter, but he's still the best option they have at the leadoff spot. C KURT SUZUKI seemingly hits as many line outs as anyone in baseball. He has a solid bat for a catcher and qualifies as a middle-of-the-order option in Oakland. OF JOSH REDDICK is more of a line-drive hitter than a 25-HR guy, and he doesn't yet have the plate discipline to approach .300. 1B BRANDON ALLEN is an all-or-nothing hitter, but his potential for much-needed power should be enough for him to beat out DARIC BARTON. SS CLIFF PENNINGTON has quietly developed into a serviceable regular. With 3B SCOTT SIZEMORE out for the season with a torn ACL, either ERIC SOGARD or JOSH DONALDSON will win the job at third base. Neither player has reached 80 career at-bats yet. Highly-coveted Cuban OF YOENIS CESPEDES inked a four-year deal with Oakland, and will be expected to produced in the heart of the lineup immediately. OF COLLIN COWGILL is undersized, but has shown impressive power in the minors. The DH spot will fall to Allen when Barton is in the lineup. When he's not, it will be filled by such Quadruple-A types as KILA KA'AIHUE and CHRIS CARTER.
STARTING PITCHING: BRANDON McCARTHY reclamation project worked out nicely. He's an injury risk, but when healthy he's one of baseball's better middle-of-the-rotation arms. BARTOLO COLON pitched better than expected with the Yankees last year (7.4 K/9, 4.00 ERA), and should perform just as well in his new spacious ballpark. DALLAS BRADEN (shoulder) and BRETT ANDERSON (elbow) are both question marks after major surgeries. Braden's return date has been pushed back to early May, while Anderson will might not take the hill until June. The jewel of the Trevor Cahill trade, hard-throwing righty JARROD PARKER has a chance to make a big impact if his arm is recovered from 2009 Tommy John surgery. The Gio Gonzalez trade landed Oakland TOMMY MILONE and BRAD PEACOCK, both of whom are coming off impressive minor-league seasons. They'll compete for rotation spots this spring. TYSON ROSS could get a few starts, but he's gotten very hittable over the past year. They're in no hurry to start the arbitration clock of top prospect SONNY GRAY, but he should make some late-season starts.
RELIEF PITCHING: With Andrew Bailey gone, righty GRANT BALFOUR (2.47 ERA, 1.03 WHIP) will get the first chance to close games. Though his occasional bouts with command issues make him a risk. If Balfour falters, BRIAN FUENTES will get the next look because of his ninth-inning experience and strong second half of 2011 . . . Long a favorite inside the organization, injury-prone righty JOEY DEVINE has long been considered a future closer and should get some late-innings duties. The highest upside option for a future closer is 25-year-old righty FAUTINO DE LOS SANTOS. He has overpowering stuff but his command comes and goes. | | NY YANKEES: HITTING: Despite his decline from mediocrity into downright counter-productivity, SS DEREK JETER gets to hit atop the best lineup in baseball. Off an MVP-caliber season, OF CURTIS GRANDERSON is a true star. His average is mediocre, but his power is elite and the Yankees are letting him run when on base. After two years with a sub-.260 average, 1B MARK TEIXEIRA's talent seems to be fading. He still puts up huge power numbers playing in a bandbox. Coming off knee and thumb injuries, 3B ALEX RODRIGUEZ is a serious injury risk hitting in the middle of this lineup. 2B ROBINSON CANO will once again see as many RBI chances as anyone. He's been great in those situations the past two seasons. OFs NICK SWISHER and BRETT GARDNER offer power and SBs, respectively, though the Yankees may look to upgrade if they continue to post lackluster numbers. C RUSSELL MARTIN will get plenty of playing time now that Jesus Montero is in Seattle. Veteran slugger RAUL IBANEZ is the new DH in town, and will love hitting towards the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium.
STARTING PITCHING: CC SABATHIA struggled late last year and has logged a ridiculous number of innings over the past five years. He's a top-10 starter in the majors, but is starting to pass his prime. Newcomers HIROKI KURODA and MICHAEL PINEDA will both stabilize what was a shaky rotation last year. Kuroda, 37, posted a 3.07 ERA with the Dodgers and the 23-year-old Pineda has unlimited upside, fanning 173 batters in 171 innings with Seattle last season. IVAN NOVA benefitted from nearly nine runs of support per game. He keeps the ball down often enough to thrive in the Bronx, just without many strikeouts. PHIL HUGHES' stuff has regressed greatly since his days as a top prospect. He's trying to overcome conditioning problems this offseason. MANNY BANUELOS and DELLIN BETANCES are great prospects who may get a chance to start MLB games later this season.
RELIEF PITCHING: Trust MARIANO RIVERA to stay dominant until proven wrong. He was better in 2011 than he was in 2010 despite some velocity slippage. DAVID ROBERTSON has a firm hold on eighth-inning duties after an All-Star season. He's second in line for saves. RAFAEL SORIANO wasn't a total bust, as he did just fine after a rough April. He's settled into the seventh-inning role since Robertson is more trusted that he is. After Tommy John surgery, JOBA CHAMBERLAIN is aiming to be back this June. Middle reliever CORY WADE was reliable last year, and has a chance to rack up some vulture wins if he keeps going strong. |

After his winningest April, CC Sabathia will try to give another boost to the injury-plagued New York Yankees with a victorious start to May.
A matchup with the Oakland Athletics might help him do just that.
The left-hander will try to add to his recent success against the A's while helping the Yankees improve to 7-1 on their homestand Friday night.
Sabathia (4-2, 3.35 ERA) picked up a fourth win in April for the first time in his career after lasting eight innings against visiting Toronto on Saturday. He gave up four runs and a season-high nine hits - including the fifth and sixth homers he's allowed in the past three starts - but the Yankees (17-10) rallied for a 5-4 victory.
"The way he competes when he doesn't have his (best) stuff is probably as impressive as anything," manager Joe Girardi said. "That's how you become a 20-game winner."
Sabathia has pitched at least seven innings in each of his last five starts, aiding a team that's without Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson and Kevin Youkilis among nine players on the disabled list.
Despite an impressive record on this homestand, the Yankees are hardly blowing teams out. New York has outscored its opponents by just two runs - 32-30 - in the past seven games and has won nine of its last 11 by two runs or fewer.
The Yankees took advantage of Lyle Overbay's guile on the basepaths in Wednesday's 5-4 victory over Houston. Overbay made the Astros tag him at second on a double-play grounder in the sixth inning, allowing Eduardo Nunez to score the go-ahead run before the final out.
"We've played well so far," Ben Francisco said. "We've gotten great starting pitching. Our lineup has been doing the job, getting enough runs, and our bullpen has been unbelievable. That's a recipe for success."
Sabathia has possessed the right ingredients in his last 11 starts against Oakland (16-13), going 6-1 with a 2.47 ERA. He's 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in the past six and has posted a 1.16 ERA in his last three at home in the series.
In this start, Sabathia will face a team that's won three of four but also has lost five of six on the road. The Yankees have won 11 of 13 at home and are 16-6 overall since their 1-4 start.
A.J. Griffin (2-2, 4.65) will try to help his club snap out of its recent road funk by ending his own woes. The right-hander gave up a combined 13 runs over 11 innings in his last two starts after going 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his first three.
After allowing a career-high nine runs in Boston on April 22, Griffin's troubles against Baltimore on Saturday all came in the fourth inning. He gave up all four runs in that frame of a 7-3 loss, including two homers.
"(Griffin) pitched well pretty much every inning but one," manager Bob Melvin told the team's official website. "The big inning has been our Achilles' heel recently."
Griffin went 1-0 with a 5.23 ERA in two starts against New York last season. He gave up four runs over 4 1-3 innings in his only game at Yankee Stadium.
Ichiro Suzuki, 13 for 31 (.419) over his last eight games, is 1 for 3 against Griffin. Jed Lowrie is 5 for 15 against Sabathia while Yoenis Cespedes, Josh Donaldson and Brandon Moss are a combined 0 for 17.
