| |  | ARIZONA: HITTING: Arizona's offense placed ninth in the majors in runs (4.5 per game), homers (172) and OPS (.736), thanks in big part to its young outfield trio. OF JUSTIN UPTON, 24, had a career year and led his team with a .289 BA, 31 HR, 88 RBI, 105 runs and a .369 OBP. OF GERARDO PARRA may have won a Gold Glove, but OF JASON KUBEL is the new leftfielder. Kubel's power numbers will improve in the desert. OF CHRIS YOUNG's .236 BA was poor, but his .331 OBP allowed him to score 89 times and swipe a team-high 22 SB. 1B PAUL GOLDSCHMIDT, 24, belted 30 homers in 103 Double-A games and continued his power in the majors with eight bombs in 156 at-bats. 3B RYAN ROBERTS (19 HR, 86 runs) and C MIGUEL MONTERO (18 HR, 86 RBI) also had career-best seasons. 2B AARON HILL was a great midseason acquisition from Toronto, tallying an .878 OPS in 33 games with Arizona. SS STEPHEN DREW batted only .252 with 5 HR in half a season before fracturing his ankle. He'll probably return in early May, and speedy WILLIE BLOOMQUIST will replace him in the starting lineup.
STARTING PITCHING: D-backs starters won 71 games, sixth-most in baseball. IAN KENNEDY won 21 of those contests and led the team with a 2.88 ERA and 198 strikeouts. He also held batters to a .210 BA at hitter-friendly Chase Field. DANIEL HUDSON was strong in all facets as well, notching 16 wins, 169 K and a 3.49 ERA. He pitches like a seasoned veteran, but he's only 25. Newcomer TREVOR CAHILL was 6-1 with a 1.79 ERA in his first 10 starts before finishing 6-13 with a 5.25 ERA. Don't expect a huge comeback going from a pitcher's park to a hitter's park. The Diamondbacks brought back innings eater JOE SAUNDERS, which closed the door for stud prospect WADE MILEY to begin 2012 in Arizona's starting rotation. Once the first-round draft pick from 2008 cuts down on his walks, everything else should fall into place, and he should be pitching for the big club come September. JOSH COLLMENTER burst on the scene with his crazy delivery and was unhittable in his first six starts (1.05 ERA, 0.76 WHIP). He predictably tailed off, but still led the rotation with a 1.07 WHIP, walking just 28 batters in 154.1 innings.
RELIEF PITCHING: Arizona led the majors with 58 saves, as J.J. PUTZ tallied 45 of those. He didn't allow a run in his final 18 appearances, finishing with a 2.17 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 9.5 K per 9 IP. He was unhittable on the road, giving up just one run on nine hits in 24.1 innings (.113 opp. BA). Putz does have a history of being injured, and if he gets hurt again, DAVID HERNANDEZ proved a worthy replacement, saving 11 games last year and posting a strong 10.0 K per 9 IP rate. He held opponents to a meager .193 BA. BRAD ZIEGLER was even better after Arizona acquired him at the deadline. In 23 appearances with the D-backs, the side-arming Ziegler notched a 1.74 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. | | NY YANKEES: HITTING: Despite his decline from mediocrity into downright counter-productivity, SS DEREK JETER gets to hit atop the best lineup in baseball. Off an MVP-caliber season, OF CURTIS GRANDERSON is a true star. His average is mediocre, but his power is elite and the Yankees are letting him run when on base. After two years with a sub-.260 average, 1B MARK TEIXEIRA's talent seems to be fading. He still puts up huge power numbers playing in a bandbox. Coming off knee and thumb injuries, 3B ALEX RODRIGUEZ is a serious injury risk hitting in the middle of this lineup. 2B ROBINSON CANO will once again see as many RBI chances as anyone. He's been great in those situations the past two seasons. OFs NICK SWISHER and BRETT GARDNER offer power and SBs, respectively, though the Yankees may look to upgrade if they continue to post lackluster numbers. C RUSSELL MARTIN will get plenty of playing time now that Jesus Montero is in Seattle. Veteran slugger RAUL IBANEZ is the new DH in town, and will love hitting towards the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium.
STARTING PITCHING: CC SABATHIA struggled late last year and has logged a ridiculous number of innings over the past five years. He's a top-10 starter in the majors, but is starting to pass his prime. Newcomers HIROKI KURODA and MICHAEL PINEDA will both stabilize what was a shaky rotation last year. Kuroda, 37, posted a 3.07 ERA with the Dodgers and the 23-year-old Pineda has unlimited upside, fanning 173 batters in 171 innings with Seattle last season. IVAN NOVA benefitted from nearly nine runs of support per game. He keeps the ball down often enough to thrive in the Bronx, just without many strikeouts. PHIL HUGHES' stuff has regressed greatly since his days as a top prospect. He's trying to overcome conditioning problems this offseason. MANNY BANUELOS and DELLIN BETANCES are great prospects who may get a chance to start MLB games later this season.
RELIEF PITCHING: Trust MARIANO RIVERA to stay dominant until proven wrong. He was better in 2011 than he was in 2010 despite some velocity slippage. DAVID ROBERTSON has a firm hold on eighth-inning duties after an All-Star season. He's second in line for saves. RAFAEL SORIANO wasn't a total bust, as he did just fine after a rough April. He's settled into the seventh-inning role since Robertson is more trusted that he is. After Tommy John surgery, JOBA CHAMBERLAIN is aiming to be back this June. Middle reliever CORY WADE was reliable last year, and has a chance to rack up some vulture wins if he keeps going strong. |

Patrick Corbin was a late addition to the Arizona Diamondbacks' rotation, but so far he's been their best starter.
Phil Hughes has been the polar opposite for the New York Yankees.
Corbin looks to win his third straight start to begin the season Thursday night as he tries to help the visiting Diamondbacks salvage the finale of this three-game set with the surging Yankees.
Corbin (2-0, 1.50 ERA) was named to Arizona's rotation just two days before the season began after he went 3-0 with a 2.81 in seven spring training games.
The left-hander's spring performance has carried over into April as he owns the lowest ERA of any Arizona starter. He outpitched Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in his latest outing, allowing three hits and three walks over six innings Friday in a 3-0 victory.
"I think Patrick is a very competitive person, it's one of the reasons we liked him," manager Kirk Gibson told the team's official website. "We just thought he had the makeup to excel in these situations. I said (when) he came into spring training he didn't worry about anybody else, he had confidence in himself."
Now, the native of Clay, N.Y. - just outside Syracuse - will make his debut against the team he grew up rooting for, and the Diamondbacks (8-6) have dropped the first two games of this series after squandering multi-run leads. They wasted a three-run, seventh-inning cushion before falling 4-3 on Wednesday.
"I'm going to go out there and keep my composure and be myself, but I'll definitely be excited and have a lot of family and friends here to watch," Corbin said. "They feel weird coming here and wearing a Diamondbacks jersey or shirt. It's kind of funny."
New York (8-5), which has won seven of eight games, certainly isn't finding any humor in Hughes' performances.
Hughes (0-2, 10.29) owns the highest ERA of any Yankees starter, and is allowing opponents to hit .472 through two games since returning from a back injury.
Hughes surrendered five runs, nine hits - three homers - and two walks in three-plus innings of a 5-3 home defeat to Baltimore on Saturday, the team's most recent loss.
Manager Joe Girardi isn't planning to make any moves yet.
"I think it's really early to do that," Girardi told the team's official website. "Phil had a pretty good year for us; he's had a couple of pretty good years as a starter for us. No, I'm not really thinking of making any changes."
Hughes is facing Arizona for the first time, but he has a 6.17 ERA in four interleague home starts.
He's 3-1 in those games thanks to some offensive support, something the Yankees are providing plenty of lately. New York has averaged 6.4 runs over the past eight contests, hitting .309 with 14 homers over that stretch.
Travis Hafner connected for the latest blast Wednesday, when his pinch-hit homer in the eighth gave the Yankees the lead for good. He has a .364 average with three homers and six RBIs in his last seven games, and all three of his hits in this series have gone for extra bases.
"I'm having a lot of fun here," Hafner said. "I've been swinging the bat pretty well."
Brett Gardner is also providing some pop, going 9 for 24 with six RBIs in his last six games after collecting two hits and driving in two in the Yankees' three-run seventh inning Wednesday.
