| | | ST LOUIS: 2016: 86-76, second place
Manager: Mike Matheny (sixth season)
Who's new? OF Dexter Fowler, C Eric Fryer, LH Brett Cecil
Who's gone? 1B Brandon Moss, OF Matt Holliday, OF Jeremy Hazelbaker, RHP Jaime Garcia, RHP Seth Maness, RHP Jerome Williams
Projected lineup: CF Dexter Fowler (.276, 13 HR, 48 RBI, 13 SB with Cubs), SS Aledmys Diaz (.300, 17, 65), 1B Matt Carpenter (.271, 21, 68), RF Stephen Piscotty (.273, 22, 85), C Yadier Molina (.307, 8, 58), 3B Jedd Gyorko (.243, 30, 59), 2B Kolten Wong (.240, 5, 23), LF Randal Grichuk (.240, 24, 68)
Rotation: RH Carlos Martinez (16-9, 3.04 ERA), RH Adam Wainwright (13-9, 4.62), RH Mike Leake (9-12, 4.69), RH Michael Wacha (7-7, 5.09), RH Lance Lynn (did not pitch - Tommy John surgery)
Key relievers: RH Seung-hwan Oh (6-3, 1.92 ERA 19/23 SV), LH Kevin Siegrist (6-3, 2.77), RH Trevor Rosenthal (2-4, 4.46, 14/18 SV), LH Brett Cecil (1-7, 3.93 with Blue Jays), RH Jonathan Broxton (4-2, 4.30), RH Matt Bowman (2-5, 3.46), RH Miguel Socolovich (1-0, 2.00)
Hot spots: Rotation. The back end looked like a big leap of faith when spring training began. Wainwright and Wacha are coming off their worst seasons. Another 2013 World Series mainstay, Lynn, didn't pitch last season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. Then, on the first day of camp, 22-year-old right-hander Alex Reyes learned he needed Tommy John himself. That leaves a lot of question marks after ace Martinez ' more than any Cardinals staff has faced in years.
Outlook: This 40-man roster hints at a team in transition. Venerable 34-year-old catcher Molina is still St. Louis' biggest star. Reyes' injury hurts the youth movement, but the Cardinals are still stacked with talented 20-something sluggers ' Piscotty, Diaz, Gyorko and Grichuk ' who could emerge as household names. Adding Fowler's speed and patience should complement an already deep lineup. The pitching staff is a different matter. Barring a big resurgence from Wainwright, Lynn and Wacha (or a big trade) it's hard to see the Cardinals contending for more than a wild card spot in the Cubs' shadow. | | NY METS: 2016: 87-75, second place
Manager: Terry Collins (seventh season)
Who's new? No one of note
Who's gone? 1B James Loney, IF/OF Kelly Johnson, OF Alejandro De Aza, RHP Bartolo Colon, LHP Jonathon Niese
Projected lineup: CF Curtis Granderson (.237, 30 HR, 59 RBI), 3B David Wright (.226, 7, 14 in 37 games), LF Yoenis Cespedes (.280, 31, 86), RF Jay Bruce (.250, 33, 99 with Reds and Mets), 2B Neil Walker (.282, 23, 55), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (.280, 23, 62), 1B Lucas Duda (.229, 7, 23 in 47 games), C Travis d'Arnaud (.247, 4, 15)
Rotation: RH Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60 ERA), RH Jacob deGrom (7-8, 3.04), RH Matt Harvey (4-10, 4.86), LH Steven Matz (9-8, 3.40), RH Zack Wheeler or RH Robert Gsellman (4-2, 2.42) or RH Seth Lugo (5-2, 2.67)
Key relievers: RH Jeurys Familia (3-4, 2.55, 51/56 SV), RH Addison Reed (4-2, 1.97), RH Hansel Robles (6-4, 3.48), LH Jerry Blevins (4-2, 2.79), RH Fernando Salas (3-7, 3.91)
Hot spots: First base and third base. Duda missed 115 games last season because of a stress fracture in his lower back. When healthy, the veteran first baseman slugged a career-low .714. Former first-round draft pick Dominic Smith, 21, could be in position to battle for the starting spot soon. He'll likely begin the season at Triple-A. Franchise third baseman Wright doesn't have a hot prospect pushing him out the door, but how much game does he have left? The perennial All-Star only began throwing a baseball in February after an eight-month recovery from neck surgery. Wright had a degenerative back and has only played 75 games the last two years. Getting a full season from him at age 34 would be a shock.
Outlook: The Mets' championship window opened with a surprise World Series run in 2015, and their front office seems convinced it's still open. The club invested four years and $110 million to keep Yoenis Cespedes in the outfield. The Mets also exercised club options on Jay Bruce and Jose Reyes, and brought Neil Walker back on a qualifying offer. The result? Almost everyone returns from a club that lost a wild-card game to the Giants last October. The franchise is oozing young pitching ' Syndergaard might be the best right-hander on the planet ' but another World Series appearance might be too much to expect from a team that ranked 25th in runs per game last season. |
| | Mets, Cardinals clash in pivotal four-game set
NEW YORK -- The New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals are both trying to convince themselves they are still in the playoff race. By Thursday night, the task likely will have become much harder for at least one of the teams. The Mets and Cardinals will look to keep their flickering postseason hopes alive -- and extinguish the other's chances for good -- during a four-game series at Citi Field that begins Monday night. In the opener, New York's Zack Wheeler (3-6, 4.86 ERA) is scheduled to oppose St. Louis' Adam Wainwright (10-5, 5.20) in a matchup of right-handers. Both teams are coming off disheartening losses Sunday. The host Mets were routed by the Colorado Rockies 13-4, while the visiting Cardinals gave up two runs in the ninth inning to fall to the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3. The lopsided loss for the Mets (41-48) cost them a chance to sweep a three-game series from the Rockies and move within 7 1/2 games of Colorado, which leads the race for the second National League wild card. "It's just not the way you write it up," said New York left-hander Steven Matz, who took the loss after allowing seven runs in one-plus innings in the shortest start of his career. Afterward, the Mets took solace in winning the series, even though their big deficit in the wild-card race -- they are now 9 1/2 games behind the Rockies -- all but demands stringing together some sweeps. "It's all about getting series," New York outfielder Curtis Granderson said. "The big thing is to try to come in, no matter who the opponent happens to be (and) what's going on, and put ourselves in a situation to be able to be victorious. And that's what we were able to do over this first three games back during the second half. Obviously, it doesn't get any easier with St. Louis coming into town." The Cardinals (44-47) missed an opportunity to win the three-game series from the Pirates when Brett Cecil -- pitching the ninth inning in a save situation for the first time this season -- gave up two runs on three hits, including Adam Frazier's walk-off RBI single. "(Cecil) has been extremely good lately, and that's why we had him in that situation," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. "But those one-run ninths are hard anywhere." The defeat left the Cardinals 6 1/2 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central and 7 1/2 games behind the Rockies. "Not something I go looking for," Matheny said before Sunday's game, referring to the division and wild-card standings. "Same old, same old. Just play good baseball." Wheeler and Wainwright are opposing each other for the second straight start. Wainwright earned the win and Wheeler took the loss in the Cardinals' 4-1 victory at Busch Stadium on July 8. Wainwright allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings, while Wheeler gave up two runs over six innings. This will be Wheeler's second career start against the Cardinals. Wainwright is 4-5 with a 4.66 ERA in 12 career appearances (10 starts) against the Mets. |
