| |  | BOSTON: BOSTON (AP) - A revamped lineup and change in attitude has the Boston Red Sox looking to repeat a feat they performed just two seasons ago when they went from worst to World Series champions.
Like the hip-hop song they blasted in their locker room after the 2013 division and World Series titles were clinched in Fenway Park, the Red Sox started at the bottom.
They've carried the theme over this season.
''There's a good vibe going around,'' said first baseman Mike Napoli, who rallies spirits in the clubhouse by growing beards with teammates. ''It feels a little like 2013 in here. We're just having fun.''
During this past offseason, GM Ben Cherington looked to grow a weak offense that finished 11th in the AL in scoring.
Cherington spent $88 million to sign Hanley Ramirez, who began in the organization's minor league system before stints with Miami and Los Angeles, and signed third baseman Pablo Sandoval to a five-year, $95 million deal.
It was a quick fix for a lineup that lacked pop besides another strong season by Big Papi.
''This has a chance to be a lineup that doesn't give the opposition too many breathers or take a hitter off - so to speak,'' manager John Farrell said. ''There's the ability to do some damage up and down the lineup.''
The 39-year old Ortiz posted a .263 average with 35 homers and 104 RBIs last season, his eighth time in 12 reaching 30/100 with the club.
The revised order still leaves the question of how Red Sox starting pitching will hold up.
Cherington moved quickly after left-hander Jon Lester opted not to return, signing instead with the Cubs.
The GM acquired right-hander Rick Porcello from Detroit for slugger Yoenis Cespedes, traded for lefty Wade Miley and signed free agent Justin Masterson, who was coming off an injury-plagued season. The trio is expected to join Clay Buchholz and Joe Kelly.
Some have questioned whether they have a top-of-the-rotation type. Buchholz thinks they'll feed off the doubters and strive.
''I think we're going to fly under the radar for the most part, which I think is a good thing,'' he said. ''At some point they're going to say, `They've got their stuff in order and they've got a pretty good staff.'''
They aren't hiding from how bad last season ended after going 71-91 and finishing 25 games out in the AL East.
''Our record says what we were, and that wasn't good,'' Farrell said.

A FUN TRIO
Just a few days into spring training, Ortiz dubbed himself, Ramirez and Sandoval as ''The Three Amigos.'' The three are expected to bring both pop and some interesting times in the clubhouse.
''This will be a lively group and, I think, a fun one to be part of,'' Farrell said. ''I think the biggest thing is, they love to play the game. You can see the joy come out of them when they do well, and there's no question they'll draw from one another - the confidence they'll draw from one another.''

NO STICKER SHOCK HERE
The Red Sox pledged more than $180 million to bring in Ramirez and Sandoval.
''The proven power hitter obviously has a hefty price tag attached to it,'' Farrell said.
Ramirez hit 13 homers with 71 RBIs. Sandoval had 16 with 73 and won a World Series with San Francisco.

KEEP QUIET AND PLAY
Shane Victorino, who had his 2014 season cut short by back surgery, isn't about to try to analyze what went wrong last season. He feels like it's time to move on and make up for it.
''You try to be the best team you can be,'' he said. ''Don't want to sit here and talk about this and talk about that. You've got to go out there and do it. There's no other way of looking at it.''

KEEP AN EYE ON THIS
Ortiz didn't want to listen to any new rules about speeding up the game by having batters keep one foot in the box in between pitches. He even joked that he'll run out of money if he's fined.
''This game has been going on for over 100 years,'' he said. ''It's the nature of the game. I don't care who you are, you're not going to change. The pitch comes through, you come out of the box, you come back in.'' | | NY METS: NEW YORK (AP) - The big names for the New York Mets this season: Matt Harvey, David Wright, Tommy John.
Finally confident they're a playoff contender, the Mets absorbed a familiar setback in spring training - two of them, really. Zack Wheeler and Josh Edgin became the latest New York pitchers to have reconstructive elbow surgery, sidelining both until next year.
Wheeler's injury prevents the Mets from lining up three electric young arms at the top of their rotation. And the loss of Edgin, who had a 1.32 ERA last season, leaves the bullpen without a dependable lefty.
But the return of Harvey, an imposing ace back from his own Tommy John operation in 2013, has the team talking about October aspirations.
''We've been sitting around for four years asking everybody to be patient,'' manager Terry Collins said when camp opened. ''Well, it's time.''
Former batting champ Michael Cuddyer was signed to add offense, and his Virginia hometown buddy Wright looks healthy again at the plate. So while hardly anyone expects the Mets to unseat Washington atop the NL East, anything short of a wild-card push would be a disappointment.
That's a new outlook for a big-market club that has spent several years trimming payroll while rebuilding under general manager Sandy Alderson. New York improved by five wins last year and finished 79-83, its sixth consecutive losing season since moving into Citi Field.
''Is the team capable of winning 89-90 games? Yeah, I think the team is capable,'' Alderson said last month. ''It has that capacity. I think it has that potential.''
Harvey highlights a solid group of starters that includes 2014 NL Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom, who made a successful comeback in the minors from Tommy John surgery - the ligament-replacement procedure named for its pioneer pitching patient in 1974.
Dillon Gee, who was headed for the bullpen, instead slides back into the rotation as Wheeler's substitute. He rejoins Jonathon Niese and 41-year-old Bartolo Colon, a 15-game winner last season.
With young right-hander Rafael Montero also in the mix, plus top prospects Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz (a former Tommy John patient) getting close, the Mets might indeed have enough pitching depth to offset the injuries.
Especially if Tommy John veterans Jenrry Mejia and Bobby Parnell can lock down games in the late innings.
Mejia had his operation in 2011, shifted to a relief role last season and posted 28 saves. Parnell, the team's previous closer, had surgery last April and could be back this May.
New York is hardly the only team hurt by the recent rash of torn elbow ligaments all over baseball. Look no further than division rivals Washington, Miami and Atlanta.
But for a club that's been rebuilding around a young stable of power arms, rebuilding all those elbows has taken its toll on progress.
''Every guy that throws hard eventually is going to have it,'' Wheeler said.
The regular season begins April 6 in Washington. Here are some other story lines to watch for with the Mets this season:
POWER COMPANY: New York finished 12th in the National League in slugging percentage (.364) last year and 13th in batting average (.238). More is needed from Curtis Granderson, who hit .227 with 20 homers and 66 RBIs in his first season with the Mets after signing a $60 million, four-year contract. Kevin Long, a Granderson favorite during his Yankees days, was hired as hitting coach - and the Mets moved in the Citi Field fences for the second time to help Granderson, Wright and Lucas Duda in right-center. Wright, a seven-time All-Star, is eager to rebound after a left shoulder injury contributed to his 2014 bust. Duda will try to repeat his breakout season of 30 homers and 92 RBIs.
UP THE MIDDLE: Outside of Gold Glove center fielder Juan Lagares, the defense appears shaky. Wilmer Flores, a young hitter with a suspect glove, starts at shortstop - a gaping hole since Jose Reyes left following the 2011 season. All-Star second baseman Daniel Murphy is also limited defensively, so double-play chances could get dicey. Passed balls and wild throws are a concern for catcher Travis d'Arnaud.
UNDER PRESSURE: Increased expectations mean added scrutiny for Collins entering the final guaranteed season of his contract. Word is Alderson was even considering a change last year before deciding to bring Collins back. In truth, this is probably his first chance in five years to manage a Mets team talented enough to contend - but it might be his only one. |

Coming off the worst performance of his career, Jacob deGrom should be thrilled to be back home.
DeGrom looks to continue his dominance at Citi Field as the NL East-leading New York Mets try to end their longest home losing streak of the season Saturday against the Boston Red Sox.
DeGrom (12-6, 2.29) had gone 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his previous seven starts, but the right-hander was hammered for a career-high seven runs and three homers in 2 2-3 innings of Monday's 16-7 win at Philadelphia. He didn't get the decision.
"I don't think I located one pitch," deGrom told MLB's official website. "Everything was down the middle and they were hitting it hard."
That hasn't been the case for deGrom at home, where he's 6-2 with a 1.46 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 80 innings in 12 starts this season. He's gone 1-0 with a 0.87 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 20 2-3 innings in his last three outings at Citi Field.
The Mets (71-57), though, are on the brink of their first five-game slide in Queens since Aug. 3-14, 2014. They failed to win their eighth straight overall Friday, with Yoenis Cespedes flying out to center with the bases loaded in the 10th inning of a 6-4 loss to Boston (59-69).
New York is expected to have Daniel Murphy back in the lineup after he lined out to second as a pinch-hitter Friday. He's batting .352 with 20 RBIs over the last 21 games.
Manager Terry Collins said there was a "good shot" that David Wright will be the next to get a day off Saturday. The Mets captain had two hits Friday after being greeted with a standing ovation in his first home game since April 14.
Joe Kelly (7-6, 5.18) looks to become the first Red Sox pitcher to go 6-0 in August since Roger Clemens in 1990. The last Boston hurler to do it in any month was Pedro Martinez in May 1999.
The right-hander has posted a 3.03 ERA in his last five starts and a 1.40 mark in the past three.
Kelly's turnaround has been a major surprise after he was demoted to Triple-A Pawtucket in June. He credits the improvement to catcher Ryan Hanigan, who has started every game of Kelly's winning streak.
"Just the comfort level," Kelly said. "I typically can throw (the secondary stuff) for strikes. Getting on the same page as Hanigan, him making me throw those offspeed pitches ... It's a good mix.
"We have a good thing going right now. We're on the same page. It's fun to see him think back there. I'm throwing whatever he calls."
Kelly is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in three games - one start - against the Mets.
With Hanigan expected to be behind the plate, rookie Blake Swihart would head to the bench after hitting a solo inside-the-park homer in the 10th on Friday. He's batted .500 with eight RBIs in his last seven games.
Jackie Bradley Jr. had a two-run shot among his two hits, giving him six hits in 14 at-bats in the past five games.
