KEY GAME INFORMATION
ATLANTA: ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Braves usually start the season touted as playoff contenders.
Not this time.
For one of the few times in the last two-plus decades, not much is expected of a team that collapsed late last season, fired general manager Frank Wren and underwent a massive overhaul during the offseason.
The Braves dealt away sluggers Justin Upton, Jason Heyward and Evan Gattis, receiving only one player (starting pitcher Shelby Miller) who is likely to make a significant impact right away. Mostly, the team was focused on restocking a once-mighty farm system that fell on hard times during Wren's regime.
The message was clear: The Braves are rebuilding under new GM John Hart, with an eye toward the 2017 opening of the team's new suburban stadium.
''It's kind of on us to just put our heads down and work hard and try to win as many games as we can with the team we've got,'' third baseman Chris Johnson said. ''We can't look back. We can't look at who's gone.''
The Braves are likely to remain one of the most offensively challenged teams in baseball, but the pitching staff at least looks promising. The 24-year-old Miller had 25 wins for St. Louis over the last two season and joins a rotation that already includes two more 24-year-olds: All-Star Julio Teheran (14-13, 2.89) and left-hander Alex Wood (11-11, 2.78). If lefty Mike Minor, only 27, can bounce back from shoulder problems, the outlook is even brighter.
Atlanta also has perhaps the most dominant closer in the game, Craig Kimbrel, who led the NL in saves for the fourth year in a row with 47.
''I like our pitching,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said. ''Our rotation is going to be as good as you want.''
Even if the pitching comes through, the Braves have slipped way behind Washington in the NL East and could have trouble holding off the up-and-coming Miami Marlins as well.
Yep, times have changed in Atlanta.
Or maybe not.
''The goal is the same for me,'' Gonzalez insisted. ''Our goal is to make the playoffs.''
WHAT'S IN A NAME?: The center fielder formerly known as B.J. Upton is hoping a name change - actually, using his given name - will help him bounce back from two horrific seasons. The early results were not promising for Melvin Upton Jr., who missed all of spring training with a foot injury. Eric Young Jr. will hold down the starting job until Upton returns. Even then, Upton may have to share playing time unless he shows significant improvement. As it stands now, he's one of the greatest free-agent busts in baseball history. Since signing a $75-million, five-year contract with the Braves, his two-season totals are .198 with 21 homers, 51 RBIs and a staggering 324 strikeouts.
WHERE'S THE OFFENSE?: Even with Upton, Heyward and Gattis, the Braves scored the second-fewest runs in the majors. The offense was virtually non-existent coming down the stretch, the major reason Atlanta went 7-18 over the final month and wound up 17 games behind Washington after being tied for first at the All-Star break. The homer-or-bust philosophy clearly didn't work, so the Braves are hoping to scrap for runs this season. They'll have to with a lineup likely to include journeymen such as Young and Jonny Gomes, as well as rookie second baseman Jace Peterson. The only major offensive addition was right fielder Nick Markakis, and he's coming off neck surgery.
FREDI'S FUTURE: After firing Wren with a week to go in the disappointing 2014 season, the Braves decided to bring back Gonzalez for another year. He certainly deserved a shot to make up for a late-season collapse that was largely the result of a feeble offense. Let's not forget: During Gonzalez's first three years as manager, Atlanta won an NL East title, made two playoff appearances and missed out on another postseason berth on the final day. But his long-term future looks shaky, even with a franchise that cherishes stability. The Braves are definitely in rebuilding mode, and the manager often takes the fall when the losses begin to pile up.
NY METS: NEW YORK (AP) - The big names for the New York Mets this season: Matt Harvey, David Wright, Tommy John.
Finally confident they're a playoff contender, the Mets absorbed a familiar setback in spring training - two of them, really. Zack Wheeler and Josh Edgin became the latest New York pitchers to have reconstructive elbow surgery, sidelining both until next year.
Wheeler's injury prevents the Mets from lining up three electric young arms at the top of their rotation. And the loss of Edgin, who had a 1.32 ERA last season, leaves the bullpen without a dependable lefty.
But the return of Harvey, an imposing ace back from his own Tommy John operation in 2013, has the team talking about October aspirations.
''We've been sitting around for four years asking everybody to be patient,'' manager Terry Collins said when camp opened. ''Well, it's time.''
Former batting champ Michael Cuddyer was signed to add offense, and his Virginia hometown buddy Wright looks healthy again at the plate. So while hardly anyone expects the Mets to unseat Washington atop the NL East, anything short of a wild-card push would be a disappointment.
That's a new outlook for a big-market club that has spent several years trimming payroll while rebuilding under general manager Sandy Alderson. New York improved by five wins last year and finished 79-83, its sixth consecutive losing season since moving into Citi Field.
''Is the team capable of winning 89-90 games? Yeah, I think the team is capable,'' Alderson said last month. ''It has that capacity. I think it has that potential.''
Harvey highlights a solid group of starters that includes 2014 NL Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom, who made a successful comeback in the minors from Tommy John surgery - the ligament-replacement procedure named for its pioneer pitching patient in 1974.
Dillon Gee, who was headed for the bullpen, instead slides back into the rotation as Wheeler's substitute. He rejoins Jonathon Niese and 41-year-old Bartolo Colon, a 15-game winner last season.
With young right-hander Rafael Montero also in the mix, plus top prospects Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz (a former Tommy John patient) getting close, the Mets might indeed have enough pitching depth to offset the injuries.
Especially if Tommy John veterans Jenrry Mejia and Bobby Parnell can lock down games in the late innings.
Mejia had his operation in 2011, shifted to a relief role last season and posted 28 saves. Parnell, the team's previous closer, had surgery last April and could be back this May.
New York is hardly the only team hurt by the recent rash of torn elbow ligaments all over baseball. Look no further than division rivals Washington, Miami and Atlanta.
But for a club that's been rebuilding around a young stable of power arms, rebuilding all those elbows has taken its toll on progress.
''Every guy that throws hard eventually is going to have it,'' Wheeler said.
The regular season begins April 6 in Washington. Here are some other story lines to watch for with the Mets this season:
POWER COMPANY: New York finished 12th in the National League in slugging percentage (.364) last year and 13th in batting average (.238). More is needed from Curtis Granderson, who hit .227 with 20 homers and 66 RBIs in his first season with the Mets after signing a $60 million, four-year contract. Kevin Long, a Granderson favorite during his Yankees days, was hired as hitting coach - and the Mets moved in the Citi Field fences for the second time to help Granderson, Wright and Lucas Duda in right-center. Wright, a seven-time All-Star, is eager to rebound after a left shoulder injury contributed to his 2014 bust. Duda will try to repeat his breakout season of 30 homers and 92 RBIs.
UP THE MIDDLE: Outside of Gold Glove center fielder Juan Lagares, the defense appears shaky. Wilmer Flores, a young hitter with a suspect glove, starts at shortstop - a gaping hole since Jose Reyes left following the 2011 season. All-Star second baseman Daniel Murphy is also limited defensively, so double-play chances could get dicey. Passed balls and wild throws are a concern for catcher Travis d'Arnaud.
UNDER PRESSURE: Increased expectations mean added scrutiny for Collins entering the final guaranteed season of his contract. Word is Alderson was even considering a change last year before deciding to bring Collins back. In truth, this is probably his first chance in five years to manage a Mets team talented enough to contend - but it might be his only one.

*Braves-Mets Preview* =====================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Atlanta (8-4) at New York (10-3), 7:10 p.m. EDT

The New York Mets have matched the top 13-game start in franchise history, but it has come at a cost that's likely to catch up with them.

With a growing list of injuries, they will try to win 11 of their first 14 games for the first time since their famed 1986 season Tuesday night against the visiting Atlanta Braves and their thinning bullpen.

The surprising Mets (10-3) own the NL's best record, having won eight in a row since dropping their first two games in Atlanta in the second series of the season. They last won 10 of 13 to begin a season in 2006 and went on to a division title, as they did in 1986 before winning the World Series. That team started 13-3.

The winning streak is tied with two 2010 stretches for the club's longest since a 10-game run in July 2008, and the Mets have won their first seven home games for the first time in franchise history. But after Sunday's 7-6 home win over Miami, there wasn't any celebration.

New York lost catcher Travis d'Arnaud to a broken hand and reliever Jerry Blevins to a fractured arm. D'Arnaud was hitting .317 with an .892 OPS but will be out more than three weeks, and Blevins hadn't allowed a baserunner in five innings but is out for at least six weeks.

Catching prospect Kevin Plawecki and right-hander Hansel Robles will be called up from Triple-A Las Vegas.

"As we have done all year, we have to pick up the pieces and move forward," said manager Terry Collins, who is already without third baseman David Wright (hamstring), reliever Vic Black (shoulder) and closer Jenrry Mejia (suspension). Starting pitcher Zack Wheeler and reliever Josh Edgin are out for the season.

The Mets have scored 5.13 runs per game with a .363 on-base percentage on the streak. Newcomer Michael Cuddyer has led the way with a .440 average on a seven-game hitting streak.

The rotation has been good all season, going 9-2 with a 2.84 ERA, and Jonathon Niese (1-0, 1.59 ERA) will look to keep it going. He allowed three runs - one earned - and seven hits in five innings of a 5-3 loss in Atlanta on April 10, then beat Philadelphia in Wednesday's 6-1 win after surrendering a run and nine hits in 6 1-3 innings.

While the record and ERA might look good, his .364 opponent OBP does not. Still, he hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in his last six starts.

"He knows how to get outs when he needs them," Collins said.

Against Atlanta's current lineup, Jonny Gomes has caused the most trouble with a 6-for-10 mark with a home run.

Gomes drove in four runs in Sunday's 5-2 win in Toronto to lead the Braves (8-4) to a series win, while Nick Markakis continued his strong start with his new team, going 2 for 4 and upping his average to .375. They scored 18 runs in the three-game series and might need that kind of production to continue.

Trevor Cahill will be out to recover from a disastrous Atlanta debut. The right-hander made it through just 2 1-3 innings of last Tuesday's 8-2 home loss to Miami after allowing four runs and five hits with three walks.

Cahill, trying to prove himself after struggling greatly in Arizona a season ago, hadn't pitched since March 31.

"When a sinkerballer is giving up fly balls, maybe there's too much rest," manager Fredi Gonzalez told MLB's official website. "But it's just the first start of many."

At Citi Field, he's 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA in two appearances. Cuddyer is 4 for 22 against him, while Curtis Granderson is 1 for 13.

Should he again need significant help from the bullpen, Andrew McKirahan won't be around to help. The left-hander has been suspended for 80 games following a positive test for the banned substance Ipamorelin.

He's the second Atlanta reliever to be suspended this month after Arodys Vizcaino tested positive for Stanozolol. Shae Simmons is already out for the season after undergoing elbow surgery in February.

"You'd like to think you have an endless supply of pitching, but at some point, all of this cuts into your depth," Braves president of baseball operations John Hart said.
