| | | MIAMI: MIAMI (AP) - The owner of the World Series champion Boston Red Sox is apparently unimpressed by the Miami Marlins' attempts to improve their feeble offense.
''They should apologize for their regular season lineup,'' John Henry tweeted during spring training.
In 2013 the Marlins were truly sorry. They finished last in the majors in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs and home runs, and scored even less than their woeful 1993 expansion team. They also lost 100 games, two more than in their first season.
Henry was being catty after the Red Sox drew criticism for the minor league lineup they fielded for a spring game against Miami. But he might be right - it's unclear whether an offseason shakeup of the lineup will mean more runs for the Marlins than last year.
''We were anemic offensively,'' new general manager Dan Jennings said. ''Just bad. It's unacceptable.''
| | NY METS: NEW YORK (AP) - Five straight losing seasons. That's what the New York Mets have produced since moving into Citi Field.
David Wright, for one, is tired of it.
''We need to start going out there showing results,'' the star third baseman said. ''The last couple years we've kind of been hampered by some contracts and payroll issues. It seems like that's behind us. At the same time, we've got those prospects knocking at the door. I think we're in a better place now than we have been the past few years and quite frankly, I think we have a better team.''
Translation: No more waiting for next year. No more selling the future. No more excuses.
It's time to take a step forward - and that means winning.
General manager Sandy Alderson seems to think so, too. After he signed free agents Curtis Granderson, Bartolo Colon and Chris Young this offseason, a report emerged that Alderson told staffers he thinks the Mets can win 90 games (with a payroll under $90 million).
Even hard-core fans found that overly optimistic, especially with ace Matt Harvey expected to miss the entire season following Tommy John surgery. New York posted its second consecutive 74-88 record last year - and that was with Harvey on the mound most of the way.
But there is reason for hope, particularly in Triple-A. Touted young pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero could soon join a promising rotation that includes Colon, Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee and Jonathon Niese.
''He's got all the traits of the good ones,'' manager Terry Collins said about Syndergaard. ''He's on track to be special.''
The offense could be better with the addition of Granderson, who got a $60 million, four-year deal after an injury-plagued season for the Yankees across town. His left-handed power bat should provide some much-needed protection for Wright.
The multitalented Young, on a one-year contract following a down season in Oakland, appears highly motivated to regain his All-Star form.
''It's been interesting to watch the whole team,'' Granderson said early in spring training. ''There's power here. Chris Young has been amazing.''
The lineup remains flawed and prone to strikeouts, though the roster has improved. Perhaps not enough to push Washington and Atlanta in the NL East just yet, but the Mets expect to take significant strides this season as they anticipate Harvey's return in 2015.
''When I re-signed here, I knew it wasn't an overnight fix. I think I like that part of the challenge of it,'' Wright said. ''I want to be part of the reason why we get this thing turned around and headed in the right direction and ultimately start winning again. I think we have that ability.''

*Marlins-Mets Preview* ======================
By JOHN KOSIK STATS Editor
Miami (72-76) at New York (72-78), 7:10 p.m. EDT
Bartolo Colon didn't exactly showcase any veteran poise in his previous start, hitting two batters and getting ejected.
The New York Mets right-hander should be well aware that the Miami Marlins are currently a bit less tolerant than most clubs when it comes to being hit by a pitch.
Coming off a testy outing that was his shortest of the year, Colon will look to settle in when he takes the mound in the second of a three-game series against the Marlins.
The 41-year-old Colon (13-12, 4.14 ERA) allowed two-run homers to Adam LaRoche and Anthony Rendon and was tossed in the fourth inning after he'd plunked the following batter both times in a 6-2 loss to Washington on Thursday.
It was the fourth start this season in which Colon hit a batter - one happened in his only start against Miami on May 6 - but marked the first time he'd hit two in a single game since July 24, 2009, while with the White Sox.
"All I know is that he's got exceptional control," Nationals manager Matt Williams said after the game.
The ejection was the fourth of Colon's career and first since 2003.
"I think I didn't do anything wrong," he said through a translator. "I was surprised they threw me out of the game."
Anything similar would not sit well with the Marlins (73-76), who lost slugger Giancarlo Stanton - a leading NL MVP contender - when he was hit in the face by a fastball in Milwaukee that same night. Stanton suffered facial fractures and other injuries and is most likely done for the season.
Colon would prefer to display the type of control New York's rookie of the year candidate, Jacob deGrom, had in Monday's series opener. DeGrom stuck out the first eight batters he faced, tying the major league record set by Jim Deshaies of the Astros against the Dodgers on Sept. 23, 1986.
Deshaies and deGrom are the only pitchers to accomplish the feat since 1900.
The Mets (72-79), however, allowed the Marlins to score three runs in the eighth inning en route to a 6-5 victory, their second in a row since losing four straight.
"We got a couple soft hits but at the right time. Sometimes you need those," manager Mike Redmond said. "Had some great at-bats and that was a great team win."
Miami moved six games behind idle Pittsburgh for the second wild-card spot, while New York fell eight back. The Marlins have 13 games remaining and the Mets 11.
Outside of hitting Derek Dietrich in his May outing against the Marlins, Colon pitched well, turning in seven innings while allowing three runs. However, Henderson Alvarez tossed a six-hitter to lead Miami to a 3-0 victory.
That outing was Colon's first against the Marlins since 2002. In four starts against the club, he is 2-2 with a 4.15 ERA.
Opposing Colon this time out will be right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (6-11, 4.29), who has dropped five straight decisions over his last six starts.
His struggles actually date back a bit further. Since improving to 4-2 with a 3-2 win at Washington on May 26, he has gone 2-9 with a 4.84 ERA over 19 outings.
Eovaldi was the starter the night Stanton was hurt and allowed four runs and eight hits in four innings of a 4-2 loss to the Brewers.
