| | | MIAMI: MIAMI (AP) - The owner of the World Series champion Boston Red Sox is apparently unimpressed by the Miami Marlins' attempts to improve their feeble offense.
''They should apologize for their regular season lineup,'' John Henry tweeted during spring training.
In 2013 the Marlins were truly sorry. They finished last in the majors in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs and home runs, and scored even less than their woeful 1993 expansion team. They also lost 100 games, two more than in their first season.
Henry was being catty after the Red Sox drew criticism for the minor league lineup they fielded for a spring game against Miami. But he might be right - it's unclear whether an offseason shakeup of the lineup will mean more runs for the Marlins than last year.
''We were anemic offensively,'' new general manager Dan Jennings said. ''Just bad. It's unacceptable.''
| | NY METS: NEW YORK (AP) - Five straight losing seasons. That's what the New York Mets have produced since moving into Citi Field.
David Wright, for one, is tired of it.
''We need to start going out there showing results,'' the star third baseman said. ''The last couple years we've kind of been hampered by some contracts and payroll issues. It seems like that's behind us. At the same time, we've got those prospects knocking at the door. I think we're in a better place now than we have been the past few years and quite frankly, I think we have a better team.''
Translation: No more waiting for next year. No more selling the future. No more excuses.
It's time to take a step forward - and that means winning.
General manager Sandy Alderson seems to think so, too. After he signed free agents Curtis Granderson, Bartolo Colon and Chris Young this offseason, a report emerged that Alderson told staffers he thinks the Mets can win 90 games (with a payroll under $90 million).
Even hard-core fans found that overly optimistic, especially with ace Matt Harvey expected to miss the entire season following Tommy John surgery. New York posted its second consecutive 74-88 record last year - and that was with Harvey on the mound most of the way.
But there is reason for hope, particularly in Triple-A. Touted young pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero could soon join a promising rotation that includes Colon, Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee and Jonathon Niese.
''He's got all the traits of the good ones,'' manager Terry Collins said about Syndergaard. ''He's on track to be special.''
The offense could be better with the addition of Granderson, who got a $60 million, four-year deal after an injury-plagued season for the Yankees across town. His left-handed power bat should provide some much-needed protection for Wright.
The multitalented Young, on a one-year contract following a down season in Oakland, appears highly motivated to regain his All-Star form.
''It's been interesting to watch the whole team,'' Granderson said early in spring training. ''There's power here. Chris Young has been amazing.''
The lineup remains flawed and prone to strikeouts, though the roster has improved. Perhaps not enough to push Washington and Atlanta in the NL East just yet, but the Mets expect to take significant strides this season as they anticipate Harvey's return in 2015.
''When I re-signed here, I knew it wasn't an overnight fix. I think I like that part of the challenge of it,'' Wright said. ''I want to be part of the reason why we get this thing turned around and headed in the right direction and ultimately start winning again. I think we have that ability.''

*Marlins-Mets Preview* ======================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Miami (10-12) at New York (12-10), 7:10 p.m. EDT
A rare hit from Curtis Granderson kept the New York Mets rolling, and Jenrry Mejia is looking to keep it that way.
While Granderson hopes his game-winning hit will help him begin to snap out of his woeful funk at the plate, Mejia looks to continue the best stretch of his career on the mound Saturday night against the Miami Marlins.
Granderson has just seven RBIs on the season, but four have given New York (13-10) leads and two have delivered victories. Granderson started the Mets' current 5-1 stretch Sunday with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 14th to deliver a 4-3 win over Atlanta.
He came through again Friday, connecting for a walkoff single that scored Omar Quintanilla and completed a two-run ninth-inning rally in a 4-3 win over Miami.
"Anytime you get a chance to win and jump up and down with your teammates, it's a good thing," Granderson said.
Despite a few solid late-inning at-bats, Granderson is still hitting .141 in his first 22 games with the Mets.
"I'm not there yet, but I'm getting closer," Granderson said.
Mejia (3-0, 1.99 ERA) has certainly found a rhythm on the mound, as he owns the lowest ERA of any member of the rotation. The right-hander has tossed a career-best 13 2-3 consecutive scoreless innings.
He allowed four hits in 6 2-3 innings while collecting seven strikeouts in Monday's 2-0 win over St. Louis.
"He came to spring training bound and determined to be the fifth starter," manager Terry Collins told the team's official website. "There was a lot of talk this winter as to who it was going to be, and Jenrry put his mind to it. He got himself in great shape."
Mejia is 0-1 with a 4.22 ERA in six meetings with the Marlins (10-13), and he lost his only start against them 3-2 on July 31, giving up three runs in six innings.
The Marlins are hitting .179 with four runs during that slide in New York, and the offense isn't looking much better with a .193 average and 10 runs while dropping three of five.
Two of Garrett Jones' four hits over the past four games have been homers, but they've been solo shots in losing efforts. That includes one while going 2 for 4 in the opener of this series, improving to 10 for 25 with three homers and eight RBIs in seven games at Citi Field. However, he's 0 for 3 versus Mejia.
The Marlins will give Kevin Slowey (0-0, 4.15) a second turn in the rotation in place of the injured Jacob Turner (strained right shoulder).
Slowey, who made his first four appearances out of the bullpen, allowed two runs and three hits in five innings in a 3-2 win over Seattle on Sunday.
The right-hander tossed seven scoreless innings of relief while striking out eight in a 2-1, 20-inning win at New York on June 8.
Slowey, though, hasn't fared well versus Granderson, who is 6 for 16 with three doubles and a homer in their matchups.
