|
| | | KANSAS CITY: HITTING: With Melky Cabrera gone, OF LORENZO CAIN will get first crack at leadoff and centerfield. If he falters, speedster JASON BOURGEOIS, vet MITCH MAIER and prospect WIL MYERS are waiting. Former Brewer YUNIESKY BETANCOURT will start at 2B and has good life in his bat for a middle infielder. OF ALEX GORDON may not hit for average, but his approach and power are there. DH BILLY BUTLER is rock solid, but it's fair to wonder whether his power will ever progress. 1B ERIC HOSMER has MVP-type upside, and he's on the verge of figuring out MLB pitching. OF JEFF FRANCOEUR still chases too many bad pitches, but the organization likes him and he still has some pop and speed. 3B MIKE MOUSTAKAS is too good for the minors, but he still hasn't caught up to major-league pitching. There's a good chance he finds his groove this year. C HUMBERTO QUINTERO will be the main backstop with BRAYAN PENA backing him up. Speedy SS ALCIDES ESCOBAR's bat hasn't caught up to his glove. STARTING PITCHING: K.C. once again hopes this is the year LUKE HOCHEVAR puts it all together. His velocity picked up late last year, allowing him to be more than a groundball guy. Lefty BRUCE CHEN's late-career renaissance continues. He'll be a reliable veteran arm in the middle of K.C.'s rotation again. FELIPE PAULINO has the biggest upside in this rotation. He's always had one of MLB's best fastballs. His problem was that, when he missed (which has been often), it was usually belt-high and over the middle of the plate. If he hits his spots as he did late last year, he's got potential. But Paulino will start the season on the DL with a sore elbow. The Royals hope to solve JONATHAN SANCHEZ's command issues. The lefty is a risk, but has legitimate No. 3 potential. Top prospect DANNY DUFFY will get every chance to pitch his way into the Opening Day rotation. RELIEF PITCHING: JOAKIM SORIA is out for the season with Tommy John surgery, leaving GREG HOLLAND to pick up closer duties. Holland was the Royals' best bullpen arm in 2011 and his stuff has always been nearly unhittable. It's just a matter of whether last year's vastly improved walk rate was for real. JONATHAN BROXTON was a disaster last season, but he'll be given every chance to become the No. 2 guy in this bullpen because of his experience in Los Angeles. AARON CROW was a first-round pick (twice) for his college career as a starter, but wore down late last year, and walked too many batters. | | NY METS: HITTING: The Mets will be moving in the fences at Citi Field by as much as 12 feet and reducing the height to eight feet, making the park more homer-friendly. The loss of Jose Reyes and his NL-leading average at the top of the order weakens an already subpar lineup. 3B DAVID WRIGHT is coming off his worst season (.254 BA, 14 HR, 61 RBI) and could be traded at the July 31 deadline. New OF ANDRES TORRES provides very little at the plate (.221 BA, .312 OBP), but the future is bright for youngsters OF LUCAS DUDA (.852 OPS) and 1B IKE DAVIS (.926 OPS), who missed most of 2011 with an ankle injury. OF JASON BAY (.245 BA) continues to be a colossal bust. SS RUBEN TEJADA will be tasked with trying to replace Reyes. The 22-year-old made great strides last year, batting .319 after August 1. DANIEL MURPHY hit .320 last year, and will start at second, possibly losing AB in a platoon with JUSTIN TURNER. C JOSH THOLE hits well enough to be an above-average starting catcher. STARTING PITCHING: With the fences moving forward at Citi Field, the entire Mets pitching staff takes a hit. JOHAN SANTANA will be ready for Opening Day, but it's hard to have much faith that he'll remain healthy for an entire season. His velocity on his fastball is not what it used to be, topping out in the high-80's. MIKE PELFREY benefitted most from the pitcher-friendly ballpark with serviceable home numbers (3.94 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) and atrocious road statistics (5.49 ERA, 1.56 WHIP). JONATHON NIESE was also much better at Citi Field (3.54 ERA) than he was on the road (5.33 ERA), but he posted 14 games of 6+ strikeouts for the second straight season. DILLON GEE began the season 7-0 with a 2.86 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, but closed the 2011 campaign with a 5.51 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in his final 17 starts. Knuckle-balling R.A. DICKEY posted a second straight solid season with New York, notching a 3.28 ERA and a solid 1.23 WHIP. At age 37, he hopes to keep his pitches dancing in the smaller home ballpark. RELIEF PITCHING: Two former Blue Jays late-innings relievers, FRANK FRANCISCO and JON RAUCH, were signed from Toronto to pitch at the back of the bullpen. Francisco will likely get first crack at the ninth-inning role, saving 17 games last year and keeping his strikeout rate above one per inning for the fourth straight year. Rauch is an imposing figure at 6-foot-11, but he posted a 1.35 WHIP and paltry 6.2 strikeout rate last year. But 52 saves since 2008 makes him a worthy candidate for ninth-inning duty. RAMON RAMIREZ was part of the Andres Torres/Angel Pagan trade and he should be a valuable set-up man. He had a strong two-year stint with San Francisco, posting a 2.07 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. |

*Royals-Mets Preview* =====================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Kansas City (54-51) at New York (48-58), 1:10 p.m. EDT
Following the end of the Kansas City Royals' longest winning streak in more than 10 years, the pitcher who started the run has a chance to begin a new one.
Bruce Chen takes the mound at Citi Field as the Royals try for their 10th win in 11 games Saturday against a New York Mets team that could be without its All-Star third baseman.
The Mets (49-58) snapped Kansas City's nine-game winning streak - its first since starting the 2003 campaign 9-0 - Friday when Eric Young Jr. homered with two outs in the 11th inning for a 4-2 victory.
"It never feels good after you lose a game, but yeah, it was a nice streak," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "Now let's see if we can start another one."
New York's David Wright went 2 for 5 with a two-run homer, but was forced out of the game in the 10th inning when he strained his right hamstring while beating out an infield hit. Wright, who leads the team with a .309 average, is expected to have an MRI on Saturday.
An extended absence might spell trouble for a New York lineup that has averaged 2.4 runs while hitting .147 (10 for 68) with runners in scoring position during a 3-5 stretch.
"It's going to be tough for us," Young said. "(Wright) brings so much to our lineup. That's why he is our captain."
It could get tough pretty quick as the Mets go up against Chen (4-0, 2.09 ERA), who is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in three starts for the Royals (54-52) since replacing Luis Mendoza in the rotation.
Chen got the team's winning streak started by yielding one run and three hits over six innings in a 3-2 victory over Baltimore on July 23. He followed that by giving up two runs and three hits over six innings in a 4-2, 12-inning win at the White Sox on Sunday.
Opponents are hitting .115 in Chen's three starts, but he hasn't had much help from a Kansas City offense that has provided him with five runs of support.
Marlon Byrd (3 for 6) and John Buck (2 for 2) are the only New York players with experience in this matchup. Chen, who played for the Mets in 2001-02, hasn't pitched against them since 2003.
The Mets originally planned on starting Carlos Torres before the right-hander worked two innings of scoreless relief to earn the win in the opener. Now they'll give the ball to Jeremy Hefner (4-8, 4.21), who is 0-2 with a 12.34 ERA in three starts since the All-Star break.
The right-hander allowed a career-high five walks and five runs - three earned - over 5 1-3 innings before the Mets rallied late for a 6-5 win at Miami on Monday.
David Aardsma couldn't hold a ninth-inning lead on Friday and New York's banged-up bullpen could again be without closer Bobby Parnell (stiff neck), while setup man Josh Edgin is out at least four weeks because of a stress fracture in one of his ribs.
