| | | ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss. A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery. Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool. Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth. ''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.'' Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training. ''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''
| | MINNESOTA: MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The number is staggering. In the past three years, the Minnesota Twins have lost 291 games. Ninety-nine in 2011. Ninety-six each of the last two seasons.
A team that was once viewed as a model for succeeding and competing with modest financial resources has been an afterthought for too long now. They have finished last in the AL Central twice and were fourth last season.
So the Twins shed their frugal ways in the offseason, shelling out $73 million to bring in Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes to bolster a lagging rotation. They also brought back manager Ron Gardenhire on a two-year deal and moved Joe Mauer from catcher to first base in an effort to protect their franchise player from injury.
''They made a statement: `We don't want to see this again. We don't want to go through this again this summer,''' Gardenhire said.
The Twins said goodbye to longtime first baseman Justin Morneau late last season when general manager Terry Ryan traded him to the Pirates in a stretch-run deal. There weren't many other changes to an offense that has struggled to score runs, but the upgrades to the rotation have given the holdovers some peace of mind that they won't have to score seven runs a game to have a chance to win.
''It's night and day to be honest with you. Terry went out and spent some money on some good arms in Nolasco and Hughes,'' second baseman Brian Dozier said. ''Hughes had a bad year last year but is an All-Star pitcher and I think moving to this park will help him a lot. I think just getting out of New York to be honest with you. ... So we needed to address our pitching staff and Terry did that, and I'm happy about it.''

*Diamondbacks-Twins Preview* ============================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Arizona (62-93) at Minnesota (66-88), 8:10 p.m. EDT
Barring something unforeseen, the Minnesota Twins and Arizona Diamondbacks will finish at the bottom of their respective divisions.
The Diamondbacks also have a chance at finishing with a pair of ugly skids.
With a resurgent Ricky Nolasco on the mound, Minnesota will try to send Arizona to its season high-tying seventh loss in a row and 11th straight away from home in Monday's opener of a three-game series.
The Twins (66-89) dropped five games behind fourth-place Chicago in the AL Central with a 7-2 loss to Cleveland on Sunday and the White Sox's 10-5 victory in Tampa Bay. Minnesota has come in last in two of the past three seasons.
Arizona (62-94) fell three games behind Colorado in the NL West after a four-game sweep in Denver. With an 8-3 loss Sunday, the Diamondbacks have been outscored 41-16 in their six consecutive losses, including a 35-13 margin during their stay at Coors Field.
"I don't really have an explanation. We tried to throw everything at them," manager Kirk Gibson said. "They swung the bats really well, scored a lot of runs. And we weren't swinging the bats very well, so (we we're) unable to shut them down."
The Diamondbacks dropped seven in a row Sept. 5-12 for their longest losing streak in four seasons and ended that with three straight wins before starting their current skid. Arizona's 10-game road losing streak is its longest since a franchise-worst 14-gamer in 2010.
Nolasco (5-11, 5.34 ERA) will try to send the Diamondbacks to their 19th defeat in 21 road games while continuing his strong finish.
The right-hander has a 1.35 ERA in three starts this month, and had one of his best outings of the season Tuesday against Detroit. Nolasco tossed eight scoreless innings, but closer Glen Perkins blew his seventh save before Minnesota rallied for a 4-3 win.
"This was one of his best (starts)," catcher Kurt Suzuki told MLB's official website.
Nolasco has received just 11 runs of support during an eight-game winless stretch that began July 6, two days before he was placed on the disabled list due to a strained right elbow.
Nolasco went 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA in four starts against the Diamondbacks in 2013 with Miami and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Josh Collmenter (10-8, 3.60) has a 4.95 ERA on the road, but he's been good wherever he's pitched lately despite getting little help. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 1.01 ERA in his last five starts after holding San Francisco to two runs over eight innings Tuesday in a 2-1 loss.
Collmenter has never faced Minnesota. The two Twins hitters to have faced Collmenter - Kurt Suzuki and Jordan Schafer - are a combined 0 for 7.
Didi Gregorious is 7 for 14 lifetime against Nolasco and went 5 for 11 with two doubles last season.
The Diamondbacks swept their most recent series with the Twins at home in 2011, but were swept when they last visited Minneapolis in 2008.
