| | | CLEVELAND: CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis didn't want it to end. He had plenty of company.
After the final out ended the club's magical, turnaround season so jarringly last October, Kipnis, who made his first All-Star team in 2013 and a few of his teammates lingered in the dugout and watched as Tampa Bay's players celebrated their 4-0 win in the AL wild-card playoff game.
One and done. Hardly the finish Cleveland wanted.
And once again, the city would remain without a major sports championship, a drought approaching its 50-year anniversary.
But despite their brief postseason appearance in manager Terry Francona's first year, the Indians intend to play in October again - and again.
''We don't want it to be a fluke,'' Kipnis said. ''We don't want to be a one-trick pony. We want to be at the top and we want to stay there.''
Hoping to build off their unexpected 92-win campaign, the Indians enter 2014 confident they can not only contend this season, but go even further.
During spring training in Arizona, first baseman Nick Swisher, who also serves as the club's high-energy hype man, handed out ''Unfinished Business'' T-shirts to his teammates.
The Indians aren't satisfied.
''Last season, hopefully, was a steppingstone that we needed to get us going in the right direction,'' Swisher said. ''Last year was that amazing year to get us in the right mind frame to say, `Hey, we can do this. We are a team. And people need to start recognizing it.'''
Cleveland had to win its final 10 games just to make the playoffs. The late-season kick wouldn't have been necessary if the Indians had played more consistently, and more evenness has been a focus for Francona, who feels his club has the makings to do something special again.
''I love our team,'' said the AL's manager of the year. ''I love coming to the ballpark and watching them play. They are easy to like because they try hard. When you can show up with a group of guys and you respect the way they go about things it makes the challenging times more fulfilling. We know we can do it now. We've got to try and go do it better.''
| | MINNESOTA: MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The number is staggering. In the past three years, the Minnesota Twins have lost 291 games. Ninety-nine in 2011. Ninety-six each of the last two seasons.
A team that was once viewed as a model for succeeding and competing with modest financial resources has been an afterthought for too long now. They have finished last in the AL Central twice and were fourth last season.
So the Twins shed their frugal ways in the offseason, shelling out $73 million to bring in Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes to bolster a lagging rotation. They also brought back manager Ron Gardenhire on a two-year deal and moved Joe Mauer from catcher to first base in an effort to protect their franchise player from injury.
''They made a statement: `We don't want to see this again. We don't want to go through this again this summer,''' Gardenhire said.
The Twins said goodbye to longtime first baseman Justin Morneau late last season when general manager Terry Ryan traded him to the Pirates in a stretch-run deal. There weren't many other changes to an offense that has struggled to score runs, but the upgrades to the rotation have given the holdovers some peace of mind that they won't have to score seven runs a game to have a chance to win.
''It's night and day to be honest with you. Terry went out and spent some money on some good arms in Nolasco and Hughes,'' second baseman Brian Dozier said. ''Hughes had a bad year last year but is an All-Star pitcher and I think moving to this park will help him a lot. I think just getting out of New York to be honest with you. ... So we needed to address our pitching staff and Terry did that, and I'm happy about it.''

*Indians-Twins Preview* =======================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Cleveland (79-74) at Minnesota (66-87), 2:10 p.m. EDT
Corey Kluber's breakout season could end with the AL Cy Young, though he's more concerned with improving the Cleveland Indians' dim playoff chances.
With a vital series looming, Kluber will try to help the Indians to their fifth win in six games Sunday against the Minnesota Twins.
Kluber (16-9, 2.54 ERA) ranks among the AL's leaders in wins, ERA, WHIP (1.11) and strikeouts per nine innings (10.0). The right-hander's 244 strikeouts are the most for the Indians (80-74) since Sam McDowell had 304 in 1970.
With two starts remaining, Kluber has a serious chance to join Cliff Lee (2008), CC Sabathia (2007) and Gaylord Perry (1972) as Cleveland's only Cy Young winners.
Kluber has certainly looked like he belongs in that group, winning three straight starts behind a 1.11 ERA and 0.90 WHIP while fanning 29 over 24 1-3 innings. That stretch includes allowing two runs in 8 1-3 innings of an 8-2 win over Minnesota on Sept. 11.
He followed that by collecting a career-high 14 strikeouts while yielding one run and scattering seven hits in seven innings of a 4-2 win at Houston on Tuesday. It was the most strikeouts in a game for Cleveland since Bartolo Colon had 14 on May 29, 1998.
"He worked ahead," manager Terry Francona said. "He usually starts the game out establishing his fastball command. I think he had to work into it. ... But his stuff is just so late moving and going both directions. Pitching in and opening up away, there's a reason he had those strikeouts."
Despite emerging as Cleveland's ace, Kluber is more focused on helping the club cut into its 3 1/2-game gap behind Kansas City, which holds the second wild-card spot.
The Indians host the Royals for a three-game set beginning Monday, but they'll first have to complete a suspended game from Aug. 31. Cleveland was leading 4-2 in the 10th inning before rain forced the postponement in Kansas City.
"Until we're mathematically eliminated, we have a chance," Kluber told MLB's official website.
Those chances improved slightly with a 7-3 win over the Twins (66-88) on Saturday in which Yan Gomes homered among his three hits while getting four RBIs.
The catcher is 7 for 18 (.389) with two homers and eight RBIs in four games, and he's a .400 hitter in 14 career contests at Minnesota.
Michael Brantley had two hits and is batting .432 during an 11-game hitting streak, becoming the first Indians player to have at least four streaks of that length in a season since Toby Harrah had that many in 1982.
The Twins are turning to Anthony Swarzak (3-1, 4.42) in the finale of this three-game set, and he's looking to show some improvement in his second straight start in place of the injured Tommy Milone (shoulder and neck).
The right-hander, who has started just twice over 96 appearances in two years, was hammered for six runs and 11 hits before being pulled with one out in the fifth and not getting a decision in Monday's 8-6 loss to Detroit.
Swarzak's only other start this season was a 3-1 home win over the Indians on July 23, and he yielded one run and two hits in five innings. He's come on in relief against them on four other occasions, surrendering five runs and 10 hits in 4 2-3 innings while winning his only decision.
