| | | CLEVELAND: CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis didn't want it to end. He had plenty of company.
After the final out ended the club's magical, turnaround season so jarringly last October, Kipnis, who made his first All-Star team in 2013 and a few of his teammates lingered in the dugout and watched as Tampa Bay's players celebrated their 4-0 win in the AL wild-card playoff game.
One and done. Hardly the finish Cleveland wanted.
And once again, the city would remain without a major sports championship, a drought approaching its 50-year anniversary.
But despite their brief postseason appearance in manager Terry Francona's first year, the Indians intend to play in October again - and again.
''We don't want it to be a fluke,'' Kipnis said. ''We don't want to be a one-trick pony. We want to be at the top and we want to stay there.''
Hoping to build off their unexpected 92-win campaign, the Indians enter 2014 confident they can not only contend this season, but go even further.
During spring training in Arizona, first baseman Nick Swisher, who also serves as the club's high-energy hype man, handed out ''Unfinished Business'' T-shirts to his teammates.
The Indians aren't satisfied.
''Last season, hopefully, was a steppingstone that we needed to get us going in the right direction,'' Swisher said. ''Last year was that amazing year to get us in the right mind frame to say, `Hey, we can do this. We are a team. And people need to start recognizing it.'''
Cleveland had to win its final 10 games just to make the playoffs. The late-season kick wouldn't have been necessary if the Indians had played more consistently, and more evenness has been a focus for Francona, who feels his club has the makings to do something special again.
''I love our team,'' said the AL's manager of the year. ''I love coming to the ballpark and watching them play. They are easy to like because they try hard. When you can show up with a group of guys and you respect the way they go about things it makes the challenging times more fulfilling. We know we can do it now. We've got to try and go do it better.''
| | MINNESOTA: MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The number is staggering. In the past three years, the Minnesota Twins have lost 291 games. Ninety-nine in 2011. Ninety-six each of the last two seasons.
A team that was once viewed as a model for succeeding and competing with modest financial resources has been an afterthought for too long now. They have finished last in the AL Central twice and were fourth last season.
So the Twins shed their frugal ways in the offseason, shelling out $73 million to bring in Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes to bolster a lagging rotation. They also brought back manager Ron Gardenhire on a two-year deal and moved Joe Mauer from catcher to first base in an effort to protect their franchise player from injury.
''They made a statement: `We don't want to see this again. We don't want to go through this again this summer,''' Gardenhire said.
The Twins said goodbye to longtime first baseman Justin Morneau late last season when general manager Terry Ryan traded him to the Pirates in a stretch-run deal. There weren't many other changes to an offense that has struggled to score runs, but the upgrades to the rotation have given the holdovers some peace of mind that they won't have to score seven runs a game to have a chance to win.
''It's night and day to be honest with you. Terry went out and spent some money on some good arms in Nolasco and Hughes,'' second baseman Brian Dozier said. ''Hughes had a bad year last year but is an All-Star pitcher and I think moving to this park will help him a lot. I think just getting out of New York to be honest with you. ... So we needed to address our pitching staff and Terry did that, and I'm happy about it.''

*Indians-Twins Preview* =======================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Cleveland (63-61) at Minnesota (55-69), 1:10 p.m. EDT
While Phil Hughes has pitched very well for the Minnesota Twins of late, Cleveland's Corey Kluber has been even better.
Looking to win a seventh straight decision Thursday, Kluber can help the Indians to a road series sweep by preventing Hughes from improving to 4-0 in as many starts this month.
Among the major league leaders in ERA, Kluber (13-6, 2.41 ERA) is 6-0 with a 1.31 ERA in his last eight starts and has allowed four earned runs, struck out 55 and held opponents to a .161 average over 47 2-3 innings while going 4-0 in the last six. The right-hander gave up a run, five hits and fanned 10 for the second straight start over 7 2-3 innings of a 2-1, 11-inning victory over Baltimore on Friday.
"I think it's just kind of getting on a roll and continuing to do what I've been doing the previous starts," Kluber told MLB's official website. "I'm not trying to go out there and do too much or change anything. I'm just kind of trying to stay the course."
He's 2-1 with a 4.82 ERA in seven starts against the Twins (55-70) and prevailed in his last one - a 12-6 win at Minnesota on Sept. 27 despite yielding six runs and 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings.
Hughes (13-8, 3.76) is 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA in five starts against the Indians (64-61), whom he has not faced since 2012.
Minnesota has dropped four in a row since Hughes gave up a run in 7 1-3 innings of a 4-1 victory over Kansas City on Saturday. The right-hander has allowed one run in each outing while winning his three starts this month, and totaled 22 strikeouts with two walks over 20 1-3 innings during that span.
"I feel pretty good right now," he said. "I've been in a pretty good stretch."
Hughes will try to cool off the Indians, who have won seven of nine following a four-game skid.
Mike Aviles homered for one his three hits and had two RBIs, and five Cleveland pitchers combined on a six-hitter during Wednesday's 5-0 victory.
Aviles is batting .250 on the season but .444 in his last eight versus Minnesota. He's 3 for his last 9 against Hughes.
The Twins starter won't face Nick Swisher, who underwent season-ending arthroscopic surgery on both knees Wednesday. Swisher, who last played Aug. 9, hit .208 with eight home runs, 42 RBIs and struck out 111 times in 97 games during a disappointing second season with the Indians.
"It's definitely unfortunate," Aviles said. "Everyone knows the energy he brings and what he brings to the table.
Minnesota's Joe Mauer and Trevor Plouffe are a combined 11 for 27 with three homers against Kluber. Though Mauer is batting .344 in nine games since missing more than a month with an oblique strain, Plouffe is 3 for 24 in his last six contests.
With a stolen base Wednesday, Brian Dozier became the sixth player in Twins history to record 20 steals and 20 homers in a season. However, he's 3 for 28 in his last eight contests.
