| | | CLEVELAND: CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis didn't want it to end. He had plenty of company.
After the final out ended the club's magical, turnaround season so jarringly last October, Kipnis, who made his first All-Star team in 2013 and a few of his teammates lingered in the dugout and watched as Tampa Bay's players celebrated their 4-0 win in the AL wild-card playoff game.
One and done. Hardly the finish Cleveland wanted.
And once again, the city would remain without a major sports championship, a drought approaching its 50-year anniversary.
But despite their brief postseason appearance in manager Terry Francona's first year, the Indians intend to play in October again - and again.
''We don't want it to be a fluke,'' Kipnis said. ''We don't want to be a one-trick pony. We want to be at the top and we want to stay there.''
Hoping to build off their unexpected 92-win campaign, the Indians enter 2014 confident they can not only contend this season, but go even further.
During spring training in Arizona, first baseman Nick Swisher, who also serves as the club's high-energy hype man, handed out ''Unfinished Business'' T-shirts to his teammates.
The Indians aren't satisfied.
''Last season, hopefully, was a steppingstone that we needed to get us going in the right direction,'' Swisher said. ''Last year was that amazing year to get us in the right mind frame to say, `Hey, we can do this. We are a team. And people need to start recognizing it.'''
Cleveland had to win its final 10 games just to make the playoffs. The late-season kick wouldn't have been necessary if the Indians had played more consistently, and more evenness has been a focus for Francona, who feels his club has the makings to do something special again.
''I love our team,'' said the AL's manager of the year. ''I love coming to the ballpark and watching them play. They are easy to like because they try hard. When you can show up with a group of guys and you respect the way they go about things it makes the challenging times more fulfilling. We know we can do it now. We've got to try and go do it better.''
| | MINNESOTA: MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The number is staggering. In the past three years, the Minnesota Twins have lost 291 games. Ninety-nine in 2011. Ninety-six each of the last two seasons.
A team that was once viewed as a model for succeeding and competing with modest financial resources has been an afterthought for too long now. They have finished last in the AL Central twice and were fourth last season.
So the Twins shed their frugal ways in the offseason, shelling out $73 million to bring in Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes to bolster a lagging rotation. They also brought back manager Ron Gardenhire on a two-year deal and moved Joe Mauer from catcher to first base in an effort to protect their franchise player from injury.
''They made a statement: `We don't want to see this again. We don't want to go through this again this summer,''' Gardenhire said.
The Twins said goodbye to longtime first baseman Justin Morneau late last season when general manager Terry Ryan traded him to the Pirates in a stretch-run deal. There weren't many other changes to an offense that has struggled to score runs, but the upgrades to the rotation have given the holdovers some peace of mind that they won't have to score seven runs a game to have a chance to win.
''It's night and day to be honest with you. Terry went out and spent some money on some good arms in Nolasco and Hughes,'' second baseman Brian Dozier said. ''Hughes had a bad year last year but is an All-Star pitcher and I think moving to this park will help him a lot. I think just getting out of New York to be honest with you. ... So we needed to address our pitching staff and Terry did that, and I'm happy about it.''

*Indians-Twins Preview* =======================
Cleveland (62-61) at Minnesota (55-68), 8:10 p.m. EDT
Ricky Nolasco's return to the mound last week didn't give the Minnesota Twins any more confidence in what he can do.
The same can be said about his first two outings against the Cleveland Indians as he served up homers to Yan Gomes in both.
Gomes was the hitting star in the opener of this three-game set and will try to add to Nolasco's misery Wednesday night at Target Field.
Nolasco (5-8, 5.99 ERA) signed a four-year, $49 million contract in the offseason, the richest free agent deal in Twins' history. It hasn't paid off since his ERA is the highest of his career and he missed over a month with a right elbow strain before returning Friday.
The right-hander's first appearance since July 6 was hardly inspiring, as he was charged with five runs over six innings and suffered a 6-5 loss to Kansas City.
"I don't think it's about building confidence up with a guy like him, it's about results and we need to get results out of him," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We need to see him get going stronger and more consistent, and giving us a chance."
Nolasco never faced the Indians (63-61) until this year, posting a 7.20 ERA without a decision in two starts. He'll need to come up with a better game plan against Gomes, who homered twice in four at-bats in those games.
Gomes had just three hits in 17 at-bats before going 3 for 4 with a solo homer and three runs scored in Tuesday's 7-5 victory. The Indians have won six of eight as they try to get back into the AL wild-card race.
Minnesota (55-69) blew a five-run lead after one inning in its third straight loss and ninth in 13 games.
Oswaldo Arcia homered in his third consecutive game with a three-run shot that capped the five-run first inning. The Twins managed four hits the rest of the game.
"Can't shut down on a team like that. You can see what they're playing for," Gardenhire said.
The Indians also got a boost from rookie Tyler Holt, who was called up before the game and drove in his first two runs in his fourth stint in the big leagues.
Cleveland will start another rookie on Wednesday in T.J. House (1-3, 4.13), who is 0-3 with a 4.74 ERA in seven road starts. He has not pitched since yielding four runs - three earned - in six-plus innings in a 4-0 loss at Cincinnati on Aug. 7.
That outing extended his run of seven straight in which he has not allowed more than three earned runs. This will mark the left-hander's second outing against the Twins after giving up three runs in five innings in a 4-3 loss July 21, though he didn't get a decision.
Twins star Joe Mauer was injured at that time and will get his first look at House. He's hitting .239 against left-handers this year after batting .301 against them over the previous two seasons.
