| | | CHI WHITE SOX: CHICAGO (AP) - From rock bottom last season to contention this year? The Chicago White Sox see no reason why it can't happen.
They're ready to put last season's 99-loss wreck behind them and make a jump at least back to respectability, if not a run at the AL Central title.
They see a team with solid pitching, a new slugger in Jose Abreu and renewed vigor. Now, all they have to do is back it up.
''You have to pitch, you have to hit, you have to score,'' said manager Robin Ventura, entering his third season. ''You have to play defense. You have to do all of them in our division. Detroit has won it the last few years. They have a combination of everything. Unless you do that, you're not going to be close. We proved that last year.''
They had the pitching part down last season. The rest? Well, that's where things got dicey.
| | MINNESOTA: MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The number is staggering. In the past three years, the Minnesota Twins have lost 291 games. Ninety-nine in 2011. Ninety-six each of the last two seasons.
A team that was once viewed as a model for succeeding and competing with modest financial resources has been an afterthought for too long now. They have finished last in the AL Central twice and were fourth last season.
So the Twins shed their frugal ways in the offseason, shelling out $73 million to bring in Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes to bolster a lagging rotation. They also brought back manager Ron Gardenhire on a two-year deal and moved Joe Mauer from catcher to first base in an effort to protect their franchise player from injury.
''They made a statement: `We don't want to see this again. We don't want to go through this again this summer,''' Gardenhire said.
The Twins said goodbye to longtime first baseman Justin Morneau late last season when general manager Terry Ryan traded him to the Pirates in a stretch-run deal. There weren't many other changes to an offense that has struggled to score runs, but the upgrades to the rotation have given the holdovers some peace of mind that they won't have to score seven runs a game to have a chance to win.
''It's night and day to be honest with you. Terry went out and spent some money on some good arms in Nolasco and Hughes,'' second baseman Brian Dozier said. ''Hughes had a bad year last year but is an All-Star pitcher and I think moving to this park will help him a lot. I think just getting out of New York to be honest with you. ... So we needed to address our pitching staff and Terry did that, and I'm happy about it.''

*White Sox-Twins Preview* =========================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Chicago (48-54) at Minnesota (46-54), 8:10 p.m. EDT
John Danks has never pitched in a major league uniform other than one for the Chicago White Sox. This may be the last time he does.
With reports swirling that he could be headed out of Chicago, Danks attempts to bounce back from his shortest outing of the season Friday night against the Minnesota Twins.
With the White Sox (49-54) two games ahead of Minnesota for last in the AL Central and 9 1/2 games out of first, Danks (8-6, 4.35 ERA) seems to be a likely candidate to be traded ahead of next Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline.
"Yeah, nothing changes. It is what it is," Danks told MLB's official website. "It's part of it. Something happens, we'll deal with it then."
The left-hander has spent all eight of his seasons with Chicago, going 69-80 with a 4.22 ERA in 201 starts. However, he hasn't had more than eight wins in a season since getting a career-high 15 in 2010.
If the White Sox are trying to deal him, he certainly didn't do them any favors Sunday. He was hammered for seven runs and a season-high 12 hits - two homers - in 4 1-3 innings while not getting a decision in an 11-7 loss to Houston.
Danks was 2-0 with a 2.73 ERA in his previous four outings.
He's had no such success when facing Minnesota lately, going 0-6 with a 6.18 ERA in his last eight starts against them. That includes an 0-3 record and 8.22 ERA in four games at Target Field, allowing six runs and 10 hits with four walks in five innings of a 6-5 loss there June 22.
While Danks has struggled in Minneapolis, Adam Eaton is 8 for 22 with three extra-base hits and three RBIs in five games there. The center fielder collected three hits and two RBIs in Thursday's 5-2 win in the series opener, giving him a .457 average in his last nine games overall.
Jose Abreu is also on a tear with a .362 average during a 14-game hitting streak, the longest active in the majors. He had a team season-high 18-game streak June 15-July 4.
Like Danks, Kevin Correia (5-12, 4.76) may also be headed elsewhere in a trade, but he's more concerned with rebounding from his shortest outing since May. The right-hander was pulled after four innings Sunday, giving up four runs and seven hits with three walks while tossing 91 pitches in a 5-3 defeat to Tampa Bay.
It was the fourth loss in five starts for Correia, but he has a 2.87 ERA over his last eight. One of his good performances in that span came June 21 when he beat Chicago, allowing two runs - one earned - in six innings of a 4-3 victory.
Correia is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA in his last five starts against the White Sox.
The Twins (46-55) got a scare Thursday when top starter Phil Hughes suffered a right shin contusion on a comebacker off the bat of Adam Dunn in the fourth inning. They're hopeful he'll make his next start.
Minnesota is 2-4 thus far on a 10-game homestand and has dropped nine of 12 at Target Field.
"We just have to keep plugging away," Hughes said. "There's no alternative."
