| | | BOSTON: BOSTON (AP) - Last season was one to remember for fans of the Red Sox - and one to forget for the players.
Soon after Boston's third World Series championship in 10 years, that bearded bunch decided to put it behind them and focus on what they must do to keep winning.
''It was a dream come true last year,'' pitcher Jake Peavy said. ''It's a new year. I think that's been a slogan of ours on the text messages that we've been exchanging with the guys, `Hey turn the page, it's a new year, it's 2014.' We haven't done anything and, obviously, some teams in our division got awfully better.''
The Red Sox won't be sneaking up on them, not after rebounding from a 69-93, last-place finish in the AL East to a 97-65 record, a 28-win improvement.
''You've got the bull's-eye on your back,'' second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. ''You want to get everybody's best, so I think it's going to be a fun challenge for everybody.''
John Farrell's disciplined, businesslike approach worked in his first year as Boston's manager. That, and the influx of players to improve the toxic clubhouse chemistry, made the one season under the animated Bobby Valentine seem like a distant memory.
Those players, including Jonny Gomes, Mike Napoli and Shane Victorino, return. The Red Sox lost center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury to the New York Yankees then signed Grady Sizemore as a possible replacement. Sizemore missed the last two seasons with knee and back injuries that required surgery but has had a healthy, productive spring training.
''In this group, no one's going to let anybody sit back and relax,'' Pedroia said. ''We're always going to push each other and make sure that we're respecting the game and playing the game the right way. If we do that, we should be all right.''
| | MINNESOTA: MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The number is staggering. In the past three years, the Minnesota Twins have lost 291 games. Ninety-nine in 2011. Ninety-six each of the last two seasons.
A team that was once viewed as a model for succeeding and competing with modest financial resources has been an afterthought for too long now. They have finished last in the AL Central twice and were fourth last season.
So the Twins shed their frugal ways in the offseason, shelling out $73 million to bring in Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes to bolster a lagging rotation. They also brought back manager Ron Gardenhire on a two-year deal and moved Joe Mauer from catcher to first base in an effort to protect their franchise player from injury.
''They made a statement: `We don't want to see this again. We don't want to go through this again this summer,''' Gardenhire said.
The Twins said goodbye to longtime first baseman Justin Morneau late last season when general manager Terry Ryan traded him to the Pirates in a stretch-run deal. There weren't many other changes to an offense that has struggled to score runs, but the upgrades to the rotation have given the holdovers some peace of mind that they won't have to score seven runs a game to have a chance to win.
''It's night and day to be honest with you. Terry went out and spent some money on some good arms in Nolasco and Hughes,'' second baseman Brian Dozier said. ''Hughes had a bad year last year but is an All-Star pitcher and I think moving to this park will help him a lot. I think just getting out of New York to be honest with you. ... So we needed to address our pitching staff and Terry did that, and I'm happy about it.''

*Red Sox-Twins Preview* =======================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Boston (19-19) at Minnesota (18-19), 1:10 p.m. EDT
David Ortiz is clearly enjoying another series at Target Field and will try to lead the Boston Red Sox to another win there by continuing his power surge.
Ortiz will also look to prevent Phil Hughes from winning a career high-tying fifth consecutive start Thursday when the right-hander faces his former division rivals for the first time since signing with the Minnesota Twins.
Ortiz hit a pair of home runs for the second straight game Wednesday while leading the Red Sox (20-19) to a 9-4 victory, their seventh in the last eight road matchups with the Twins (18-20).
"He's one of our best hitters. We depend on him and he's locked in right now and it's a good feeling when he's up to bat," first baseman Mike Napoli said.
The Boston slugger is batting .528 with nine homers and 22 RBIs in 13 games at the Twins' home park, which opened in 2010. He's 7 for 10 in this series and is batting .552 with five homers in his last seven games overall.
"It looks like he's got the ball on a tee," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "You can't misfire like that. That's what we're doing, misfiring. We said we were going to pitch him tough. We haven't pitched him tough."
Hughes (4-1, 3.92 ERA) will try to slow Ortiz down while winning five consecutive starts for the first time since May 28-June 19, 2010. Ortiz is 9 for 22 (.409) with two homers and three doubles in his career against the former New York Yankee, but has one single in his last five at-bats in the matchup.
Hughes has a 2.05 ERA in his last four games, issuing one walk in 26 1-3 innings. He scattered eight hits in seven innings and walked none while outdueling Detroit ace Justin Verlander in a 2-1 victory Friday.
Hughes went 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in his first three starts for the Twins (18-20) before launching his current win streak.
He had a three-game winning streak against Boston snapped in his only start versus the Red Sox last season. He gave up five runs over 4 1-3 innings of an 11-1 loss June 1 and had a miserable relief appearance against them Sept. 6, getting charged with four runs while recording one out in a 12-8 defeat.
Hughes will be opposed by Clay Buchholz (2-3, 6.44), who seeks a fourth consecutive win over Minnesota.
The right-hander has posted a 3.05 ERA in his last six starts against the Twins. He gave up two runs and four hits over seven innings in the most recent matchup, a 3-2 win at Target Field on May 17.
Buchholz, though, heads into this start after struggling in an 8-0 road loss to Texas on Friday. He allowed six runs and 10 hits over 4 1-3 innings after posting a 2.70 ERA in back-to-back wins.
Joe Mauer, batting .344 in his last 16 games against Boston, is 5 for 13 with three doubles in his career versus Buchholz. Kurt Suzuki is 6 for 12.
Napoli is 5 for 9 with two home runs against Hughes and Mike Carp is 5 for 10.
