| |  | BALTIMORE: HITTING: The leadoff spot is 2B BRIAN ROBERTS' if he can stay on the field. His recent injury history is very troubling, though his talent makes him a risk worth taking. 2B ROBERT ANDINO and 2B RYAN ADAMS would compete for time if Roberts is out. The O's best hitter last year was arguably SS J.J. HARDY. He was healthy for the first time in years and flexed his legit 30-HR power. If Roberts and Hardy stay healthy, OF NICK MARKAKIS will likely hit third and see an increase in RBI chances. OF ADAM JONES seems to have the highest ceiling of any Baltimore hitter. 3B MARK REYNOLDS will probably end up at 1B. His horrendous average cancels out some of his 40-HR potential. OF NOLAN REIMOLD revived his MLB career with an impressive end of the season. He's got a shot to start in left. 1B CHRIS DAVIS is a candidate to start at first, third or DH as sort of a Junior Mark Reynolds. C MATT WIETERS is already one of the best two-way backstops in baseball at age 25.
STARTING PITCHING: WEI-YIN CHEN pitched well enough in Japan (2.48 ERA, 1.06 WHIP in past four seasons) to become the de-facto ace of this horrible pitching staff. JAKE ARRIETA is a mediocre talent, but is good enough to secure a spot as a Baltimore starter. JASON HAMMEL hopes the switch from Coors Field will help lower his career ERA of 4.99. The highest-risk, highest-potential O's pitcher may be BRIAN MATUSZ. His 2011 line is frightening (10.69 ERA, 2.11 WHIP), but he has the raw skills and pitch repertoire to turn it around. TOMMY HUNTER came over from Texas midseason and should round out the rotation.
RELIEF PITCHING: There was talk of JIM JOHNSON being converted into a starter, but he'll open the season as the team's closer. Johnson established himself as the O's best option to close after going 7-for-7 in that role last September. KEVIN GREGG would step in as the ninth-inning man if Johnson falters. He was unstable in that role last year. Gregg is a trade candidate this midseason, in which case he'd probably end up a set-up man elsewhere. Flame-throwing MATT LINDSTROM is a darkhorse for saves. He saved 23 games for Houston in 2010 before being used as a set-up man in Colorado last year. TSUYOSHI WADA brings his finesse game from Japan. He's a heady hurler who hides the ball well, but he's in for a rude awakening in the A.L. East. BRAD BERGESEN and CHRIS JAKUBAUSKAS are long relievers who may get bumped into the rotation if the young Baltimore SPs struggle again. | | MINNESOTA: HITTING: OF BEN REVERE's slap-and-run style fits well in spacious Target Field. He will compete with lefty Chris Parmelee for the starting RF job. OF DENARD SPAN should be over his concussion problems. He works the count well as a steady presence near the top of the order. C JOE MAUER will see more time at first in an attempt to keep him healthy. Offensively, he'll be limited by a pitcher-friendly home park and no support in the lineup. RYAN DOUMIT has a chance to play regularly and stay healthy as a full-time DH and/or backing up Mauer behind the dish. 1B JUSTIN MORNEAU's concussion symptoms came back late last year. It's a bad omen. OF JOSH WILLINGHAM is being relied on to produce runs, but he's going from one pitcher-friendly home park (Oakland) to another. 3B DANNY VALENCIA showed enough power in 2011 to secure an everyday job heading into 2012. Newly signed SS JAMEY CARROLL has done a nice job off the bench, but hasn't been tested in an everyday role. If hamstring problems are still holding him back, 2B ALEXI CASILLA has won the second-base job ahead of disappointing import TSUYOSHI NISHIOKA, who will start the year in the minors.
STARTING PITCHING: Who would have thought CARL PAVANO would emerge as the picture of consistency and durability? While he's far from a star, the veteran continues to be a rock for Minnesota, throwing strikes and eating innings. SCOTT BAKER got hurt again last year. If he could ever stay healthy, he's the prototype for success at Target Field'lots of strikeouts, few walks, lots of flyouts. The FRANCISCO LIRIANO rollercoaster nosedived again last year. The Twins have gotten so desperate to keep him healthy that they actually let him pitch more over the offseason. He's obviously a huge risk again. BRIAN DUENSING, NICK BLACKBURN and JASON MARQUIS are all the definition of fifth starter. They serve it up, give up a lot of hard-hit balls, and hope they get hit right at their defenders. If Duensing and Blackburn falter, ANTHONY SWARZAK probably pitched well enough last year to get a shot in the rotation. LIAM HENDRICKS, one of the organization's better prospects, would be a slightly more exciting option.
RELIEF PITCHING: Despite his underwhelming performance last year, MATT CAPPS will pitch the ninth inning again because of his 'closer's experience.' He figures to be on an undeservedly long leash. GLEN PERKINS certainly proved he deserves to close. He was Minnesota's best reliever in his first full season in the 'pen. His velocity was up as a short reliever, and the lefty was truly overpowering. If things go sour for the Twins again this season (and it seems likely they will), perhaps they'll get serious about Perkins later this year. |

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter has had to shuffle his starting rotation on a regular basis over the past two seasons, but that hasn't stopped his club from being successful.
Steve Johnson becomes the latest to make a start for Baltimore as he faces the host Minnesota Twins on Saturday night.
The Orioles made the playoffs in 2012 using 12 different starting pitchers, only three of whom made at least 20 starts for the team. Johnson went 3-0 with a 2.86 ERA in four starts and had a 2.11 ERA in 12 appearances overall as a rookie last season.
He's pitched exclusively in the minors in 2013, though, after a right lat injury in training camp ended his chances of winning the fifth spot in the rotation. Johnson is 1-1 with a 4.41 ERA in three outings for Triple-A Norfolk.
He'll be the ninth pitcher to make a start for Baltimore this season - tying the Los Angeles Dodgers for most in the majors - after Miguel Gonzalez (thumb blister) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday.
"(Johnson) looks good," Showalter told the team's official website. "I thought some of the inactivity he had, he had kind of gotten away from some things because he had to physically. He worked hard to get in good pitching shape."
The Orioles (22-14), with a 3.94 team ERA, haven't seemed to mind the multiple changes to the rotation. They've won five of six after overcoming a six-run deficit to beat Minnesota 9-6 in 10 innings Friday.
"Even though (Baltimore is) the youngest team in our division, they stay within each other and do what they do," Showalter said.
The Orioles finished with a season-best 18 hits, including three each from Manny Machado, Adam Jones and Chris Davis. Machado, who broke the tie with an RBI single in the 10th, is hitting .422 over his last 10 road games.
Nick Markakis went 2 for 4 with a sacrifice fly and is hitting .529 during an eight-game hitting streak versus Minnesota.
"That's a heck of a baseball team over there, and they can run some hitters up there," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "They can ambush you. They got some big, clutch hits. That's kind of what they're known for."
Markakis went 3 for 3 with a double April 6 off Saturday's scheduled starter, Vance Worley. The right-hander's winless streak reached 12 starts after he left in the sixth inning and the bullpen couldn't hold a two-run lead in Minnesota's 6-5, 11-inning loss at Boston on Monday.
Worley (0-4, 6.95 ERA) is 0-7 with a 6.87 ERA since beating Washington on Aug. 1 while pitching for Philadelphia.
"I'm pretty happy with the outing, but it would've been nice to get a W," Worley said after allowing three runs and not walking a batter for the first time in 2013.
The right-hander blew a two-run lead in the fifth inning when he faced Baltimore last month, allowing five runs overall and 10 hits through five frames before Minnesota pulled out a 6-5 win.
The Twins (16-16) appeared to be headed to a fourth consecutive win Friday before squandering their lead. Joe Mauer went 3 for 5 with a pair of RBIs and is hitting .395 during a nine-game hitting streak.
Minnesota has lost seven of the last nine home meetings with Baltimore.
